Having children in general sounds like a pretty shitty thing.

Some days it can be, others it's the best thing in the world.

There's like 10 Russian Day Care center around me, all competing for same group of customers, so we only pay $35 a day.

Around here it is. Plus I'm talking about place thats open 6am to 7pm, Monday through Saturday, and doesn't enroll more than 7-8 kids a year.

A girl I work with pays almost $1000/mo for two kids.

She was telling me this morning that a newborn to 1 year old will cost around $1000 just for that one kid ... yikes!

My son is older now so his day camp stuff is like $135 a week during the summer.

At what age do you guys consider it ok for a kid to stay home alone all day? I have been thinking about this and talking with his mother about it. I am thinking around 13 or so.

Age doesn't matter, maturity does. Only you'll know when is right. Some kids could at 10, some couldn't at 16.

Thats right, in another year or so, we are letting Taxx stay home alone.

I was staying home alone at the age of 7 or so, but I knew everybody in the area by name and they knew who I was, so it wasn't a big deal.

Do you let him go to local stores by himself? Do you trust your neighbors?

Stupid parents in this area let their 8-12 year-olds wander the streets by themselves well after dark.

I don't walk around out here without a knife or something to protect myself. Crackheads and other various junkies are fucking crazy.

thats crazy...i won't ever let my girl walk round after dark until she's out of the house....kidding...but it must be scary to let your kid out late for the first time. or home alone for that matter.

When I was younger, my cerfew was when the street lights came on, I had to be on the porch.

Oh, I wouldnt walk around Harri's neighborhood without Harri weilding a knife. His neighbors both to the side and across the street are shady characters.

One of those houses was just raided, they boarded it up because it was essentially a crack den

I think he's just a drug dealer. No one has that many friends come by at all times of day.

this was crazy to me. Honestly, I've spent time up there and both times I've been I see this-and my friend says he was allowed to do the same thing.

I was completely weirded out by seeing kids this age on foot at stores, at 11pm...even during the day though-they were out and about. I couldn't say they were up to no good, because I don't know...but it looked "no good" and their mouths were all foul! I didn't swear until after high school even...

I'm sure the areas are completely different in every way but I was surprised at this major difference in where I'm from and visiting Massachusetts. At that age, I was home by dark and my mother did not have to call twice. She came after that.

You guys act like you were saints during your teen years. You know damned well you did the same sort of shit you frown upon today when driving by a group of teens, judging them.

Well one town over, you're generally safe at all hours of the day/night.

Here in New Bedford? Fuck no...not even close.

Standing out in the middle of the street and slowly moving after a car sits there and has to honk to get them to move? Nope, never did that.
Stay out at all hours of the night? Nope. I'd call if I was late, but I was generally home close to curfew.

Slack parenting, I say.
