Hmm.... I know I said I would give this game a try, I haven't gotten around to it yet. But a question arises in my mind....
My initial thought was that this game would be better served played on a PS3 with a controller.
For those that play it on a PC, is it equally satisfying/easy to use keyboard controls/etc.?
For as difficult as this game sounds, I was thinking my best chance of doing anything remotely approaching competent gameplay would be with a controller and not a mouse/keyboard.

For like the 5th time in this thread. Do NOT play this game with a keyboard/mouse. If you're getting the PC version, get yourself an Xbox 360 controller or just get the console version of the game.
All other games suck.

In a lot of ways this game is what i was waiting for after everquest. The learning curve made EQ fun (for me) the same way this one does. And all the cool obscure lore that's there if you choose to care about it
Can't recommend this game enough
There is a huge hump to get over (first bell) and then everything starts developing and you really get a good idea what it's about. If you don't like it at first, stick with it. Swear to god everyone on this forum would enjoy this game

I'm going a Faith/Str build, but I love Quelaag's Furysword. I think I'll make my Mage more of an Int/Dex hybrid.
I was diehard Keyboard/mouse but I just can't use it with this game. I tried initially and even with the fix it still is far inferior to a controller. The game is built with a controller in mind and shines with it.
I've got to admit anytime I'm human I summon or allow myself to be summoned now, just for the fun of wtfpwning ganktards. I really wish this game had a dedicated 'group' option. It's a shame they don't put a real coop mode in DS2.

I hated the move set of Quelaags fury sword but it was very late in the game before any other weapon came close to it in dmg. I'd always have to switch to it for hard bosses.

Pretty sure they've said they'll have a more traditional co-op mode with dedicated servers for DS2
Too bad you guys dont play on 360. I'd get back in to this game to engage in jolly cooperation

Lyion, you only have to be human to summon someone else in to your game. You can put your summon stone down at any time. Killing bosses in coop is the best way to farm souls.

Ah, excellent. thanks.
On a side note, GFWL really is the suck. my kid can't use Live on the 360 when I am on DS on my PC because the account is the same.

I suck.
I picked it up Saturday night, made a couple of characters, played them through the first (tutorial) bits, past the first boss, into the Undead Burg (cleared?) and brief excursions into tougher areas, leveled from 4 to 10, etc. The combat is fun enough, some interesting touches, pretty scenery/gfx, but I'm just not being drawn into the story. I don't feel much, if any, connection to the character, or much impetus to go further. I don't really feel the desire to explore, which is a major driving factor for me in other games, I'm not sure why this one is different in that regard. I don't know what else to say, I guess the random factors did not align for me on this one.
I can hold onto it a bit longer, maybe give it another go, but my first impression is simply that there isn't enough that is particularly interesting to me.
To be fair, all of my experience is solo, I can see how the gameplay might appeal more playing with a friend.
I have it for the PS3.

my PS3 fried last year and i'm in that weird "do i buy a used PS3 or do i just wait it out and get a PS4" limbo
so it's PC or nothin

Keep playing. Characters start at lvl 5ish. I can get to level 10 in 30 minutes
As far as story, it's simple. Kill the bad guy that ruined everything. As far as lore? Deep as the ocean, which incites the exploration
Like i've said over and over, the game doesnt really start until you've rang both bells and get to anor lando. Which is many many hours fown the road if you choose to keep playing. This is a game where you get out of it what you put in. I set it down for six months when i was only to undead burg with a lvl 10 or 15 dude just like you because i thought it was repetitive and stupid and uninvolving. Oh how wrong i was when i found myself up at 3am reading strats and lore info every day. I enjoyed this more than any other rpg except everquest by the time i was done

this sat on my puter for a couple weeks until i finally broke down and traded my (useless) PS3 controllers in for a wired USB xbox360 controller and fired it up tonight
kinda disappointed in the textures, esp since i am running it in 1080p on my 50" plasma
picked a knight, really no idea wtf i'm doing yet. fistpumped when i iced the crypt demon on like the 15th try. chose to go up for starters, really big dude in a tunnel kept pwning me, so i went a different direction. finally got to the taurus demon, got blasted in the anus, called it a night
good game so far, but what do i need to know? i'm not talking boss strats, just general game pointers

Best tip is learn from your mistakes. All enemies can be beat without getting hit with enough strategy. It's best to only attack a hard enemies right after he's attacked and your dodged his attack. Attacking him at random times will usually result in you getting hit at the same time and dying. Attacking enemies in the back is a good strat. Dodge/roll until you get in the back and attack. I like light fighter builds (1/3 weight I think), but thats just me. Stam is very important for melee heavy builds. You need it to both block and attack. It will save your life.
Weapons are complicated. You need to decide what kind of weapon you want. Dex is good for rapiers, daggers, bows and curved weapons (light katanas). Str is good for heavy weapons and fist weapons. Basically the better the letter in the given stat the highter your bonus will be from having a high stat in that (S>A>B>C>D>E). So if you have a weapon with a D in FAITH and A in DEX, a high DEX build will get a large bonus. You will also get a small damage bonus from your faith. Usually Faith and Int damage bonus are confured in magic dmg (which is useful against high armor enemies and less good against high magic resistance enemies). All weapons also have min requirements. You can equip them while under the min requirements but it's not recommended. It's will make you crappy. Best way to choose a good weapon at first is just try out the move set. If you're a knight I think you start with a longsword? That's a pretty good started weapon.

i think the ninja gaiden reboot was the last time i played a game that demanded this level of proficiency with combat mechanics

Ninja Gaiden was cheap and required button mashing. This game rewards you for learning to play better.

There is a 3rd party patch that really improves the visuals in the game.

i disagree. i found that the NG reboot series (were those PS3 exclusives? i don't remember) actually punished you for buttonmashing. you had to learn all the right defenses, evades, and countermoves or you wouldn't make it more than halfway through the game.
got a link for that prettification mod?

Ninja Gaiden black / sigma 1 required you to learn to finish the game on Master Ninja. It was not button mashing. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 was a walk in the park. Very easy to finish with button mashing.
