Most companies insuring a single 19 year old male will put exclusions on their policy. It normally will list certain people who are not covered, and it’s very common to exclude anyone under the age of 25. Just having base insurance doesn’t mean you're insured to be driving any car.

Insurance in Florida works differently then. Here, the car is insured and the premium rate is determined by a number of factors (mostly # of drivers and their statistics). If you have insurance for a car, any licensed driver is covered by it. Your insurance will follow you around so if you drive someone else's car and they are not insured, you are usually covered as well. However, that will not get you out of a ticket here as proof of coverage must be carried in the vehicle.

I can do you one better Darc, I moved from Lousyana to Texass and kept my insurance up to date, when I swapped over the registration from LA to TX I changed insurance jsut like I was supposed to. Then when I moved back to LA I found a $500 fine waiting for me. Why you may ask? because I had insurance in LA one year, surely I needed LA insurance the next year.....because no one ever leaves the state and insures outside of LA...

Worst part is that there wasnt a damn thing I could do about it, I happened to have the ID cards from the switch over showing that I had insurance in TX at the time they said I was uninsured and they still would not let me renew my license, or my registration unless I paid the fine....

It works differently in different states. Unless I am mistaken, in Texas the insurance covers the owner of the vehicle and anyone else listed as a driver of that vehicle, and no one else. I recall very specifically that I was not allowed to drive my ex home in his vehicle because I was not listed on his insurance as a driver of his vehicle, and therefore, should I have gotten into an accident, there would be no insurance coverage for the accident, even if I had my own insurance for another vehicle as it did not cover me in someone else's vehicle.

Completely different than here in Nevada or in Minnesota where the insurance covers the vehicle regardless of who is driving it, much as you described like in Florida.

Insurance regulations are very specific in Texas.

Wow, that sucks and all. I've got a lovely DMV/Secretary of State experience. When I moved to Illinois I brought my leased truck with me. In virtually every state you pay sales tax based on your "usage" of the vehicle. If you lease a 30k vehicle for 15k over 3 years, you pay sales/use tax on 15k. Well, when I went to transfer the title on it from the old state to the new state (to get new plates basically), they demanded I pay sales tax on the entire vehicle less the amount of tax I'd already paid and a trivial depreciation. And even more exciting, the tax rate is higher in this lovely state. Talk about screwed. And just to add insult to injury, I was told that should I feel like buying the lease out at the end, I would get to pay sales tax on that transfer also, even though I'd already paid full sales tax on the car as if I owned it.

That, and though you have 90 days to apply for new title when you move, you only have 60 days to pay excess taxes so they almost nailed me for it, but the clerk leisurely mentioned that it was a shame the move-date I wrote wasn't 1 month later and then stepped back from the counter for a minute

I like Texas, just moved here about a year ago and no complaints!

I've lived here for 22 years and my only real complaint is its too hot in the summer. Oh, other real complaint is the 635/75 neverending construction.

I got a parking ticket Friday night because I stayed too long in the city parking gargage. Should I pay $25 or ignore it?
