Hugo Chavez

Wannabe despot. I wish the media would spend more time on this goob, and the progressives who support him from here.
Essentially he has a referendum up for vote that is going to give him dictatorial powers and what he's saying is if it doesn't pass, it's an inside CIA job from the Bush administration, and he will retaliate by not selling oil to the U.S.

I'm sure all the hollywood people who visit and love him will speak out against him.....

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20071201/ts ... referendum

A threat by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to stop oil exports to the United States has raised the stakes over a Sunday referendum he has called in a bid to expand his powers.

Chavez told tens of thousands of supporters late Friday he was putting Venezuela's oil field and refineries under military "protection" and would halt the exports "if this (referendum) is used as a pretext to start violence in Venezuela."

He accused the US Central Intelligence Agency of preparing to spread unrest during the plebiscite in an effort to topple him, and said if its operation was activated "there won't be a drop of oil from Venezuela to the United States."

The menace was an escalation of anti-US rhetoric Chavez has long employed, and highlighted both Venezuela's pivotal role as South America's biggest oil producer, and the parlous relations between Washington and Caracas. ....

The referendum calls for a scrapping of term limits for the president, opening the way for Chavez to stay on past 2013, when he is due to step down. ... Changes to allow the government to take over the central bank and expropriate private property in the name of "economic socialism," and gag the media in times of emergency are also being proposed.
What saves a man is to take a step. Then another step.

I work on base and Citgo is the gas we have here. my incredibly republican (with topics that are convenient for him, anyway) dad refuses to buy the gas on base because it's from venezuela.

if you can't even buy gas on a US government base because you hate another country that much.. I think you have some issues ><

Your daddy is a wise and patriotic man. I won't buy fuel from Citgo either.

I'm sorry, but not buying gasoline at a Citgo station isn't going to have much effect. The reason is that really all you are refusing to purchase is the Venezuelan additive. You are still at some point going to be buying oil from Venezuela indirectly, via crude refined into gas and branded by another oil company when it's additives are mixed in. You really want to reduce or eliminate sending your money to Venezuela, reduce your oil consumption either by driving less and/or by buying a hybrid.

I thought the whole issue was that the Venezuelan government literally OWNED Citgo (hence the profits are going into their pockets). There's a lot more money going towards them if they gain from all aspects of oil production (crude, refinement, shipping).

Am I wrong about that? (No idea, it's what I had heard a long time ago).

That's a pretty incorrect assertion of my dad actually. he's your stereotypical super conservative self proclaimed "christian" who doesn't do anything that he preaches, but is the first to say that no one knows anything about anything except for him and fox news. anyone who has a differing viewpoint is completely wrong and stupid to boot. he is the republican american who makes the rest of the world scoff at americans, and makes me ashamed to be one at times. he is also a large contributing factor in my stances changing to lean towards the democratic party, and the longer I work on base, the more they shift as well.. so many people here are clones of him, and it's repulsive and embarrassing.

don't buy citgo, that's fine, but the fuel is going to come from somewhere, and chances are you won't like where it's coming from based on the american mindset that anyone who doesn't run as we do is wrong - that's totally fine, to each his own. but to not buy it on a GOVERNMENT base? if you can't buy your gas on base, that's where you start teetering over the edge. you won't buy gas on a government funded facility, but at the same time it's being patriotic..?

I will continue to buy my gas wherever it's cheapest, and that's on base, and it happens to be citgo. I can pay 3.15 a gallon to give the proverbial finger to them even though in the end they don't care about my 40 dollars and they'll get it anyway, or I can pay 2.99 a gallon and save my wallet. So long as the government allows it in, people will buy it.
