The term "Berzerker" comes from ancient Norse texts and sagas, and is backed up by some of the more recent anthropological studies. "Ber-serk-hers" where thought to be men the Vikings used as shock troops, who would go into some form of rage and throw himself into battle. They wore light or no armor, but carried heavy swords and axes. It is believed this "rage" may have been induced by the eating or drinking of a tea made from a certain mushroom that lives in most regions of Scandenavia. This mushroom contains some of the same things found in speed or crank. However, most recent studies indicate they also contained other toxic compounds, and in order to get a speed like high, you would have to ingest fatal amounts of the mushroom, which leads me to believe berzerkers are more myth-lore than anything.
