again, what we normally use isn't very helpful with a crap internet connection since he isn't home >.<
he usually calls me from his house, he has a really great international plan that's like 3 bucks for 2 hours.

skype is free
just download it, make sure you have mic/speakers, and if you're talking to someone else who has skype, it is free.
if you are calling someone's phone, that's when you pay for it. just tell him to download it if he has internet access.
