I think the movie you are refering to is "28 Days Later". Those weren't actual zombies in the traditional sense, they were people infected with a disease that cause them to lose cognitive thought and just go ape shit killing everyone.

28 Days Later was a good movie, though. First horror movie I really liked since Alien.
