you could breed it out of a "race" through selective breeding (culling)
anemia isn't a dominant trait, it's like blue eyes
ie, both parents need to have a blue eye gene to pass it on to their children. if one parent is brown/brown the baby will have brown eyes. both parents have to be blue/brown, or blue/blue (or any combination of the 2)
if you consistently breed a carrier with a non carrier, you'll remove anemia from the gene pool in xx generations (based on the size of the population)

Well it's homozygous lethal, isn't it? And heterozygous you still get sick. But you survive malaria better. So it's a survival trait in populations where malaria is endemic.

Exactly, in circumstances where malaria is a survival pressure, a certain frequency of the sickle cell gene becomes a benefit.

In practice this is nearly impossible to achieve within a significant population, provided the recessive trait is not survival selected against. You're also not guaranteed removal of the gene within any fixed number of generations, just a decreasing probability of it being passed on with each generation.

Sickle-cell anemia is a single amino acid change in a hemoglobin chain.
Inheriting two copies of the mutant gene is lethal. Getting one copy gives you the disease.
The problem is that if you live in an area with endemic malaria, having one copy of the gene lets you survive it better. And malaria's nasty.

DDT > Malaria, which goes to show that enviromentalists are nothing but a bunch of white racists! The banning of DDT was yet another plot to destroy the black man!

Umm what are you on Wrath Child. DDT will do nothing to the average human being unless you are constantly exposed to it for a period of time.
Malaria is a nasty virus that never leaves until you are dead.
I guess having a huge amount of DDT put on you might be worse than malaria, but that would likely kill you.

Wrath was pointing out that DDT was an effective method of countering the spread of malaria. He then proceeded to surmise that "The Man" banned DDT in order to cause harm to Africans by removing a barrier to malaria epidemics. Yes, he was being sarcastic.

That's not always 100% true, there are recessive genes.

Anemia isn't one of them
(not in the sense you are implying)
Both parents need to have one of the altered genes each. Two for each need to be altered to have the actual disease. (the child)

This sounds like a description of a recessive trait to me.

you could breed that out of a population if you tried

you get 2 genes for eyes
1 from mom
1 from dad
if both are blue, baby has blue eyes
if 1 is blue, and one is brown, baby has brown eyes
if both are brown, baby has brown eyes
the blue eye gene is considered recessive because if brown is present, it will take priority
you pair enough blue eye'd people(or even better brown eye'd people with 1 blue gene) with people who have 2 brown genes, you can eliminate blue eyes from a population (over time)

forgot to add this
both parents could display brown eyes, but carry 1 brown, 1 blue
but if you continually breed those people, with just brown/brown, you'll wipe out the blue eye trait

My Dad has brown hair and brown eyes. My mom has blonde hair and blue eyes. I had blonde hair and blue eyes as a baby, and I still do, although my hair is "dark blonde" now. Am I not understanding what you said?

Then your father was heterozygous.
You get two copies of the gene for eye color. One from mom's egg, one from dad's sperm.
Blue eyes only show up if the child gets two copies of the gene for eye color being blue. So your mom has 2 copies of the blue eye gene ('blue/blue'), and she gave you one (she had to, after all).
Your dad could be either 'brown/brown' or 'brown/blue' -- but YOU'RE blue eyed, so we know he couldn't have given you a 'brown eye' gene, or you'd have brown eyes. So he had to give you a 'blue' gene. So he in turn has to have 'brown/blue' genes for eye color.
So if you marry a blue eyed woman, have kids, and they come out brown eyed, call your lawyer, 'daddy'.
