OK, another EQ2 design decision I don't understand

I don't care if it's EQ1, or EQ2, or WoW or CoH or whatever.

A limit of 4 characters across all servers is idiotic. Hell, a limit of 4 characters per server sounds pretty stupid to me as well (except in special cases like some of the old EQ PvP servers).

I am not sure how many characters I played in EQ on and off, it was far far more than 4.

That does not count mules.

SoE has a certain... history of moronic moves - this just seems to be more of the same old bullshit.

Im a bit of an EQ2 fanboy I guess, but I agree here. 4 to me seems too low. Even 6 would be better. Especially since its total, not per server.
You were right Tikker. We suck.

I think it's cool simply because I would feel less sketchy about hooking up newbs.

That's a good point, hadn't thought of that. I loved hooking up low level people, but man, especially after a few years, it got too risky. I had no idea if the person was a newb or some bottomfeeder scavenging free loot. This should mitigate that somewhat.

"You want to play a different class, you just swap out gear and switch to that job"

bah i can do that now, i can play warr type, switch to caster, switch to rogue type

but i still have 6 other characters on same server, 1 on pvp, 2 on a diff server to see friends at that arent on my mains.

That's the point. I could do it all on my main, I didn't need to have 35 alts all guilded just so I could find out what's happening in guild (shell). It was handy, some would have dug and took advantage others wouldn't. I liked the feature.
