So, despite giving away IIS and pushing it haughtily on to their partners, MS still is completely pwned by Apache, which runs on Sun/Linux primarily. Again, this was MS breakthrough app they were going to push everywhere.

So much for them and servers. Also, more and more companies are adopting Linux, especially as IBM pushes it.

Not to bump this but Tikker, while AIX, HPUX, etc own in the ERP realm, they do not own in the file and print side nor the terminal services side (no I'm not talking irma cards, cross talk,SNA, AS400 emu, etc crap either).

So while you can have your HP superdom with RAC running on a box or three, typically if the nix side outnumbers the wintel side, i'd say you have shit hardware.

Another problem with windows is premise of isolation of services, you know, need a box for every "software" you need to run. They have only begun IMHO the server consolidation market (see e.g. MSVS).

A taste of what I'm talking about is any of what were the big three, wintell WAY outnumber nix, let alone all the tier 1 2 3 suppliers I've worked at under contract.

One local datacenter in MI for ford had 3 racks of Dell 1u servers for there term emu farm, they had 1 rack for erp and another for emc. I think you've been in too many DCs that have shitty hardware.

EDIT, i wanted to clarify that in many DC's if it wasn't wintel it was novtel having the large majority.

Also, jobs is a dickhead, talk to some of the folks that work for apple. I know years ago he ran that ship so tight folks used to hate it there. Didn't he coin the phrase, my way or the highway? LOL

I dunno, maybe it's different in every single data centre I've seen, but i've never seen windows servers occupy even 25% of the bays

The only reason I would ever use Windows on a server is because I'm a unix noob for the most part.

I never said windows is a good db platform.

I said a good db platform is not generally huge numbers of servers but maybe 4-8 "super servers" with 16procs, EMC disk farms, etc etc.

If you have a DC with 40DB servers running some flavor of NIX, I can almost promise that hardware is antiquated at best (aka shit hardware).

In every DC i've have long contracts with, there is almost always the overrideing theme to reduce DB servers to 3-4 while the windows proliferates because it is "cheap and easy".

But to agree with you on a point, I've never seen any decent sized org. run DB's on anything other then HPUX-Oracle, AIX-DB2, etc. SQL is good for some stuff but SQL has never been bread and butter with MS (IMHO it still has some way to go there).
