The problem primarily rears its head when you pick up a pet that's significantly lower level than you. The pet used to gain a fraction (half? It's been a while since I spent much time on a hunter) of the experience you gained from a mob, which is in turn based on the level discrepancy between the player and the mob. This meant you'd have to grind level 55+ mobs at sixty if you wanted to level up a new critter, while using an essentially useless pet. Now, Blizzard's adopted a much more reasonable solution of having the pet gain experience based on the difference between the mob's level and the pet's level, though the mob still must be green or better to the player.

i honestly think they shouls seriously revamp the leveling of the pets...i do agree 100 percent with tik on this one. Hell i have had a elite pet bat for about 12 levels now and that thing is a real bitch to kiepp leveld up with me. By the time I have reached mid level my pet is just now dinging his level. if they made it so pets gained xp depending on use in battle (perhaps giving them double xp upon rested status) it might make it a little more easy.

I loathe to give up this pet even though his attack most likely is not as uberiffic as say a named my level but it would be nicce to be able to boost attack of a certain pet thru training or a quest of some kind.

More pet customization is in the works. Eventually you'll be able to spend points on most facets of a given pet to mold them to your playstyle.

Meanwhile Paladins still have no controllable pvp dps that doesn't take talent points.

the problem is you don't know what people are complaining about =P

try being lvl 60

go tame the Rake

now level him to 60

then come back and say you don't understand

Ok, I had the perspectives confused.
Gotcha - thank you ;)

Yes sir!

Actually I main healed in Scarlet Monestary the other day at level 39ish and was complimented at how well I did. First time being main healer in a group.

It was pretty cool

Before I got into the group though I had solo'd back past the first courtyard in the library wing while waiting on a group. Takes forever to kill stuff, but it was pretty easy.

Fortunately, there's more to the game than DPS.

DPS is still king for PVP for the foreseeable future.

I qualified my statement... controllable pvp dps.

I don't want more dps I just want controllable... like every other class has.

You obviously have no clue what pvp is like and what it takes to win then.

You get a 1 on 1 encounter maybe once a match if you're lucky. There is no better support class, period.

Either you have such enormous DPS that no amount of healing will help or you have good support players who allow you to actually do your dps. A dead player does 0 dps.

Problem is, exp/kill gained is not completely based on discrepency b/n pet's level and mob killed- the mob still needs to be sufficient level for the hunter to gain xp.
So, instead of being able to just go out and plowing through mobs that might be "red" to your pet, but far below your own level, at 60, the hunter must fight mobs green to him. This means they've got to be a minimum of lvl 49.

Also, your pet will eventually get close enough to this minimum level to both cease gaining that maximum amount of 400xp/kill, and the level disparity between it and the lvl 49 mob will still be too contribute to the kill rate in any meaningful fashion.

I snuck down to tame a bloodaxe worg the other night. Decided it was ugly, but I'd been looking for a wolf to experiment with (never had a wolf before, wanted to see how it compared to my cat and bear). Believe it took me a bit over 4 hours of non-stop killing (whipper roots+demonic stones= 0 downtime) of jadefire satyrs (~53-55) to advance from 57 to 58.

Even though he only require a quarter of the xp to level from 29-30, it took significantly longer (how long exactly I can't recall, was back a few days before they even announced what 1.7 changes would be) to level the Humar I was messing with because I had to tank everything (in teh face) but the Hellcallers (may resist them 50/50, but those fireballs and hellfires still hurt), then bandage/eat/drink whatever every 2-3 kills. Lots of downtime, and 0 support from pet.

Decided it wasn't worth it, and if I really wanted a black cat, I'd just nab a Jaguero Stalker from STV. At least they're 50 already, and the difference in performance between 1.5 speed vs. 1.3 will be imperceptible by human senses. Hell, they're an even less common sight in Orgrimmar than Humar. Of course, I ended up ditching it in favor of a shy-rotam (since it's already 60) because ten levels is still a ton of work.

Most of my PVPing is done on a PVP server, and there burst DPS is king, although the encounters are much different. I have a 60 Paladin, so I'd say I know the class better than the horde types here who have never PVPed with one.

Good groups do more efficient and better DPS and win. Period. DPS is king in PVP. It isn't the ONLY thing, of course, but massive firepower wins over defense in PVP in WOW every time, sans when you fight inept people of which WOW has more than their fair share of.

-edit

WOW is less team focused than my experiences in Lineage 2 or DAOC PVP server, but much better than say UOs old PVP.

And how do you do efficient DPS? By having reliable healing. You're wrong, mana bars run out, hit points run out. If you can outlast even with inferior dps then you can still win. How do you think Paladins do so well as a support class in pvp? They are the ultimate battle healer, they have huge survivabilty. So you're screwed both ways, you can either take time to kill the pally and get beat on by everyone else or you can hope to god your dps outdoes the paladin healing. The only real way around it is putting the pally out of commision either through sleep sap poly blind etc etc. Repentence pallies are especially nasty for pvp.

How does my prior pvp experience have anything to do with pvp in WoW? I think my rank and rep speak for themselves.

Someone who has done heavy PVPing in Shadowbane, Lineage 2, and DAOC understands MMO PVP a bit better, in my opinion. There is not a huge difference between PVP in fantasy MMORPGs. The Paladin in WOW operates almost IDENTICALLY to the Paladin in DAOC. Someone who has played DAOC and understands group roles knows how to deal with Pallys.

The best groups I've fought on Frostwolfe were those who had a history of PVP from other games.

My experiences is the better burst DPS groups who know how to work as a team win.

YMMV, as most groups in WOW are pickups and suckass. If you play on a server full of retards, you'll have a higher rank than a heavy PVP server with a lot of guilds with a history of MMO PVP fighting.

And like I said, you have no clue how pvp in WoW works anymore. Even on the pvp servers there is next to no "world pvp". The discussion here was PVP in WoW. Not pvp in MMO's.

Sure if you wanted to play free for all quake style deathmatch then it's a different story. The discussion was pvp in WoW. There's a lot more strategy involved besides take 5 of the highest dps guys and go kill object A.
