Re: Big girls
my biggest turn on is when a girl has proper table manners.
ESPECIALLY with the napkin... that thing should never return to the table once you put it in your lap even if it is unused.

At the risk of sounding uncultured... what do you do when you're done with your dinner? Leave it on the seat behind you?

If he does, then he knows nothing about dining etiquette.

No, you fold it and place it to the left of your plate when you are ready to leave the table for the evening.
Placing it on the table during the course of the meal indicates that you are finished. If you are getting up to leave the table temporarily, it should be placed on your chair as an indicator to your waiter that you will be back.
Another key thing that I'd say that 95% of the people I have eaten with do not know is you do not cut your dinner rolls with a knife. Break it into reasonable sizes with your hands.
There is also the way that the person holds their knife and fork. I was taught to eat Continental style, but to recognize proper form in American as well.
The way someone approaches their food is incredibly telling about their background.

It bugs me when people salt their food before they even taste it.

Indeed.
Also to correct what I said earlier, you don't fold your napkin after you are finished so much as drape it down neatly.

Re: Big girls
I went to charm school and know that sort of thing, but honestly it's pretty unrealistic to expect people to behave that way unless they're in a very formal setting
I'd be damned if someone took me to Chili's and expected me to place my napkin on my chair and neatly place it by my plate when I'm finished. My waiters at simple restaurants like that *know* when I'm done because I stack my plates properly for them.
5 star dressy dinner, absolutely. If someone behaved that way at a normal casual dinner, I'd look at them and think them a stuffy snob.

God, that's a douchebag thing to say. You don't like a person because their background isn't as proper as yours? Give me a break. What possible difference could it make to your shallow life if someone you're dinning with doesn't know the secret hand-shake of elitism, by putting their napkin in the wrong place?
Etiquette is just a means to demean people who have sense enough not to give a shit about trivial stuff like that.
You're such a poser sometimes, Atensen.

LOL, I know what you mean there. Some people just love salt.

Re: Big girls
Sorry for being honest, but I was raised to use proper table manners and I respect others who had a shared background. I attend several black tie events throughout the course of every year because of my father's family. Either I take someone who can stand on their own in that sort of social setting or I don't invite them. Sorry for being from a background that requires me to dress up and know proper decorum.

you're just in full on cunt mode lately
just like you have certain social standards (ie you wouldn't be interested in someone who thought blowing their nose on the table cloth) other people have different ones
it's not elitist to want someone with similar background/standards/social skills
Re: Big girls
For shame if a women ever put her napkin in the wrong place. That could possibly signal to the waiter that she owes him a yack on the up coming solstice. Then what would you do?!?!
Etiquette is just a list of arbitrary rules put in place to ensure the divide between upper and middle class. To even acknowledge them, let alone require them, is just perpetuating that kind of horrible behaviour.

that's just wrong on so many levels
Just like I don't want to go to a hockey game with someone clueless about hockey, why should going out to dinner not follow the same rules?
pull your head out of your ass for once

He's not just talking about black-tie events, he said he likes a girl to know "proper" manners.
If she doesn't know the proper hand gesture/foot stomp/wink to kick off tea time he's not interested. Cool beans, it means he's shallow.
Re: Big girls
so you're ok with some chick blowing their nose on the table cloth?
or how about stealing all the silverware?
maybe scraping her leftovers onto the floor?
that wouldn't turn you off at all?

Aren't you a smoker? A smoker worried about good etiquette is like a trailer park owner worried about house values.

I never smoke indoors, let alone at a dinner table... this was even before they banned smoking in public places. I did this out of respect for not only my company, but other patrons at any given establishment.
When I am going to smoke, I pay attention to my location and whom else is around me.
I do not smoke around children ever.
I excuse myself and walk away if I am in the company of those whom do not smoke and those whom I have no knowledge of being smokers.
I pay attention to which way the wind is blowing if I am walking with a cigarette, lest I accidentally blow smoke towards someone else. If I am in a crowded area, I simply do not smoke.
I wash my hands or use hand sanitizer in addition to breath mints after smoking to neutralize the odor. If I am at my own house, I will Fabreeze myself at the doorway.
So I would say that your remark is entirely off base and a poor attempt at an insult.

meeper's method of holding a spoon in his clenched fist like a child must have driven you crazy
Chances are very good that you've never touched Linux a day in your pathetic life.
Re: Big girls
yeah, but as with everything there is a time and a place
to have manners is one thing; to treat a casual dinner with friends at a regular old restaurant as a black tie affair is just pompous.
(sorry I tried to post this like 4 times earlier but it kept timing out)

that's a different context tho
there's different rules for different places
like, if i'm out eating hotwings
you don't put the bones back on the same plate as the wings
most of it's just common sense really
