Drunks are killing *THEMSELVES* and not other people. (barring drinking & driving, of course, and if you want to discuss cracking down on THAT, I'm right with you.) Can't you see the difference? If guns only allowed you to kill YOURSELF, we wouldn't be objecting to them.

Like I said: Give me a bottle of Bacardi, and I might kill myself with alcohol poisoning. Give me a gun with a full 30 round clip, and I can potentially kill 30 people. These are RADICALLY different things.

Assault weapons are designed, from the ground up, to KILL PEOPLE. Not just individual people, but large numbers of people in a short time. That is their entire purpose. Therefore, I simply do not feel that something with that as its purpose should be freely available, making it that much easier for someone to slaughter multiple other people. The same can be stated about extended magazines. Is it infringing on your rights to not let you have canisters of nerve gas, which is something else designed to kill large numbers of people in a short time? By your argument it is, which is patently ridiculous.

Alcohol, on the other hand, can have definite benefits. Look at the research about red wine helping to prevent heart disease, assuming it's used in moderation, just as one example. Nor was alcohol developed with the express intent of being able to kill many people at once. They are totally and completely unrelated concepts. Your argument is utterly invalid and completely unsupportable. You are comparing two things which are not comparable in this context. It saddens me that you can't see that, no matter how much we try and point it out to you.

Are you fucking kidding me about drunks only killing themselves unless they drink and drive?

Yea well guns only kill when used irresponsibly too and I repeat Booze kills way more people and what purpose does it serve ??????????

Alcohol has a few benefits does that justify the absolute carnage that it brings with it.

Also dont you fucking dare tell me that booze only affects its user. People get killed by them all the time, also just like every person shot doesnt die neither does everyone who has a run in with an alcohol abuser.

You can get your anti oxidents somewhere besides wine , but if you want to go down that road than wines fine but what medical purpose does everclear serve ?

You are full of shit arlos. Alcohol is one of the most dangerous things in our country that serves no purpose but we allow it and its a huge part of our culture.

Guns arent any more dangerous than anything else were allowed to have in our free country you just dont like them and thats what this boils down to. Your in way more danger from many other things and I dont hear a peep so when it comes to guns why dont you guys just keep your mouth shut. Your not concerned about a safer society guns just make you feel icky. If youw ant to end needless death in america let the crusade begin or shut your double standard loving mouth.

Im gettin all mad and shit I need to go settle down

i think another important fact to remember is that this isn't a new thing. it isn't uniquely american. it didn't just start happening with kent state or thurston. between 1900 and 1999 there were 909 incidents of mass murder (4 or more people dead in a short period of time) in america alone. these include incidents as varied as a grandpa opening up on a playground with a shotgun to kids (that are now out of jail afaik) that pulled a fire alarm at their school and ran out to the woods and opened fire on everyone. this kind of shit happens all the time. 1929 is still the peak of mass shootings as far as history is concerned. there is no pattern, there is no increase.

and apparently we seem to learn nothing. ever. when the media decides to latch on to one of these instead of ignore it they spark an instant country-wide debate that makes a bunch of people hate each other and nothing ever comes from it. it's happened every time since charles whitman climbed that tower at texas university in 66.

and how many don't even get mentioned? what about the 41yo vietnamese dude that opened fire at an immigrant school and killed 11? what about the dude in scotland that killed 16 kindergartners and their teacher? what about the kid in finland that posted his plans on youtube then went and killed his classmates? what about the dude in azerbaijan that killed 10 and burned their bodies? what about the guy in norway that killed 77 with bombs? what about the guy earlier this year that opened fire in a nursing classroom in oakland and killed 7?

right after that press release from the head of the NRA the other day, reports came in that someone in pennsylvania went on a rampage and killed two cops

i think the earliest recorded case of a mass school shooting was in 1764 when some lenape indians walked into a school in pennsylvania and killed 10.... with muskets and shit

tl;dr nothing's gonna change. y'all are wasting your time!

I will say that I really wish they would stop giving these shooters that kind of press, I think our media is very guilty in encouraging this kind of shit.

Ya know id be willing to try a one year gun ban to prove a point. Its not the weapons americans are a rowdy bunch when compared to the rest of the world and I think we always have been.

Our whole history is based of violence and were always at war and I think that has a lot to do with who we are as a people.

America keeping shit real since 1776 if ya know what im saying.

Its not like the cops can bust me for weed or possession of a gun ( only 2 things ive ever really been worried bout getting arrested for so bring em on.

Nothing would thrill me more than getting stopped by a cop and then them giving me my bag back. I dont think that could ever get old.

WEBSTER, N.Y. -- A gunman ambushed four volunteer firefighters responding to an intense pre-dawn house fire Monday morning outside Rochester, N.Y., killing two before ending up dead himself, authorities said. Police used an armored vehicle to evacuate more than 30 nearby residents.

The gunman fired at the firefighters when they arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m. at the blaze near the Lake Ontario shore in Webster, town Police Chief Gerald Pickering said. The first Webster police officer who arrived chased the suspect and exchanged gunfire with him, authorities said.

"It does appear it was a trap" for the first responders to the fire, Pickering said at a news conference.

Authorities didn't say how the gunman died or whether anyone might have died in the fire itself.

One of the dead firefighters was also a town police lieutenant; it wasn't clear whether he returned fire. An off-duty police officer who was driving by was injured by shrapnel, Pickering said.

The fire started in one home and spread to two others and a car, officials said. The gunfire initially kept firefighters from battling the blazes. Police say four homes were destroyed and four damaged.

The West Webster Fire District learned of the fire early Monday after a report of a car and house on fire on Lake Road, on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario, Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn said.

The fire appeared from a distance as a pulsating ball of flame glowing against the early morning sky, flames licking into treetops and reflecting on the water, with huge bursts of smoke billowing away in a brisk wind.

Two of the firefighters arrived on a fire engine and two in their own vehicles, Pickering said. After the gunman fired, one of the wounded men managed to flee, but the other three couldn't because of flying gunfire.

A police armored vehicle was used to recover two of the men, and eventually it evacuated 33 people from nearby homes, the police chief said.

The dead men were identified as Police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, the Webster Police Department's public information officer; and Tomasz Kaczowka, also a 911 dispatcher, whose age was not released.

Pickering described Chiapperini as a "lifetime firefighter" with nearly 20 years with the department, and called Kaczowka a "tremendous young man."

The two wounded firefighters, Joseph Hofsetter and Theodore Scardino, were in guarded condition in the intensive care unit at Strong Memorial Hospital, authorities said. Both were awake and alert and are expected to recover.

Hofsetter, also a full-timer with the Rochester Fire Department, was hit once in the pelvis, and the bullet lodged in his spine, authorities said. Scardino was hit in the chest and knee.

Monday's shooting and fires were in a neighborhood of seasonal and year-round homes set close together across the road from the lakeshore. The area is popular with recreational boaters but is normally quiet this time of year.

"We have very few calls for service in that location," Pickering said. "Webster is a tremendous community. We are a safe community, and to have a tragedy befall us like this is just horrendous."

O'Flynn lamented the violence, which comes on the heels of other shootings including the massacre of 20 students and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

"It's sad to see that that this is becoming more commonplace in communities across the nation," O'Flynn said.

<sarcasm> Guess we need armed guards with police and firemen now?

And yes, I am sure that if that guy had been armed with a 5th of SoCo instead of a gun, he could have killed and wounded just as many people.... </sarcasm>

No but behind the wheel you can kill more than yourself. Its not as news worthy to get killed by a drunk but its way more of a real danger to you.

Maybe if we get rid of the right to bear arms no one will ever die needlessly again. You keep on being Scurred of guns arlos it makes it a lot harder to see other threats that are much more likely to happen to ya.

We let nuts dictate what our laws are way to much and im tired of it. Im not a criminal and im never going to give up my rights. 12 and 4 are all a big deal to me and ill never stop defending them regardless of what some pussies say on the internet or some nutters do. Im a big fan of freedom and find that i am willing to pay for it.

I believe every sane person should have the right to carry a gun and Yes I do believe that where you have multiple legal gun carriers your a lot likely to get smoked by a madman. People save lives with guns all the time its just a much harder statistic to keep track of. Also look what happens when you put your life in the hands of the cops .... You get smoked while waiting for help to arrive ..... No thank you id rather be active in trying to keep myself alive than waiting on help to come if ive got an option. Id rather teachers do something besides stand there with there dick in there hand when a shooter comes in to kill the children. Id rather firefighters do the same thing. SHoot back it makes a world of difference and 3 killed in crossfire beats 20 something any day of the week too no matter how cold that sounds.

Lets blame the guns and not the crazy people. That will fix it.

Kill someone with anything other than a gun and its all good but if a gun kills someone we need to change the laws and strip peoples rights away to fix it.

You still an alright dude arlos but your never going to back me down or change my mind

Ps oh my god all these guns and bullets in my house how am I ever going to stay sane and not kill anyone :2m16:

You will note that I specifically noted that driving while drinking is a horrible thing, deserves to be punished, and we're probably still being too lenient on it, yes? I am HARDLY ignoring that eventuality. Barring driving while intoxicated, however, giving me a bottle of Stoli does not immediately make me a threat to large numbers of people. Giving me a gun with a full 30 round clip DOES. That's the difference.

You will also note that I have repeatedly said that I have no issue with hunting rifles or standard shotguns. Hell, I owned and kept a pump action 12 gauge around in my apartment for years, and went shooting with it on occasion. (I went to college in a rural area of Eastern Washington state, where local farmers didn't mind if you went shooting on their land, so long as you policed your shells and were careful about what was downrange. Several friends had handguns, and we'd take a couple sheets of plywood, paper targets, and set them up near the base of a hill to use as a backstop, and go shooting.) My dad used to go deer and duck hunting when he was younger. I never went because I had no interest, but I was taught how to treat guns when I was young, and took shooting classes while I was in the Boy Scouts. So my position is not in any way based on some random fear of firearms, or unfamiliarity with them. Just wanted make that clear, since you seemed to be unaware of my background in this.

So, DESPITE that background, I am still dead set against assault weapons in the hands of civilians, and for anyone outside the military having access to extended magazine clips or (even worse) large drum magazines. I am also dead set against concealed carry of handguns. Not a big fan of them in any context, but I can accept them being kept at home or used at a firing range. Hell, I even have no problem against people owning assault weapons, large magazines, or even automatic weapons if they only allowed to be kept *AT* a range. No taking them home, no taking them on the street, strictly at a range, but if you do that, I don't care what kind of weapon it is, so long as it's somewhat smaller than a bazooka. Its when those more military style weapons are allowed to be taken into a context where they can be used against the rest of people in society that I have the issue.

Ill repeat this for you one more time because you odnt seem to be understanding me. Look up how many people die a day due to booze. Now do it with assault rifles. Do the 2 numbers you got not show you why I think your lets protect the children has a bit of a hollow ring to it ? I know that booze has a harder time killing 20 people at a time but slow and steady wins the race. As you are aware your much more likely to get fucked up for life by a drunk than a black rifle so why does the one scare you soooooooooooooo much more?

I dont give a shit if you like hunting weapons or not as those are not the guns I own or the ones that need to be defended. Im for well i guess youd call it an assault rifle but id call it a sporting rifle handguns and conceal and carry /open carry laws .... anything short of that ill never agree with you. Ever. I spend every day with a gun on my hip and several others close by and they have yet to harm me or anyone else so I refuse to believe that the guns themselves are the problem.

Also dont come at me with that guns are too easy to access bullshit either. For the law abiding citizen there are all sorts of hoops to jump through people to talk to and places to be and forms to fill out. I know that every year the legal side of the coin gets a few abad apples that do a few very bad things but overall most legal gun owners are law abiding citizens. Now lets look at the criminal side of things. It is a whole hell of a lot easier to buy one off the street than it is to buy one from a shop. Theres no background check no fingerprints no questions no waiting period no talking to the cops to register it and if you think for a second that the streets arent full of guns I suggest you head on over to your nearest ghetto and do a quick fact check. Those guns after a gun ban will still be out there as well as new ones smuggled in. If you dont think guns can get in I suggest you try to buy some coke and tell me how long it took to make a connection.

Bad guys and criminals are going to do bad guy shit. We will never be able to stop them so instead we should try to take measures to stop them. Have people always be on the lookout for someone acting strange, teach people to fight back , and lets seriously defend our schools because that seems to be the target of choice for madmen. Have teachers and students drill on what to do. Have a few armed folks around im not saying it has to be a cop or a teacher with a cpl. Have folks get some training if they want it so that there are more options than standing there with your dick in your hand waiting on POlice to arive. We train for fires which havent killed a student in years. We have equipment in place for fires even though it doesnt get used. Until a greater solution can be reached one way or another steps need to be taken RIGHT NOW to make sure that this doesnt happen any more. Children are unable to defend themselves and thus need to be defended. WHo is going to defend them? I can tell you for a fact that if guns were banned tomorrow or even if they never existed with our current media culture these people would find a way to take thier hatred and phycosis out on the rest of us one way or another. That is a fact that you cannot dispute. How do we stop crazy people from spree killing still remains a question with no answer.

Oh and mr pro shotgun in a lot of ways you should be glad that old dude didnt walk in there with one of those as he had all the time in the world to reload and that would have made for a much more gruesome scene. A gun is a gun is a gun and i firmly believe that as long as we make this peices of shit celebrities well continue to see this shit be it a gun a bow or a fucking bomb. What we need to focus on is getting insane fuckers the help they need before they snap, and making damn sure that there names dont go down in history.

Also it gets a lot of hype but assault rifles really arent the main killers at all. Look up assault rifle deaths a year and get back to me..... Or better yet lets just drop it for something a little more festive as were just annoying each other and not changing minds.

I think there are way more dangerous things out there and if we want to reduce death we start there. I think the second amendment helps keep a government honest and a citizenry law abiding. I will never ever sign on for less rights regardless of how emotional an issue becomes.

I worry every day my boo goes to school to teach the little monsters. i worry every day that the little monsters i play playstation with and teach how to wrestle will in general look out for might get smoked but I dont think the answer for them or a better society lies in disarming the public. Im not arguing with you for fun arlos im arguing with you because I absolutely believe you are wrong.Im not being selfish its not just my guns im worried about its everyone elses as well as future generations yet to buy them. I believe that the right to bears arms is worth almost any cost. I would like to see some changes in our gun policy but disarmament is not a change that is on that list. The right not to own the best fire arms out there is not something I think our country should ever negotiate on. Im sorry you and I dont agree. Im not pro child murder, or pro mugging or pro death in the slightest so dont get me wrong just dont agree with the " liberal" solution.

Im not a good person to have this talk with as I am not very flexible on the subject. I get angry when I feel like my guns are threatened. Once you get angry all civil discussion goes out the window.

Ill try to be civil and we can try to start over if you would like.

Its a very emotional issue on both sides but in order for anything to pass or be done people like you will have to work with people like me which is a bitch cuz neither of us wants to hear the other.I live in a place where I feel that a weapon that could in theory drop at least 4 without a reload seems like a good idea but I dont think that the guy killing those kids having those kinds of weapons is a good idea at all. I do not know how to make it so that folks like me can own our weapons and keep doing our thing while keeping them out of the hands of mad men. There are situations I am sure that if an armed person or 2 would have been there the outcome would have been different as well as situations where if a gun wasnt present perhaps lives could have been saved.
Trevan martin would prolly still be alive for example if he hadnt run across a guy with a pistol and a chip on his shoulder and on the flip side id prolly be dead at worst and no longer exactly as I am at best if i hadnt been carrying a few years back. Carrying and owning firearms is a serious responsibility that some folks can handle just fine and others cant. Lot like pitbulls and booze most people handle that shit just fine but in the hands of an idiot horrid things can happen.

I would like the questions they ask before you buy a gun of any type to be a little more intense. I would like to see gun shows closed cuz like Ive said that is a go to place for a lot of folks who shouldnt have weapons to get them and a lot of purchases arent tracked. I would also like to see long guns registered like hand guns. I dont think that s perfect but I guess we could see where we are at after that.

Also not perfect but i would like to see national healthcare and crazy folks have options with therapy. As it stands right now a lot of insurance will provide for the drugs but not the treatment to work through your issues.

Last but not least and although it doesnt have a lot to do with spree killers it does have a lot to do with gun violence and that is our war on drugs. That shit really needs to come to a screeching halt. I think that with drugs no longer in the hands of the black market that would clear up alot of disputes that end in murder as well as giving us a huge amount of leos that now need something to do. That something would be to protect our schools and our children the next time a nut with a gun shows up.

I dont think that my solution is perfect but I think it would be a starting point that we could tweak here and there to make sure it works. I dont think you can ever truly be rid of violence but I think those few suggestions might drastically drop the rates. I would also suggest full prohibition of liquor if history hadnt already shown that that doesnt work. I do think that americas alcohol culture does add to the violence that we see every year though. I think people should be encouraged not to drink just like they are encouraged not to smoke.

America is a violent country. Our home was forged by the gun, expanded by the gun and at times preserved by the gun. We go to war at the drop of a hat. The fact that we are a very violent people is why I do not believe a gun ban stands a chance at stopping violence as everyone will still have one.

Im going to try to leave this conversation now as its going nowhere but I wanted my ideas to get out there in a non hostile way as well as you liberals to see what your up against. Some of us with guns are willing to work with the other side as long as certain conditions are met and some are not willing to work with the other side at all. Chances are high that a weapon ban will not pass the vote and I dont want the democrats to get run out of washington dc again like they did after the 94 ban. The republican party is dangerous and id prefer not to give them an issue to rally the troops around so that they dont retake all of dc in the next few years.

Drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, all cool lol but kill infinitely more worldwide, but since they're your vice it's dandy. Hurrrrrrrrr

But people who think semi auto rifles are "assault rifles" want a ban on those, fucking rofl. Do you even know what an assault rifle is?

You don't even know what it is you're talking about. Literally never even seen a gun in your life I bet, hence the irrational fear and complete lack of knowledge on the very thing you're arguing over.

By the way, I've started my build of an AR-15 before knuckledragger politicians over the age of 60 make that difficult, as a law abiding citizen. I'll be sure to post pictures here of my boogeyman.

Please, tell me more how tobacco, alcohol, and drugs are less dangerous to the public.

out of curiosity, is there really any particular reason you feel you need an AR-15? or is it just the emo angsty teenage rager in you that wants to have one because you can? are you ever actually gonna use the damn thing? where? on what? for what? why?

It's versatile. I can hunt with it, protect my family in the event of a Katrina-like disaster, shooting for fun, keeping my skills sharp, etc.

There's dozens of reasons. It's no different than a shotgun. It has its purposes.

If he takes it to the range is he not using it ? If he hunts small game is he not using it. If he does comp shooting is he not using it? If he gets attacked by a roving band of hoodlums in the middle of the night is he not using it > if hes got it in a display rack is he not using it?

The reason we cant even have this debate is because the antis demand you explain why you wish to own something but if you bring up owning other dangerous things they say its not the same.

I want to own it cuz 1 I enjoy owning and collecting guns 2 I enjoy shooting guns, 3 i like having options in case shit ever does hit the fan in any way shape or form 4 I view it as an important right that is worth preserving 5 I cant see into the future and 6 I cant have a cop with me at all times. and 7 I see it as no more dangerous than owning or being around any of the other billion things that can kill you.8 I dont want the republicans to have a strong talking point come election time. 9 I believe that can save lives as easy as take them . I want to know why you think that we as gun owners owe you an explanation on our choices in weapons but every other vice gets a free pass and a feel that is kind of a valid question when it comes to asking me to give up a right I feel very strongly about.

well statistics say it'll be one of you, so better you than himself, right?

maybe then he'd get adopted by someone who isn't a racist piece of white trash with a gun-induced priapism and end up a decent person

you know, despite the genetic handicap he inherited when you slopped your mutant waste into that poor woman's unsuspecting womb

Yes every gun in every home kills some one who lives there sooner or later. Brinstar you really need to cool it dude. Ive tried to talk rational ideas with you and your really foaming at the mouth.

statistics show that violent crime has been decreasing for years. I know this is really upsetting when somthing like this happens but your not adding anything to the discussion other than rage at an inanimate object . Your really not helping.

Try this out pretend you and I are senators and in order for a bill about this to pass you and I must agree or were just going to cockblock each other and things wont change. What can we do to limit spree killing and violence in america without the nra or greenpeace voting us out of power.

I will never back down and im sure you will never back down and much like you and I this country is going to gridlock on this issue. What can we do in the meantime to prevent this from ever happening again ? I dont want to see dead children on tv ever again but i dont agree with you on how to accomplish that so realistically what do we as a country do about this ?

Last thing Harrison is probably a responsible gun owner so the chances of his kid having that accident are probably pretty rare.

As for if I had children I would probably keep my guns safe and as they grew up raise them with the same caution around guns , love for shooting , and the respect for the second amendment that I have. Ive been around and shot a lot of guns brinstar and im not a baby killer or a monster or any other such nonsense im just a regular guy who disagrees with you.

Dozens of real, attainable, logical approaches have been posted. He ignored them in a frothing rage, incapable of dealing with a point of view other than his own.

We haven't had a single death due to fire in a school in 50 years, but we don't protect or children from psychos equally as diligently? Disgusting oversight on our part.

oi fatty let me clarify something:

though spazz gets emotional, he also presents mostly cogent arguments and is actually in favor of many of the "gun control" laws i'd like to see implemented (yeah, that's what they are spazz, don't let the words "gun control" scare you unnecessarily). if more gun people were like spazz, we could work toward a solution that respects the rights of responsible gun owners while keeping firearms out of the hands of maniacs.

unfortunately, there are also redneck fuckwad gun owners like you out there, and though i'm not cynical enough to assume retards like you outnumber the good ones, you certainly do out-bluster them. case in point: you have done nothing in this thread but swing your micropenis around with pathetic wannabe army swagger (that no one buys btw), offer ridiculous hypotheticals, draw idiotic conclusions, ignore any sort of responsible discussion prompts, and arrogantly presume way too much about everyone here.

in other words: spazz and i disagree, but you are a stupid bitch cunt. shut your fat fucking bitch mouth and stop hurting your own cause.

You're raging pretty hard, kid.

I think the only one here with a problem is you. Your falsely assumed intellectual superiority is laughable. You are calling for a ban on something you know nothing about, but have no problem with far more deadly things. Your boogeyman isn't real.

You're irrational, lashing out like a child, because you can't handle a differing opinion.

Again ignoring solutions, or attempts at them, because you're butthurt about something.

Except that armed guards at schools isn't a solution. I posted why it's not, but you ignored that.

You also missed the point of Gyps' question: Why do you need an AR-15 SPECIFICALLY, as opposed to some other rifle, like the following: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/prod ... s_id/97077 which is still a semi-auto, but is in an actual hunting caliber, and wouldn't fit anyone's definition of being an assault weapon, especially since it's only got a capacity of 4+1. What does the fact that it is an AR-15 give you that you wouldn't get from something like that Remington? The only difference *I* see is that the AR-15 is better at killing PEOPLE, but hey, I am certainly no expert. (Though if you read some of my replies to Spazz, you'll see that by no means am I completely inexperienced with firearms.)

Oh, and Spazz, check the statistics. The odds of a gun being kept at home injuring it's owner or someone in their household is VASTLY higher than the odds of it ever being used to harm an intruder of some kind. Now, one area we do apparently agree on (which I am glad to see) is on closing the gun show loophole for buying firearms. There's no reason why one way of buying a gun should skip all the usual background checks that normal methods do. If all that comes out of this current gun control debate is closing that loophole, I will still be pretty happy.
