Good, if you don't speak English well enough to be understood you're a fucking failure. I can speak both Spanish and Portuguese well enough to get by because this area is filled with a bunch of illegals from Guatamala and Cape Verde. Most don't even take the time to try learning much English because we're almost fucking forced to learn their languages because they're fucking cockroaches.

well, in all fairness even though I'm disagreeing with Zan on this one.. your post, albeit typical stirring the pot on your part, is a pretty terrible comparison overall. spanish and portuguese are two of the easiest languages to learn, and english the most difficult. not being able to learn english doesn't make anyone a failure; english is probably the most nonsensical language in the world - it's only easy for us because it's what we were raised with.

Zan, in all seriousness, you really just don't know how it is down here in the lower 48. It's one thing to be proud of a heritage, ancestry, culture, etc... it's quite another to berate and get indignant with people that don't speak your language in their own country. I assure you, there isn't a business owner in customer service that doesn't deal with this on a daily basis here. I am talking about people that can read, write, and speak English, but insist that you're an idiot for expecting them to. Believe what you want, but we live it daily, and it's not an exaggeration. It's really quite ridiculous.
My mother even has regular occurrences that go something like, "Crazy bitch come into my store today, scream at me because I can't speak Spanish to her. LOOK AT ME! I CHINESE! YOU STUPID!?"

Last I checked, Europeans didn't speak Cherokee, Iroquois or any of those languages when they first set foot on America.

The beauty of America and what makes it great is it's diversity. I agree that the store owner has the right to serve whom he pleases but to put a statement out like that is stupid business plain and simple. Now, I can see if they are losing business because of the extra time it takes to decipher non english but other than that he's making a stupid business move. And yeah, you can tell me all day how successful the place is and how they have lines out the door but good business is about maximizing and you don't do that by turning away your customer base without good reason.

My parents struggled early on when they immigrated here to escape the Vietnam War. They spoke no english and worked and eventually became entrepreneurs. It annoys me that there are certain times where I've required a spanish speaker and that there are lazy people who live here 20 years and still don't speak spanish, but there's white people who are lazy too and it just so happens they speak english. Also, what's convenient doesn't always make it what's right. I think some of you Americans forget how we got this country in the first place and that that demand is simply hypocritical. So many of us are quick to say "my house my language my rules" when someone else wants some of our country's greatness but won't lift a finger to do anything to benefit our country. IMO the idea of helping common man isn't about helping Americans and only Americans but rather helping whoever is there and needs it and in this case, it means helping those who can't communicate our way. Nevermind their commitment to learning the language of this country or naturalizing. The American way of life is about accepting those in need and building a community from them. Thanksgiving Dinner, one of the most American things ever, came from European immigration and their lack of ability to communicate being overcome with good gestures.

However, you are comparing land-grabbers and invaders with people who are trying to integrate themselves into a society. It's not the same thing. If the Europeans had joined the various tribes they encountered and tried to live within their culture, then they would have been wrong to insist the Native Americans become bilingual to deal with them, right?
