Actually the NFL players tried this in the early 80s but the owners slammed down on them when they brought in replacement players. The owners didnt lose any revenues and the ratings didnt go down the toilet so the players' association caved. Since then all the contracts negotiation between the players and the league have went smoothly.
Yep, there've been seasons lost or shortened due to monetary issues in every American sporting league except for the NHL. Those guys are so modest and down to earth that they'd never throw away a season over filthy lucre. They just wanna play!

Im sorry, would 350 lbs be more accurate? Those athletic gods with their guts hanging out of their jerseys, THE pinnacle of physical fitness. Buncha big slobs grabbin onto eachother and 'blocking' while the little fast niggas go tearin ass up the field with the ball, whooooo how exciting. Only players on the team with any legitimate skill is the quarter back, and wide reciever.
If you want an athlete, take a look at an NHL defensemen who plays 30 minutes a game, 82 times a season. But I guess that guy couldnt possibly compete in the oh so demanding 16? game schedule of the NFL.
There has to be more plays in football. Twice as many players on the field, with a much larger playing field. To say its any more 'tactical' or any more strategy is involved over ANY other sport is ridiculous.

In Cat Crew terms. Hockey vs Football

I agree with some of that, Football has become a bunch of position players that are often physically formed so specifically to the character of their position that they look like freaks of nature...
but i still would rather watch college or pro football than any other sport, besides European Club Soccer....

Thats basketball, dude. Where someone 6'5 is considered short. Football has a position for people of any size. However, the NFL is the top of the world and requires one to be the best at their position.
In regards to tactics in Hockey and Football, I'll let Xao argue with you about that. It's pretty apparent Football is so much more in depth than Hockey, that it's like comparing modern warfare to backgammon.

How the fuck is football more in depth than hockey ?

You claimed to have played the sport, so I dont know why you would even try to argue against the strats and tactics of hockey. In football your coach tells you exactly what play to run, and thats that. In hockey the coach will tell what he expects, and its up to the players to communicate and adapt to the defense to get it done. Yeah, no strategy or any tactics involved there.

Or, is it because football is over reffed, over fined, over nicified in a strained attempt to make the vast majority of the players not bring their thug life out on the field? The only thing keeping a Ron Artest like appearance a weekly occurance on the football field is an 8 foot wall.
And Spliffs, requires too much? How does NASCAR fit into that tidy little piece? Lots of kids stock car racing in high school these days?
Everyone at my school played hockey. The only thing 'required' is 4 months of ice, and the only thing limiting that is location.
NASCAR isn't a sport. It's an abomination. I don't know how anyone could watch that shit. Kind of like hockey. They are similiar!
However, at least most people can relate to NASCAR, because they have actually driven. Most people havn't actually played hockey.
Also, your last sentence makes my point... most places in the US don't get 4 months of ice. Most places don't get ice you could feel comfortable skating on, ever. The only places that do, are practically in Canada. Everyone else has to make a trip to the ice arena. Hockey is not easily accessible, therefore, it will always be the red headed step child of pro sports.
Just admit it, hockey is shit, and should be done away with. Then we could use all the ice for curling!

It is, at this point, apparent that you don't know anything about football. I can appreciate the desire to defend your sport against all comers, but you should at least make an effort to learn a little bit about other sports before denigrating them. As it is, you're making a Mindia-esque argument here.
Without even approaching the traditional skill positions that you neglected to mention (DB, RB, TE, etc), line play alone requires far more skill and athletic ability than you credit them with.
If we're just considering minutes played, then clearly hockey players are vastly inferior to baseball players, who play longer games, nearly twice as often. Keep in mind, I'm not making this argument, it's just the logical corollary to yours regarding football and hockey players.
Your grasp of football playcalling is horrendous. I don't suppose you can explain the concept of a Cover-2 or even what a two-gap responsibility is without google, can you? Those are considered some of the simplest techniques employed in the game.
For the record, even 350 pounds is considered large in the NFL.

So explain to me where im wrong. Im no football fan, I hate the sport. To me, its mind numbing. On the line its a bunch of fat fucks that run into eachother, grab up on eachother, and push eachother around. All while either attempting to get at the QB, or RB, or trying to stop the fat fucks on the other team from getting at your QB or RB. Pretty in-depth sport ya got there. The only exciting football player ive ever seen in my lifetime was Barry Sanders.

Im not talking only "minutes played", im talking time actually spent playing. In hockey, if youre on the ice, youre playing. Not standing around, not picking your ass in the outfield waiting for some action. Not standing on the fringe of the play grabbing onto some other fat sack of shit while the action goes by and you lay on the field with 3 other dudes that had no other purpose than to run into eachother so the QB could an extra second, or so the RB could take a quick left.

How exactly is my grasp on play calling horrendous? Does the the coach not dictate every single play thats made? and no, I cant explain the concept of a Cover-2 or what a two-gap responsibility is. I gave up on football in the peewee leagues when I was about 6.

I literally can't explain where you're wrong without the facile "everywhere". There's just no basic foundation to work from, given how little you know about football. I can talk about linebacker responsibilities in a Belicheck defense, or Manning's playcalling, or the Colts' executing play action, but it won't actually mean anything to you.

Actually, you were talking precisely about minutes played: "If you want an athlete, take a look at an NHL defensemen who plays 30 minutes a game, 82 times a season". If you want to consider the quality of the action, the hockey player never has a 230 pound man who runs a 4.8 40 meters and benches 400+ pounds trying to violently stop him.
How exactly is my grasp on play calling horrendous? Does the the coach not dictate every single play thats made?
No, they don't, and they certaintly can't account for the onfield interaction between a called play and the opposing response. That's like saying that field grade officers and NCOs in the military don't employ tactics because general officers dictate every operation.
and no, I cant explain the concept of a Cover-2 or what a two-gap responsibility is. I gave up on football in the peewee leagues when I was about 6.
So essentially, you're saying that football has no tactics, but you can't actually describe some of the simplest tactics in the game? At that point, you may want to consider learning about the game before talking about it.

apparently you have never seen an open ice check, with two players moving faster than any football player will ever run. there are pleanty of big boys playing hockey who push 230+ and can bench just as much as a football player. they are professional athletes after all, strength and agility are just as, if not more important for a hockey player.

I said its ridiculous to say football is any more in-depth, tactical, or strategic than any other sport. It isnt.

But you admit you have no clue about football, and say this. I've been watching Hockey since I was a kid, and was a Hartford Whalers fan. I've been to many Dallas Stars games in the 90s before moving to Ohio, also.
Football is so much more in depth, tactical and strategic than any other sport, it's not even funny. Football is a strategic game. Hockey is not, it's more of a reaction game. Xao just barely touched the outer ring of football, and you trying to compare cover 2 Ds with checking so kills your point, it's not even funny.

checking isnt comparable to a tackle? and i dont know what im talkin about? haha

im beginning to think you never played the game of hockey homie.
i know enough about football to know its a fuckin joke. the only reason it appeals to people is because they have no attention span, the plays last 3 seconds and you get a fuck ton of commercial breaks to keep the mindless masses amused.
the season is pathetically short, and the playoffs only prove who was having the better day. yet the "athletes" that play make it so gruelling you couldnt have a longer season because the entire team would be out with stupid injuries by the 20th game, and a best of 3 or more playoff round is out of question for the same reason. the whole sport sucks.
just because you have a playbook with 100+ plays, but only use 5 of them doesnt mean its some strategic chess game played on a field with real people. you can 1) run the ball, 2) throw the ball, and 3) stop the other team from running or throwing the ball. amazingly in-depth, blows every other sport out there straight out the fuckin atmosphere.

Checking is compared to tackling.
Cover 2 is a defensive scheme employed before the ball is even snapped. I shouldn't be having this discussion with you, because you have absolutely zero football knowledge.

i watch the lions, i see the same plays over and over again. the other teams do the same shit over and over as well, maybe thats cause theyre playing the lions... or maybe its because football isnt quite the game you guys think it is.

I can't really explain the entire game, but I suggest as a good precursor, you sit down and play EA Hockey and EA Madden 06 and come back after mastery of both and we'll resume this discussion. On the harder setting for both.

Tuggan, I think the gist of your arguement is "Hockey is cool cause I said so, and football sucks cause I said so"
Which is ok - I sometimes employ similiar tactics, but you should at least have the stones to admit that your arguement has no merit.

haha, i didnt think any of you went into the discussion thinking i knew anything about football.
it does indeed suck though. a very sad excuse for a professional sport, the playoff thing really pisses me off. 1 game decides it all, thats rubbish.

It makes it much more dramatic. That's why the superbowl is always the most watched televised event of the year. That's why the commercials are so good, because the big corporations know everyone is glued to their TV's to watch it all play out. It's actually one of the biggest appeals of football, *every* game is meaningful to your season and your hopes for a championship.
None of the other big sports can say that.
