I'm an employer who has two applicants for a highly sought-after job. They both scored a '10' on my interview. They are equally qualified for the job and it simply comes down to education. One of them graduated high school with a 3.8 GPA, the other left 'for whatever reason' at age 16 and got their GED. Who do I hire?

Like I said, some 'equivalency graduates' get into 'life' and do well for themselves. The problem is... every school district in the area has an 'alternative' program for trouble-makers, crack-heads and other miscreants in which they can 'earn' their equivalency degree, separate from the 'normal' kids. I'm not saying that this is the average GED kid, but it's often the case. If you are going to go through life with no college degree, depending on >a< highschool diploma to get you by... cool. Good luck. But those people who think that there is no difference between a GED and the 'real' thing are blind.

And, yeah... 99% of the the people I meet who dropped out are total brain-dead losers. The ratio is a lot better for people who actually "made it" through high school. Maybe that's because I don't normally hang out with a gang of dropouts, so those that I do meet are usually pretty, well... Finawin. There is the occasional one-percenter who surprises me, and if he makes it through and actually gets an ENGINEERING degree, why... I'll eat my hat! Until then, he's lumped in with the remainder of the dropouts.

That is the average gap in earnings between adults with bachelor's degrees and those with high school diplomas, according to data from the Census Bureau.

College graduates made an average of $51,554 in 2004, the most recent figures available, compared with $28,645 for adults with a high school diploma. High school dropouts earned an average of $19,169 and those with advanced college degrees made an average of $78,093.

"There appear to be strong incentives to get a college degree, given the gaps that we observe," said Lisa Barrow, senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

Finawin got a GED. A Gee fucking E D. There is a reason why most of the nation laughs at this... why nobody... NOBODY hires anyone who quit school and grabbed their Good Enough Diploma at age 16. GED+degree? Sure. I hired a PHP programmer 2 months ago who had that... he's amazing. But he actually did it... he finished school. Up til now, Finawin hasn't done ANYTHING. He's cheering about $16.50... in Boston... omg, seriously.

So... Adivina, get pissed AFTER the fact. You stay in debt for 10 years and hate everyone who got a free ride through college. It's pointless to yell at people who 'talk' about their free ride, especially people with Harrison's stellar scholastic record.

Jay-Z's "Hard Knock Life" ran through my head during his "I had to raise 6 kids when I dropped out of high school at age 15 and I lifed in the ghetto of cambridge until I turned my life around and got my ged!" spiel. That, and I've listened to him bash higher education for, I don't know... 5 years? Now that it's free, he's ALL FOR IT. And yet he's calling 'us' out for taking the 'easy' way out. Puh lease.
