Best man speech.

Postby Harrison » Wed Aug 26, 2015 3:42 pm

I was thinking of just straight up reciting a famous speech before a movie battle of some sort, like Braveheart, Independence Day, Armageddon, etc.

Is that even that witty or appropriate?

Would that go over like a fart in church? I need opinions. I can write up the usual semi-witty roast style speech, or go with this. I was just curious what others thought of the idea.

Obviously I would tweak the speech to be relevant and not a straight recital lol

One good option if you want to do that is to quote the "Mawwage. Mawwage is wot bwings us togeffer todayyy" from the wedding scene in Princess Bride.

I did the start of that at a friend of mine's wedding back in December, and about 2/3 of the guests about lost it laughing as I said it. That's all of it that I quoted for my toast, but it was plenty.

LOL that is a very good idea as well.

I have a couple days to whip something up. I might open with that to break the ice so to speak.

i've never given a best man speech before but if i were at a wedding where the best man recited a famous speech (even tweaked a bit) i'd probably roll my eyes and make wisecracks to my tablemates

it's a decently cool idea to START with something instantly recognizable, such as the princess bride riff, but don't take it more than a sentence or two deep. there's a big difference between "haha that dude quoted ______" and "uhhh he really is gonna do the whole thing isn't he". do a line or two if you want, but after that you gotta go personal and show some real heart; make your audience feel something. by the time your speech is done, everyone in the room should understand why that guy picked you as his best

To be honest this entire affair gives me nearly crippling anxiety.

I failed miserably at my best man speech. I have crippling social anxiety as well and when it came time to speak, I just shut down. Ugh... hate it.

Start it with "Fornication...fornication..." then wait for the gasps, then continue "for an occasion such as this..."

My buddy did that and it garnered an eruption of laughter.

then i would go with arlos' suggestion—open with some mawwage and once everyone's had a good giggle, you can get to the meat of your speech with eased nerves. and honestly, just speak from the heart. you guys obviously have a tight bond if you're his best dude, so just be genuine and let him know how happy you are for him and how wonderful his lady is* and how honored you are to be a part of the whole thing.

speak from the heart! you'll do great.

*it's really appreciated when the speecher makes an effort to include both halves of the couple, so if you can, i recommend it.

I wish I could just write it out and hand out a paper to everyone.

Lol I'd nail that...

Start it off with:

"I wanna give some advice to the groom to be. First you'll need some materials.

1. Nice picture frame, 8x12'ish
2. Scanner/copier/printer etc.
3. Dictionary or Thesaurus "

;)

So, I was extremely mortified by the entire thing and stumbled my way through it painfully and awkwardly.

I pulled it together at the end, however. (The bride's father interrupted me in my flow and I just lost my entire train of thought. I didn't recover well, at all.)

Oh well, there's always next...oh, shit. :dunno:

meh, it's fine. i'm sure it was very endearing that you were nervous. :D i kind of biffed my MOH speech for my childhood bestie, and no one really remembers it, so it's cool.

i will never forget the speech my brother-in-law gave at our wedding reception, though. it was really good. he sent me a copy of it so i could always go back to it. :boots:
