My daughter was in Kindergarten last year, and while the public schools here aren't horrible, at about 4-6th something breaks down. I figure it's because some basic principle is getting skipped early on that degenerates into real problems later.

Homeschooling is something I had looked into since my oldest was born and seriously considered it before she went to school last year. If we had stayed in GA I would have homeschooled from the beginning.

I do wonder about the missed socialization mainly because I see how much they really enjoy themselves at Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. But I can't see ruining their education for recess and it's not like I don't have activities planned that involve other kids.

I homeschooled until I was in the 4th grade. I found myself having great difficulties being able to socialize once I did go to school. It wasn't until highschool that I finally fit in.

I would personally never recommend homeschooling.

Although I didn't attend public school, one of the problems I had heard repeatedly with the teachers in the district was that once they were tenured, they stopped giving a shit. Obviously there were exceptions to this, but it was a cause for concern if it was the main subject of PTA gossip.

I absolutely loved private school, although the blazer and tie did get old (regardless of what my mom thought).
