These folks have been around a lot longer than the wierded out USA folks, so over all that time they've had the chance to get more mental screwed.
I don't think self inflicting or "suffering" in the name of god is really all that strange. It is all a matter of degrees and what one person thinks is sane is another persons insanity.
BTW didn't watch the flick but skimmed over the article. I saw a report like this on Discovery or something a few years back.

They're hardly alone in the practice. Hell, Opus Dei (the real organization, not the sinister fictional invention by Brown) are big time into self-flagellation as a means for getting closer to God, and whip themselves bloody on a regular basis.
So, while it's certainly a disturbing practice, don't for a minute pretend that Islam has a lock on the practice. It's quite widespread in Christianity as well, albeit not as much as it used to be back a few hundred years ago.
