Sorry I haven't responded to this post too busy at work but I did want to take direct you guys who have any interest to google vietnam war myths and do your own research.

As for Israel, I doubt they will try to reoccupy Lebenon as they learned their lessons about hostile occupation the first time. I think they will revert to just fire bombing the southern half and leaving it uninhabitable as a buffered "waste" zone.

Israel called up their reserves today. It looks like they are preparing for a major invasion of Lebanon.

The Israeli are massing ground forces (tanks, troops, armored personnel carriers and bulldozers) on the border getting ready for invasion.

An Israeli military radio station warned residents of 12 border villages in southern Lebanon to leave before 2 p.m. today.

Israel ground forces pushed across the border and took over a village in near the border today. According to the Israel military, they want to push Hezbollah beyond the Litani River, about 20 miles north of the border.

Israel agreed to the Clinton talks for peace at Camp David. Israel pulled out of the West bank. Israel has made concessions for the last 6 years trying to appease the Muslims of the region. What has it gotten them? Haifa being shelled by rocket attacks, kidnapped soldiers who were on israeli soil and suicide Palestinian scum blowing themselves up coming from the very ground Israel gave back.

Let go of the reigns and let them do what the need to do to secure their borders.

Israel could completely level Lebanon if they wanted. They strategically hit targets attacking them, in a powerul display of control.

If Hez could destroy all of Israel, it'd already be done.

Israel is a transparent democracy fighting for survival. Hezbollah is a gang of lawless thugs who kidnap, torture, and kill innocents and launch rockets at civilian populace haphazardly.

There is no basis of comparison. Condemn Israel for overreacting, if you choose but do not compare the two groups.

to try and derail the current unnecessary argument, i thusly pose a question.

two coworkers and i were talking about the whole mess yesterday, and one of the guys wasn't very knowledgeable about the area in general. the conversation was mostly between me, a dove, and gene, a guy who started out hawk but is leaning more and more to the dove side every day. kyle suddenly asked "why do we [as a country] care so much about israel anyway?" the conversation suddenly ground to a halt, as neither gene nor i could think of an official reason why our government is so blindly supportive of israel. american zionism is a primary basis for anti-american sentiments throughout the arab world, and one of the driving forces that led to both WTC attacks.

i believe every nation, ethnic group, religious group, social group, etc deserves to live in peace, and in this case Hezbollah was clearly the aggressor-- but that's MY answer to the question. what's the USA's official answer? is there one? if "protecting innocent people from aggression" is our answer, then why just israel? there are a dozen or so other wars going on all over the world. which side are we on in the civil war in Ivory Coast? which pony gets our applause in the Darfur battle royale, which a reuters poll declared "the world's most dangerous place for children"?

i don't want israel to get shitcanned any more than ganzo does, but our unwavering support has undeniably made us a crapload of enemies. so why do we do it? is there anything in it for us besides a warm fuzzy feeling?
