PVP in WOW

Post by Lyion »

I'm just curious if anyones interested in playing on the PVP server when it comes out.

WOW really has a great PVP setup, especially with the Horde vs. Alliance dynamic.

My only concern is population imbalance and goals of PVP.

PVP will add a lot more fun than just killing epics or farming, I think.

As of right now, pvp is horrible. Take LoS back in the day and let them be able to grief everything and anyone in the game. Imagine the bankers being kited or quest NPC perma-killed. Right now there is no reason to even kill the opposite faction other than for fun. You can also see invis characters because you can see their names still. Undead characters in PvP are absolutely worthless because priests and paladins own you non-stop. The horde is outnumbered 3 to 1 right now as well. There's also zoneline camping where mages stand along the zoneline and wait till people pass and then nuke them dead. Supposedly they're working on a lot of things to change the problems but who knows.

They've said repeatedly that they've not even really started to work on the real PVP rules yet, that they just opened up the server so they could start to get some balance issues potentially looked at. They've also said repeatedly that even on non-PVP servers, they intend to have instanced PVP battleground areas, but they haven't said anything about how that's gonna work or what the rewards are going to be. I would expect big changes to the way PVP works over on the PVP server, just dunno when it'll happen.

That said, I have less than zero interest in playing on the PVP server, ever. PVP in a persistant MMO with a penalty for death, even if it's only time and annoyance (or needing to re-clear an area I was camping) requires a certain level of constant paranoia that I simply do not in any way find fun, whatsoever. Also, there's the large question of what, if anything, to do about griefing. Lots of people hate griefing, for obvious reasons, but a very vocal set of hardcore PVPers scream bloody murder at the concept of outlawing it. Not that I can understand what a L50 would get out ofrepeatedly killing a L20 and screwing his game play, but that's just me.

Now, consensual duelling or planned PVP battles, similar to the Test of Tactics stuff we did back in EQ, that can be fun, especially when nothing is at stake other than bragging rights. But constantly having to worry, when I'm out there trying to do a quest or get some XP about some random ass coming by, waiting til a mob has almost killed me, then blowing me down... No, that's just simply no fun at all for me, sorry.

PVP when done right adds a huge amount of flavor and excitement to a game.

The problem is griefing and a reason for PVP, so its not simply Quake in Everquest.

I hope blizzard will look at PVP and implement a good system. A good PVP battle to me 100x more fun than an epic encounter.

Well, I disagree with you, I find that PVP being generarlly enabled makes a game far LESS fun for me. That's one of those personal flavor things though, like one person liking steak, and another liking fish. Fortunately, Blizzard plans on making both kinds of servers, so we can both be happy.

Well, if its done right.. I enjoyed DAOCs PVP.

I don't have a good impression of WOW PVP, and unless they make wholesale changes, I won't be more than a part time WOW PVPer.

I'd like to have the best of both worlds: Hardcore epic raids, and good battles over territory and sieges.

Well, I know they plan on making wholesale changes, so hang on and see what they do, and then make your decision. By no means is PVP even remotely close to final as yet.

Dude, do you know how much I wished those stupid fucks would just turn that stupid fucking stone into a pvp arena

O i mean the one to the left of valor stone.

I mean what the fuck kind of stupid fucking retards would make a pvp arena in the bazaar then leave it there?

An arena in potranq would have created astronomical amounts of energy

Heh, I didn't say I was BAD at it, Kaba. ;) It's just that I didn't like unrestrained PVP. Duels and TOT-type stuff are fine, those're fun. But the ongoing risk of some random twit nuking you down when you just finished a tough fight, costing you time and effort, naw, not fun.

Maturity on PvP servers doesnt exist. And is the only thing holding them back if you ask me.

Random ganking is fine, but griefing to the point of making you want to find them and slaughter them IRL is not.

Little kids with emotional problems ruin MMORPG's

pvp in UO was great tikker wtf.

Ok you did have groups of gang bangers greifing everywhere. But it also allowed picking pockets.!@

Full PvP let you play a THIEF! I have never had as much fun in any mmorpg as I did playing my Thief, Stupid Bastard, and his band of merry men called, The Annoyance of Vesper.

We stole everything we could get our grimy hands on, we broke into peoples homes with the keys we had lifted. We would go into a dungeon naked as the day we were born and walk out with full gear and plenty of extra lewts.

We would go to player run events and rob the people holding the prizes, or enter the event and if we did not win, rob the people who did!

UO rocked (note past tense)

now its sorta like the Sims with swords.

full blown no rules PVPis GREAT (providing you can be a thief)

I prefer the term homosexual.

Also me being gay had nothing to do with the desire to steal from others...

I loved early UO PVP. Yeah, there was griefing, but the majority of the griefers were morons, and it was nice to steal their stash due to their idiocy.

I had a great time, but quit when EQ came out. There just was no comparison between gameplay

Actually I would specialize in stealing keys, then offering to sell them back for 500 gold.

Most people would tell me to "FUCKING DIE YOU FUCK THEIF FUCK YOU GURADS GADRSE !!! Bank"

So I ended up near the end of my career with roughly 600 house keys ( no lie)

I ended up ransacking 40 small houses, a few two stories and 5 towers from the keys alone.

I do not count the other buildings I ransacked due to finding chests with runs in them next to keys ( so convienient)

It tooks me two small houses to hold all the loot stacking backpacks up as high as I could get them on every floor tile!

God I missed UO. I was the ultimate loot whore
