POWER: GORE MANSION USES 20X AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD; CONSUMPTION INCREASE AFTER 'TRUTH'
Mon Feb 26 2007 17:16:14 ET

The Tennessee Center for Policy Research, an independent, nonprofit and nonpartisan research organization committed to achieving a freer, more prosperous Tennessee through free market policy solutions, issued a press release late Monday:

Last night, Al Gore’s global-warming documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, collected an Oscar for best documentary feature, but the Tennessee Center for Policy Research has found that Gore deserves a gold statue for hypocrisy.

Gore’s mansion, [20-room, eight-bathroom] located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).

In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.

The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average.

Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh—guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore’s average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.

Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore’s energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.

Gore’s extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.

“As the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk to walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use,” said Tennessee Center for Policy Research President Drew Johnson.

In total, Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.

I dont want to sound like im giving him free pass but what is all the power in his home being used on? How much of it is security related? I agree if hes going to go on a global crusade you should lead by example, but his life is a lot different than yours or mine. To do his presentations he has to fly ( hannity) and im sure his house is loaded with security related electorincs. Other than that what are you looking for the libs on the board to say lyion ? What do you think hes sitting there with every tv light and applience in the house on, 13 space heaters , laughing to himself on how hes swindled the american people ?

Oh no! A rich person with a large house uses more power than the average citizen! What shocking news! The next thing you'll tell us is that Jeff Gordon uses more gasoline than the average citizen! Santa Maria!

How much does his power consumption compare to other major political and societal figures? Does he use more or less? How about compared to how much power was consumed by the Reagan Estate in Santa Barbara? How about compared to Bill Gates' estate?

Please. Gore is going to have significantly higher attendant resource usage if for no other reason than the Secret Service detachment he has around him (and is indeed, pretty much required to have.) Take away their usage, and how does his use turn out?

I wonder how much electricity The White House uses in any given month? because bear in mind, that is George W. Bush's direct responsibility.

Everyone knows it is not Al's fault. If his fucking negro slaves wouldn't leave every light in the house on, it may not be a problem.

I think it's the proportion of how much energy that is more so than the simple fact he just has a larger building.

Using more energy in one month than a single house in a year is pretty ridiculous regardless of its size.

I would agree, but then again, I do not know what exactly he does at home in regards to work, having A/V equipment, how many people are there on a given day, etc.

If the article stated that it was simply Al & Tipper wandering around the home by themselves using up all the electricity, then I would see how this article was more than a pathetic cry for attention.

*nod* Given the circumstances, it would be nice to see what exactly is being done to warrant all that energy.

My house has 5 computers. That in itself is massive amounts of electricity. There are also 8 people living here.

And as I mentioned, the Gore family, as ex-VP, has a constant Secret Service presence around them. So, who knows how many people that is at the house, and what kind of sophisticated security system they have running. I can only imagine that such systems use a ton of power, especially for the monitoring rooms, with the big banks of CRTs hooked up to cameras, etc.

More objected criticism from Lyion I see.

I'd like to see how much more he consumes than the average [20 room 8 bathroom] mansion.

Plus the movie doesn't deal with electricity consumption but a whole host of other things.

Hey, another good non troll factual post from Tikker that isn't a personal attack or obvious dipshit 3rd grade form of sarcasm.

Oh, wait, he can't actually discuss anything more than Mindia, just do the same shit and then reference his boy in an Ironic fashion. You guys should go bowling together, since neither of you are capable of having an adult conversation. Heck, at least Mindia tries. Tikker is worse than him lately. Same exact BS.

Anyways...

Group questions level of energy use at Gore home
High electric billing records show 'green power' also was purchased

By ANNE PAINE
Staff Writer

A day after a film about his efforts to combat global warming won an Oscar, former Vice President Al Gore was called a hypocrite by a Tennessee group that said his Belle Meade home is consuming too much energy.

The home's average monthly electric bill last year was just under $1,200, according to bills that The Tennessean acquired from Nashville Electric Service.

"As the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk (the) walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use," said Drew Johnson, president of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, identified as a free-market think tank.

Gore's power bill shows, however, that the former vice president may be doing just that.

Gore purchased 108 blocks of "green power" for each of the past three months, according to a summary of the bills.

That's a total of $432 a month Gore paid extra for solar or other renewable energy sources.

The green power Gore purchased in those three months is equivalent to recycling 2.48 million aluminum cans or 286,092 pounds of newspaper, according to comparison figures on NES' Web site.

NES joined the TVA program in 2000 to give power customers a way to support environmentally sound sources of electricity. The Tennessean could not determine when Gore signed up for green power.

NES gets its electricity from TVA. Most is produced from coal, which emits carbon, a greenhouse gas. A lesser amount comes from nuclear power and a small amount from hydroelectric.

An Inconvenient Truth, the movie about Gore's global warming battle, details how greenhouse gases are trapping heat next to the earth, causing a changing climate with melting ice caps and more violent storms.

"Every family has a different carbon footprint," said Kalee Krider, a spokeswoman for Gore. The Gores' 10,000-square-foot house on Lynnwood Boulevard has a large one.

The Green Power Switch program isn't all that Gore and his wife, Tipper, are doing, Krider said.

They use compact fluorescent light bulbs and are in the midst of a renovation project that includes having solar panels installed on their home to reduce fossil fuel consumption, she said.

Their car? A Lexis hybrid SUV.

"They, of course, also do the carbon emissions offset," she said.

That means figuring out how much carbon is emitted from home power use, and vehicle and plane travel, then paying for projects that will offset that with use of renewable energy, such as solar power.

Gore helped found Generation Investment Management, through which he and others pay for offsets. The firm invests the money in solar, wind and other projects that reduce energy consumption around the globe, she said.

Johnson, whose group usually focuses on government spending issues, said he "doesn't differ much from Al Gore on his environmental concerns."

"We went into this just asking the question, 'Is the leader of the environmental movement basically living up to his word?' Given that he's a Tennessean, I thought it's a question we should ask."

What they found is someone whose home uses as much power in a month as an average family would use in a year, he said.

In addition to the electric bill, the natural gas bill for Gore's home and guesthouse ran $1,080 per month last year, Johnson said.

"For someone in his position not to take steps to reduce his own energy consumption is disingenuous,"
he said. "He's simply not taking all the steps he can take and should take as the leader of the environmental movement."

Rather than attacking one man — Gore — Johnson and his group should be taking a larger view and trying to make a difference to reduce global warming, Krider said.

That should include helping to get government and corporations, which are big energy users, on board to reduce energy and move to renewable resources, she said.

"They're trying to single out one person rather than look at the big picture," Krider said.
What saves a man is to take a step. Then another step.

Actually the White House is a government building. It was there long before W and will be there long after. And... the pursestrings and funding are not part of the executive branch.

In a yet more comic thing, W is much more Eco friendly than Gore and has been for a long time... And not falsely buying Eco Credits and using more power than some small South American Countries, like Gore does in total hypocrisy and yet trying to spin it.

Note the article from '01 by a guy as Bush friendly as Arlos, long before the current level of propaganda was being pushed.

The 4,000-square-foot house is a model of environmental rectitude

Geothermal heat pumps located in a central closet circulate water through pipes buried 300 feet deep in the ground where the temperature is a constant 67 degrees; the water heats the house in the winter and cools it in the summer. Systems such as the one in this "eco-friendly" dwelling use about 25% of the electricity that traditional heating and cooling systems utilize.

A 25,000-gallon underground cistern collects rainwater gathered from roof runs; wastewater from sinks, toilets and showers goes into underground purifying tanks and is also funneled into the cistern. The water from the cistern is used to irrigate the landscaping surrounding the four-bedroom home. Plants and flowers native to the high prairie area blend the structure into the surrounding ecosystem.

No, this is not the home of some eccentrically wealthy eco-freak trying to shame his fellow citizens into following the pristineness of his self-righteous example. And no, it is not the wilderness retreat of the Sierra Club or the Natural Resources Defense Council, a haven where tree-huggers plot political strategy.

This is President George W. Bush's "Texas White House" outside the small town of Crawford.

I find it amazing with his book deals and his ass jetting all over the country in his private jet(yeah that is eco friendly huh?) he still has a fairly high bill each month for someone who is not there but about prolly 20 percent of the time.

Still haven't seen any proof that his eco-foot print is any worse then other people in his position.

Still haven't seen any proof that his house is more pollutant than other houses its size.

Lyion, you're comparing a 20 room mansion to the average American house, most likely a two bedroom. Nice distortion of the facts.

You know for a fact that he's flying around in a private jet all over the place Kahar? Or are you just eating up all Lyion's rectal emissions.

Other people aren't running around telling Americans to turn off their power, conserve energy, and make sacrifices to go green.

Given his lectures and his political posturing, you'd think the guy lived in a small hut eating plankton, instead of having the carbon footprint of a landwhale.

Im certainly not a gore fan by any means, but in all fairness, someone in his position doesn't really have the option to live like that. I'm not saying he has to live on a gajillion acres with a big ridiculous beautiful house, but he does need increased security and his lifestyle definitely requires more than your average american.

I think in his case it really is kind of necessary to compare him to other people on the same scale - if he's doing what he can in comparison to other people of his class, I don't really find it terribly hypocritical.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/2006-08-09-gore-green_x.htm

For someone who says the sky is falling, he does very little. He says he recycles and drives a hybrid. And he claims he uses renewable energy credits to offset the pollution he produces when using a private jet to promote his film. (In reality, Paramount Classics, the film's distributor, pays this.)
