I can't think of a single man who has had more impact on the game of football in the modern era than Bill Walsh. How many teams use some variant of the West Coast offense? How many current coaches are part of his coaching tree? Beyond all of that, he fundamentally changed the way coaches approach teaching and researching the game.
He was the driving force behind one of the greatest sports dynasties ever, the 1980s 49ers. He helped resurrect them for a few years in the 90s. He was a top-notch college coach at Stanford as well.
To put it as bluntly as one of the local writers: he was our Vince Lombardi.
