Date a guy with a big dick and a 5 speed. That's how I learned. He would drive and I would move his cock the same way he mvoed the shifter. I miss high school.

Driving a stick isn't something you can really 'be taught' imo - it's something you have to do - someone can tell you what to do til the cows come home, but that doesn't accomplish anything. I learned when I was 16, and whenever my mom was in the car actually trying to tell me how to do it I got agitated and frustrated more than anything.. you will stall out when you're learning, period - it took me about 2 days to get the hang of it. After that it was about a full week before the rare stalling out went to 0

PS, I always park my tacoma in neutral.

actually the only one of my friends with a stick shift is my roommate krystal. she always says she's going to teach me but never does. i've done it before but it was only a day or two and i don't think i'd remember much of it now since it was about four years ago..

But wouldn't that teach you to shift left handed when in all reality (unless you are Mr Burns from the Simpsons) people shift with their right hands?

Ask for your roommates car and try to go to one end of the block and back. I mean, you arent going very fast or far so you cant fuck the car over TOO bad, can you? I've been tempted to do that with Gids car while he takes a nap. I hate people watching me fail. And then one day I will be like, ok lets go to the mall parking lot so you can teach me, and I'll be all like VROOOOOM when we get there and he will call me a prodigy. But he can read this so my plan is ruined.

I have an automatic now (the first I've ever owned), got sick of the standard. It's nice to have a free hand now - drinking coffee, changing CD's, rubbing one off, whatever I need to do...

My parents played the cruel joke on me of not having an automatic car at the house for me to learn on, 5 cars, all manual.

I drove a manual once in my life. The entire time I felt like I had no control of the car. I've been driving manual since I learned to drive.

I drove a manual in the U.S. once (right hand shifting compared to left hand which I'm used to). It wasn't as big of a change as I thought it would be. I felt a lot more comfortable shifting with my right hand for the first time than I did driving an automatic for the first time. Manual FTW!

If for some reason you don't use your parking brake (or the cable snaps etc) don't put the transmission in anything but 1st or Reverse. The other gears are high enough that on an incline of varying degree the wheels will have mechanical advantage over the compression of the engine, allowing your shit to roll away.

Learned on a manual escort. Current car is a 6 speed manual. Will never go back to an automatic. Unless I become disabled or somethin. Or maybe one of those new DSG transmissions that VW/audi uses. Takes practice, but once you can drive stick without thinking about what youre doing its great. Love it for all the inclines here in SLC. Need more power? Downshift boom power.

Learning to drive a manual is very easy, and usually just takes a few hours.

My first car, a toyota truck, was a 5 speed. I liked having a manual when I was young. When I moved to Dallas and started driving in city traffic daily, a manual just was not feasible.

The only manual I'll buy in the future will be if I ever nab my Corvette. :cool6:

brinstar wrote:manual is a lot of fun, you feel like you have more control over the car imho, thus you are more attuned to what it is doing and how it is running

and you get better gas mileage and you can spin the tires and you can drive better in snow or spinout in snow if that is your thing

I drive "velcro" too. I prefer manual but can't have it for the same reasons Tikker listed. Next car I get will be a manual though. I'm kinda interested in investing in a 6 speed manual one day. Not sure how different it will be though.

In my hometown there is a place called Dillon Park, and because it's just a lot of space, my dad took me there to learn to drive a stick-in his huge Ford pickup-that was a nightmare btw-but at least I know now. though I probably won't own another 5speed for a long time because they are hell in the city with all these bridges and stopped traffic =(
