Words are just that, words. They only mean something when people such as your selves push those labels onto people.
20 years ago Negro was acceptable for a word for a black person. They did not care, but suddenly some nutjob that thought the word was bad became offensive. And all of the sudden use that word in Cabrini Green or Queens and you will get shot.
You place meanings on words that dont need to be worried about.
You know i have been called Mick a few times in my life, however I dont take offense. Nor will I give offense to someone who calls me that. Why because it is just a word.
When you people stop placing high end stress labels on anyone and everything then perhaps we can move on.
FYI most Irishman in ireland dont give a rats ass about being called a mick even though it has been a slang label for us for centuries. Why is that? I could give a few reasons but I doubt neither side will see eye to eye on this.
Indians take offense to being called indians. They prefer being called by their tribe name. that has not changed, however people like you still do it. Can you tell the difference between one trib and the next? Prolly not.
When you ask most indians what nationality they are most will say "I am Blackfoot' or I am "Comanche' they dont say. Im an indian. however the term indian is offensive to most of them but you still do it.
I don't understand how you are not getting this. It's doesn't matter what YOU think about it.
It's like taking a bat to someone's kneecap and telling them to sack up because it didn't hurt your hands any.

I still find it funny a bunch of whites are arguing racism.

As funny as the rest of us find comments about relationships, etc from someone who's never had sex in his life?

No, that is completely different and a pathetic attempt to divert this conversation away from its course.

Why is it funny that whites are discussing racism? White people can be effected by racism just like any other race. They can also be offended by it. If i'm around a Spanish person and someone is going on and on about spics this and spics that. I'm offended for them. It's no different for white people to be upset and/or offended by racism towards other races.

Okay, I think I can speak on this issue due to my different perspective (maybe not, but it seems like it). I grew up in Mississippi, and I have known several members of the KKK. I have also lived in the northeast for the past 12 years, and know, directly, what it's like to have people assume that because of where I'm from that I'm stupid, uneducated, and a racist. Most of you don't know me at all, but you should trust me that I am none of the above.
Now, every KKK member that I have met made the same arguments as Kahar. Every single one. I COMPLETELY agree with Zanchief and Arlos and judge Kahar and Finawin to be a racist.
Most people have prejudices. My parents do, and heck, I do. But I don't spew race-based hatred on a message-board and pretend that I'm something I'm not. But there are plenty on this board who do, and I know it makes me uncomfortable opening it at work...
Oh, and, Kahar and Finawin, you shouldn't be offended I call you a racist, right? Tags are just tags after all...

And, just to clarify, the arguments I am referring to are the "I don't think all X people are Y, but I sure think Y people are Y. Hell, I even like some of them!" You know what words to fill in the blanks.

Hold on a second.
How in the flying fuck did I get lumped into being a racist just because I said it's fucking stupid that a WHITE MIDDLE CLASS CANADIAN MAN is crying about racism that doesn't affect him? (At every-single-given-chance possible, I may add)
This stemmed from a fucking movie.
If you're crying about a nonexistent racist agenda, from a movie made based on a comic, which is based roughly on a historical event, you should swallow a cyanide laced cock missile and choke on it during your crying.

I admit I lumped (as an aside, your using the term "lumped" caused me to chuckle) you in this because I didn't want to single out a single poster, but I think your posting history warrants it. Make it easy on me, say that you don't call all of X group Y, but only those who 'deserve' it. Come on, you agree with that, right?
Or, maybe you can call me a Z, because I refuse to write out the terms that you love to type? Oh, right, you only type it because you want to rile up the 'liberals' on the board. You don't actually mean it, right? I mean, it's just a word. Right?

Your whole assumption is ridiculous.
Throwing "racist" around is almost an art form these days.

Unfortunately, in America race and religion do have a bearing on things, and all of us have at least a few preconceived notions.
I wouldn't call anyone here overtly bigoted, but I do believe many people are insulated and do not have a ton of exposure into the big picture and see things from a limited perspective. This includes people on both sides of this discussion.
I do believe we have a ways to go to ensure that true equality exists in America. This will be accomplished not when race is ignored, but when it has zero bearing on anything personally, professionally, or via opportunity. Anyone can see this is not the case today, although we have made much progress.
Interestingly enough, some supposedly trying to counteract hate and ignorance in this thread are doing so... often... by flaming and making angry proclamations.

This was clearly aimed at me but if you go back and read my posts, I've been quite a bit more respectful than my critics have been.

Actually, it wasn't. You have really have been overtly civil in this thread, even when being personally attacked at times.
Race is a catch 22 in America. There is some resentment because often it is perceived people are given more opportunities due to their race, and because of the poorly portrayed media based stereotypes of race.
The problem is if one looks at crime, unemployment, welfare, and single family statistics, then it's apparent that affirmative action isn't doing the job, and in some ways there is a downward trend in the black community. Thus, the opposite is true that we aren't doing ENOUGH!
This isn't historical or bias, as others who come here with nothing and end up well off from Asia, Africa, and other continents can attest, but a cultural and inner city issue of America in some regards.
To be perfectly honest it offends me when someone says the N word. Whatever variant. It also irks me when people use slurs, but at the same time, I don't want to lump someone as racist due to their using terms that are unfortunately very common and not frowned upon. I also am against overt censorship here, since people should speak how they like, even if it's not how I would.
That doesn't change the fact it's often seen on NT that those who are supposedly so against hateful speech seem to do a lot of using it themselves.

ya, it's a big problem but it's also a massive potential pitfall to have too much government intervention, you can easily create a group of people who not only depend on public funding but start to feel they are entitled to it.
It's a major problem with natives in Canada, it's a really bad situation and you want to help things but throwing money, and other government assistance is currently not working. The two easy answers are throw more money at it and hope, or cut the money off and hope there is a substantial change in the mindset of the affected people. Either way there really isn't any kind of an easy clear cut solution.

We should completely cut off welfare. Maybe that will get them off their asses.

How about turning it into a full time job meaning you have to do a full 8 hours work as if you had a real job? there is alot in this country that needs cleaning up and fixing..

I don't hate the idea, but there are problems with it. For one thing, you'd have to up the rate so you'd actually be spending more money.

Welfare has already been pretty much gutted. Getting rid of it completely gives us 10 million more homeless families, including a lot of kids that the state will have to take care of.
The problem isn't the current generation of people on welfare, in my opinion. The problem is the ghetto culture that for some reason is still thriving, and with it the bad racial stereotypes. What is the fix for this?
