Get lots of conversation pieces. We have great parties because every room is filled with stuff that makes people go "WHOA! What is that?!" Also, get things that allow people to entertain themselves so you are not working too hard as a host. In my fish room I have obviously the aquarium but I also have a small 13" TV and an old NES with Mario and Zelda games. Everyone loves those. There is seating for about 6 in there. The "media" room has enough seating for around 10 people for watching movies on the big screen but it also has a chess board, my Virtual Boy, lots of artwork and coffee table books, etc. My studio is cramped for seating but has my turntables, all my records, synths, bass guitar, drum machines etc where people can jam, play some records, etc. We also have a small room for people to do things they don't want others to see that has a locking door. Upstairs has our "sitting room" with a nice couch and two Chaise lounges with another TV and Xbox if people want to watch something or play system link games with the folks downstairs. The dining room is where we play cards and has comfortable seating for 6-8 people with a round table, has the bar and the sliding glass door to the back deck where we have seating for another dozen or so people. We can play croquet and badminton in the yard and can turn the underground sprinklers on for the kids in the summer. We also have a fire pit in the yard and seating around that for roasting squirrels, cats, etc and telling ghost stories.
Oh, get a case of Miller High Life, a bag and a big bong. Those are always hits too.
