I honestly think Soriano stays in Washington. If not there my second guess would be NY. I just dont see him going anywhere else long term but those 2 spots.

Anyone think the Red Soxs have much of a chance to win the AL east? I just dont see them being able to do it.

They just don't have the pitching to do it.

They will win the wild card. Yankees got alot stronger, and i believe will win the east. The central is the Tigers to lose. As long as they dont have a HUGE collapse they take that easily. The west..../shrug i have no idea. All the teams are hovering around .500, but i dont believe that is because it is a weak division. I really think they are all just very equal, and every team is playing better of late. Toss up there. Wild card will be Boston, i dont see the Twins or the Whitesox beating out the Red Sox for the card.

How did they get Lopez if the trade deadline already passed?

Is there some kind of loophole for injuries?

You can still make trades after the deadline, it's just that all the players involved have to clear waivers.

Generally the only players that move are ones that not many other people want, or that have prohibitive salaries.

No loophole. July 31 was the NON waiver trade deadline. Basically they have until Aug 31 to do a waiver line trade. Here is how it works.

Orioles no longer want Lopez (lopez actually demanded a trade), so the Orioles out right release him, puttin him on waivers. You then have a 10 day waiting period for someone to "claim" Lopez. Teams get a shot at claiming him in reverse order of the standings, if claimed the team must then work out a trade with the Orioles, and pick up his current salary. If nobody claims him then he is a free agent.

In this case the Orioles and Red Sox most likely already had a trade worked out for him, Orioles then release him, and when its the Red Sox turn they can acquire lopez and then finish the actual trade of him.

If say another team for instance like the Tampa Bay devil rays, decide they want to pick him up then they would work out a trade, if a trade does not work out the Orioles could have pulled him off of the waiver wire.

In history there are teams that have "blocked" a waiver wire trade". If lets say the Yankees were in second place in the AL east, and the Orioles were trying to move him to the Red Sox, the yankees to block the trade could say they will acquire him. Because they are lower in the standings they have first priority.

The downside to this is the risk of taking on a huge contract, you also have to make room for that player on your 25 man roster. So alot of teams dont try to block a trade.

The other part of this is that you can only place a player on waivers once. If the Orioles trade to the Red Sox was "blocked" and they pulled him back, they could NOT try it again at a later date.

As I recall, the team that put the guy up on waivers can just outright release him without asking for a trade back, too.

I seem to recall some team getting shafted when they put a claim on some guy with a ridiculous contract to attempt to block a trade, and the original team that owned the guy let the claim go through and washed their hands of the guy. The team attempting the block was left with a guy they didn't really want, and now had to pay for.

No arlos, part of the Collective Bargaining agreement you cant just outright release someone. Its called designating for assigment, when you do this then they autoatically go to the waiver wire. If in 10 days he is not claimed by a team he is then an unristricted free agent.

And yes there has been afew waiver wire blocks that turned out REALLY bad for teams.

I reread you question Arlos....they can let that team claim him without asking for a trade back yes. There is a waiver fee that is involved...but yeah you are right that is an option.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I don't remember which team it was, but I remember one not that long ago that got majorly burned on an attempted waiver block, since the other team jsut said "OK, fine, you take him", and the blocking team had no choice but to, since they'd put in the claim, and were thus saddled with a guy they didn't want and yet had to shell out big $$$$$ for.

Atlanta claimed Randy Meyers and got stuck with his big ass contract.

By the way, the waiver period is 3 days. Once a player cleared waiver, the team then can designate him for assignment (release, trade, send to minor). A team can put up to seven players per day on waiver. Some teams out of playoff contentions had put their entire roster on waiver in the past.

Yes the claiming period is actually 47 hours but eh there are alot of things that make the process longer.

And the trade that you guys are thinking of was with Randy Meyers but it was the Braves that actually wanted Meyers. The Blue jays placed him on waiveirs, knowing that the Braves would probably want him, It was the Padres that claimed him and got stuck with his contract.

That's right I just got the teams mixed up. The Padres end up paying the 14 million dollars on the contract. I think Meyers pitched only 15 or so innings for them.

Not all negroes sucked, only the tall slow ones that play center for the Warriors.

It is actually a muscular problem in his pitching forearm. They are addiment about it not being an elbow problem. He is getting placed on the 15 day DL, and then he will be reivaluated after that.
