Women in combat is the Government 'trying to do the fair thing'. There is a great point of comparitive analogy to 'doing the right thing' in the movie Saving Private Ryan.

There is a point where they have to rush a German machine gun position with a small squad. They overtake it and a German survives and they take him prisoner.

The twidget in their squadron is upset the squad wants to kill the German because it is not the 'right and fair' thing to do. Everyone in the squad knows they should, but the Captain through an act of 'compassion' lets him go despite knowing while being 'correct and decent' that it will cost American lives. The same lives he sacrificed to be able to overtake the gunner position in the first place.

Later the same German shows up and kills some of them.

Letting women in combat may 'be the right thing'. It's too bad war has nothing to do with being right or fair.

As far as women in the militay, I really have no opinion on this. I have not surved and probably never will.

I have worked as a martial arts instructor and I can say for certain that even the best of the women couldn't stand long with men. Most of this had nothign at all to do with skill. The women were trained just as well and knew it just as much. The difference was that the women consistantly held back when it came to the killing blow where the men did not hesitate. I wathed many times as the women should have won that they lost simply because they wouldn't make the final hit. This hesitation could be the difference between life and death especially in a military or even in a police situation.

I was also in a town in NY where they were attempting to have the standards for women in the fire department lowered because there were not enough women passing the tests. The arguments on this were that women were not as strong and couldn't be expected to be as strong as the men. They were trying to prove that physical strength shouldn't be a determining factor in who could be a firemen and who couldn't. They had no problems with men who were not strong enough to pass the tests getting booted but that was different because they were men.

It turned out that 2 women were given jobs over much more qualified men. Of course I am sure this will change the day that one of the decision makers is at the top of a burning building and one of the women goes up to save him but cant lift his fat ass off the group and they both die.

As far as I am concerned, in civilian jobs everyone should be held to the exact same standards. Physical and mental. Anyone who doesn't meet those requirments should be dumped. These standards also shouldn't be lowered for everyone just because many women dont meet them. More or less, the job requires this. If you cant do it, get lost.

Finally, the women from the original post never should have been put in that situation. Nor should alot of men that wouldn't have been able to handle themselves if the worst happened (which it did). It never seems to occur to people to prepare for the worst case in situations like that. Had anyone with half a brain been in charge it would never have happened.
