My kids have several friends, are in scouts and (since I have a large family) have many cousins. There is also another homeschooling family across the street we do phys ed with which is fun.

I'm curious as to how the homeschooled kids you know are socially inept. Is it because the parents never socialized or simply because the kids act more comfortable with adults than other kids? I'd love some examples, seriously.

Every home schooled kid I have interacted with, and I have interacted with tens of thousands have all seem like little emotionless automatons. (Remember South Park? There was something to that homeschooled persona which they weren't just making up for the show.)

Ok I lied about the tens of thousands, but of the 10-20 I have bumped into, that is what they were like.

More power to you, though. I mean shit, if they turn out alright and don't end up dregs, criminals, leeches on social programs, etc, and enjoy life you did something right.

I just think it royally ruins trying to make plans to get some ass off of the girl sitting in front of you...I mean..unless you live in Alabama or Mississippi...

Honestly I don't know. I dunno anything about them personally except that they would say "I was homeschooled" when I ask "what school did you go to before this?". I just remember there were several kids at my high school who were home schooled all the way up to that point and they were very...strange? One extreme case a kid delayed himself a year from graduating because he decided his freshman year that he wasn't capable of being around that many people at a time without freaking. Most of the exposure I've had to home schooled kids are that they are quiet, don't respond to anything you say, sit by themselves at lunch, stood there like a lump during gym, etc etc. Other one's were just intensely random, would say odd things to anyone who tried to make any attempt at socializing with them, dressed immensely different, had like 1 friend and only 1 friend.

Shit my school had folks like that and they weren't home schooled..

I worked at a public library for 10 years and saw hundreds of homeschooled kids. They were the ones that behaved themselves and didn't act like asses or tried to destroy things. They were polite and self-sufficient. They all had distinct personalities and could hold a decent conversation about everything under the sun.

Homeschooled kids can be a bit reserved with strangers since so many people behave oddly when they find out a child is homeschooled. You tell someone your child is homeschooled and they immediately start asking your children questions like it's their right to make sure you're doing the job to their standards. Like the schools don't require tests or evaluations done.

I'm going to homeschool my kids.

They will learn how to efficiently board a French frigate laiden with Spanish gold, swordfighting, wenching and most importantly how to dispatch a zombie in hand to hand combat.

I can't imagine missing the feeling of moving from a grade where you keep your stuff in your desk, to when you get your own locker. Having that free social hour on the bus (later used to do your homework) Recess every day, scholastic book club, friends...later on the dances, the stories about bad cafeteria food, the crushes, the fashion trends, the activities...well you get the idea.

There were a lot of things I learned at school that I wouldn't have learned at home. Sure I learned to behave myself, but I wouldn't have known how to stand up for myself, how to fit in, how to really make friends nearly as well.

I think it is amazing that you home school, because it seems like it can be a lot of work, and I don't know that it would be something I would want to do not because I lack the knowledge, but because I feel there would be so much that my kids won't/can't get from me. Plus I have a lot more good stories from when I was growing up that I might not have had otherwise. Apologies, it's 1:30 and I'm rambling. Those were just some thoughts, not trying to change any minds.

I wasnt homeschooled and I am extremely socially retarded. I was "grounded" for months at a time, once for a straight year. It cripples a middle schooler when they cant do anything after school like socialize.
I get uncomfortable around people, I cant go anywhere alone, I cant tell a story correctly.
Part of this is poor planning on my mother's part due to grounding, but a larger part is ADD, brain moves faster than my mouth.

But, I still think public education is the way to go, for me personally, anyway. As IF said, there are just far too many valuable lessons to learn, socially, that you can only get in a public school setting. Sure, you can combine your kids with another family for "socializing" but as you said, these kids tend to be more well behaved than regular school kids. As an adult, you deal with HUGE jerkasses at work, you really need to know how to cope with that instead of just exploding and going postal on the office. You also cant tell mommy/bossman, because most likely, he wont care.

It really depends on the parents and infrastructure in place. There are a lot of parents who are in a situation where they can do more for their kids than public school, including socially. There are a lot who can't, but do it for other reasons and probably shouldn't.

I like the discipline and structure of school. I think that's important for kids, whereis many I know homeschooled are behind in routine, interpersonal skills, and social cognizance.
