Monks in EQ2!

Postby Tadpole » Fri Nov 12, 2004 7:53 pm

I cannot find anything on Monks. Are they any good, or do they suck and completely unbalanced like in EQ1? I kinda want to be a Barbarian Monk.

Not whining, just curious because if they are like they are in EQ1, I won't play one because there is no reason to.

From all reports on the monk boards, yeah, monks are an awful lot like EQ1. Still can't tank worth a damn, and don't do enough extra damage to justify taking one over a scout class.

Main sentiment from the horde that tested EQ2 is don't bother playing a monk, unless you're doing it solely cause of RP reasons, and aren't worried about being ineffective.

Not to mention with EQ2's mob grouping system, monks are no better pullers than a cleric or any other class. Also, Fiegn Death is damn near worthless, because you only stay fiegned for a matter of seconds. (from what I hear)

Misinformation is not good people.

1. I was a 19th level brawler ('monk'). I tanked well I thought. Never had a problem tanking. Took damage, dealt damage, kept agro (as well as anyone in EQ2 can). And my combat animations were tits. If I were dual wielding staves and kicked, I would just kick out normally. But, if I were wielding a 2handblunt, when kicking, I would plant the staff, then swing my body around it and double kick in the face. Looks sweet.

2. Feign Death. Feign death still saves your ass. Its just not as reliable. You dont automatically stand up after a few seconds, or anything like that. And my troll had more than one death throe animation and at least two different screams. Again, FD still a very useful skill.

I went predator with release, and Im sort of regretting not going brawler. I miss FD :(
You were right Tikker. We suck.

EQ2 is a well designed game so far in newbie territory. SOE surprised the shit outta me. I'm actually impressed.

Only thing I don't like is the way they have quests set up. WoW's ! and ? > "Hey you!!, come over here and help me."

I will agree that the first 20 levels of EQ2 are pretty incredible. But it seems that as bad as I wanted to play this game, it just is not going to work out for me. Post 20 solo play is pretty much nonexistant. I play late at nights after the family goes to sleep these days, and after 20 you can't get away with much unless you are in a group of 3 people or so.

The other gripes that seem to be coming from the community are the differences in classes post 20. The classes are FAR from being tuned, and that hurts the game greatly in these first few months.

I guess until they patch up and get the game to it's proposed released state, I will be stuck in WoW, listening to the b.netters bitch and moan that they can't take out 50 npcs at once with there undead mage. But at least for now, WoW fits my playing style.

I'll be keeping a close eye on EQ2 for the next few months seeing what direction they go.

Lyion, I wasn't slamming out of reflex, I was getting my info from monks from the main monk board, who HAVE been playing. Plus, feedback from people I trust from OTHER tank classes. I think I have a reasonable record for slamming WOW Changes that I think are misguided, so it's hardly blind fanboyism. Perhaps moreso on the main WOW boards than here, but there you'd have to look for my posts under my WOW name of Ulfias.

Some of my taking impressions are from people like, say, that Afterlife member playing the guardian, and his comments on the tanking difference between guardians and other well-tanking classes such as the paladin. Add that to firsthand reports from people who PLAYED monks stating that their tanking was very definitely worse than more average tankers, and depended on Avoidance to boot, which as we all know, is vastly streakier than mitigation-based tanks.

So in one way you are right, I wasn't passing on first person reports. But if you want to see where I'm getting my info, go to http://www.monklybusiness.com and navigate over to the EQ2 forum, I'm not saying anything that wasn't said there tons of times.

Every post you make here about EQ2 is negative. Show me one good thing you've ever posted. You come here solely to criticize.

Go to the WOW Forums and read any of the class boards. What do you get? Its the same with any class forum

Afterlife has hooks into WOW. You know that. You obviously have personal issues with EQ2 and for WOW.

You are not subjective.

You have a prejudicial bias against EQ2 and parse bullshit from other boards. It'd be cool if it was balanced. Its not. Its 100% negative, which leads anyone with a shred of common sense to see you have an agenda.

Again, you havent played, you dont know, you seemingly dont care, so why are you passing on third hand info slamming a game you are personally clueless about?

I don't like everything handed to me on a platter. I also like that you don't get quests solely from NPCs. I've gotten quests from books, papers, maps, a bookcase, coins, etc and I'm sure there are tons I've missed.

Donnel is dumb. On the other hand....................monks really had the chance to be a great class. I hope EQ2 can balance that out.

Me too, and alsot hey do have a "!" now. But instead of a big exclaimation point the NPC will wave at you and becon you over, even if he doesn't say anything.

Almost everything in EQ2 gives a quest. Wanted posters, books, keys, half the drops, almost any piece of paper, anything broken that you find.

Some are entertaining too, I found a quest where the mask speaks to me. It COMMANDS ME TO DO EVIL! Last part of the quest "Give into your hate, kill 99 humanoids!"

Wow, I think this is the first post from a LoS member that has been positive about EQ2. I agree with Lyion: since all of the LoS posts are pro-WoW and anti-EQ2 (except obviously Kaemon's), they appear biased and lack objectivity.

You don't just get quests from people in WOW either. There's a bunch of wanted posters around that give quests, as well as a bunch of random objects, like books, stone obilisks, etc.
