With each passing month, Sony is returning to its glory days in both financial success and public impression. Not only did it recently cut the price of its money-losing PlayStation 3, but Sony unveiled optimistic results from its latest quarter. The numbers are staggering: net profit soaring by 4,300 per cent from last year, and operating profit at its electronics division increasing 12-fold to $939 million.
One of the biggest stories from Sony’s past quarter is the recovery of its electronics division, which accounts for 70 per cent of the company’s annual $70 billion in worldwide sales.

FWIW - i sent in my rebate thing for my 5 bluray movies and haven't gotten shit yet. It's been 3 months so far, so I'm still holding out hope.
Also I'm not 100% on what HDDVD disks support but those $99 players spec'd out at 1080i/720p instead of 1080p for playback, unless I read something wrong.

Yep, these particular players output 1080i. 1080p output is really just marketing hype. Honestly. If you have a 1080p display, it automatically deinterlaces the 1080i signal so it's unnecessary to have 1080p output on your player.

well, that's cause there's not really any tv's out there that actually can display 1080i

lcd's can't
crt's can, but no one is reallybuying those anymore

90K estimated Toshiba HD-DVD players sold over the weekend. When Toshiba estimated they'd have a million standalones sold by Xmas including the 360 add on, I was sceptical but with somewhere around 600K sold already, nearly 2 months before Xmas and the ability to sell that amount in a weekend during the "firesale", I am starting to think they might hit that mark. It's obvious the demand for HD media is there, it's just a matter of making it affordable. I'd expect at least one other shipment of the A2's to blow out at various resellers at the $99 price point and the replacement model A3 to be priced strategically at below $200 for the rest of the shopping season and drop as low as $149 and possibly lower on "Black Friday".
Good news for HD-DVD and HDM in general. At this point, it's just ego and sheer ignorance keeping even the most stalwart Blu-Ray fans from buying in and going "format neutral".

C'mon Harri, this is lame. Toss and I disagree here but why not try to either contribute or ask questions.
I don't think there will be a format war winner anytime, soon. The best that can be hoped for is good, cheap dual players that support both Blu-ray and HD-DVD.
Also, while high def movies are 25 to 30 dollars a pop, most people won't be interested in buying many of them.
I think Toshiba was wise and by wholesale batman-shipping a ton for a loss they managed to help their cause, especially trying to pre-empt the bigger name Blu-ray titles upcoming. I think they may have won a battle, but this foray may cost them the war .I wonder how many of those cheapy HD DVD players will end up on ebay. The HD DVD players are back up to 200 dollars each. Who would want to pay that when their friends got them for 98 bucks?

Considering MOST people don't even own an HDTV yet, they are still fighting over the early adopters.
Selling 90K standalone players in a single weekend is a serious step in the right direction and for the first time since the beginning of the "war", people are thinking about HD-DVD and know that it is finally accessible. There will be a couple more blowouts by Walmart and the like before xmas. The BDA doesn't like to release numbers but estimates of less than 150K BR standalones sold total since the format was released paints a pretty grim picture for BR for the holiday season. PS3 users are not buying movies even when there are no games to play on their PS3s. I'd expect once more decent games start coming out for the console, the amount of movies being purchased will actually go down.
I expect Toshiba to sell another 300K+ standalones and MS to sell another 50K+ add ons before Xmas putting nearly a million standalones in peoples homes. At that point studios will actually start turning a nice profit on films and support for BR will dwindle away leaving Sony with another failed format.

I'm still trying to figure how you think you can just discount the ps3 as a blu-ray player?
i had a ps2 to play dvd's for a long time before I had a standalone dvd player, and I know a few others who have ps3's and buy/watch movies on that as well

Because the software sales rates are split 60/40 Blu-Ray to HD-DVD with nearly 5-1 hardware sales in Blu-Rays favor because of the PS3. If people were buying movies for their PS3's it'd be game over but they aren't.
