I didn't know the "gift from god" was that common of a thing honestly. (i've never heard that) Braysen IS our little gift because I had a miscarriage before him so to me it was just a blessing to be pregnant with him and eh, we liked the name it just happens to be fitting!

ps. our cats name means "gift" too - xaria. her whole litter was named names meaning gift because they were born on our wedding night and my mom (who's a breeder) told me that I could have one from her litter so they were the "wedding gift litter".

Neither of our children's nicknames mean "a gift from god" or anything like that We are original.

i like the name lukas for a boy or luci for a girl--both mean "bringer of light," which is what i'd like my kid to do: bring light into my life.

two problems:

a) we had a rat named luci so i think that'd probably be out of the running
b) we will probably not ever reproduce.


i also like the names audrey, cherise, john, and christopher. i dunno, i think i just tend to be more traditional and/or old-fashioned with my name choices.

On the flip side, I always feel bad for the kids who get the oddball names and/or "unique" spellings. I just picture the poor kids rolling their eyes and spelling it oh-so-patiently for everyone for the rest of their lives. Or at school..

My middle name is Benjamin & my sister's is Alexandra...

I'm all about naming a child William and calling them Liam myself. Representing my Irish roots etc.

But all of these names with consonant pairings + vowel followed by a "Y" is just plain bad taste.

Almost as bad as my aunt naming her child Oona... which in turn is almost as bad as listening to that kid run around screaming any time she visits.

There's a difference between giving your child a name that won't have them in school with 15 other kids with the same name (believe me I know about this personally) and slinging together some crap name.

Yeah, I can see that. I was named "Jessica" along with 50% of all girls born in the early 80s. The other 50% were named "Jennifer" apparently. In elementary school, we had to distinguish the Jessica's by first name, last initial. But, for example, my brother-in-law just named his poor son Jaccobie (pronounced Ja-co-bie) in addition to a daughter already named Phallen. Those kids will forever be correcting the spelling of their names, having to help with pronunciation, and getting mail with their name misspelled. Oh well. To each their own.

fallon, maybe. i knew a girl named fallon and i thought it was a really cute name. but naming someone phallen? you might as well name them penisra or gweiner or something.

I don't know much about Fallon now. Then, she was into music, liked coloring books and had good taste in books and style. She recommended books to me on her 22nd birthday. I read them all. We went to the beach together and got sunburned.

we found out after he was born that my son's name means "Severe" "Stern" and derived from Thor "God of War"..... pretty hillarious... and he actually does run around like BamBam

i've always loved that name, and not too common. i'm a big fan of names that are 'different' myself, because growing up my 2 best friends names were ashley as well, not to mention that i had many, many acquaintances named ashley.. i've probably known about 20 ashleys in my life, and those were all in norfolk where i grew up. my dad named me off of young and the restless because he thought she was hot, but apparently my parents didn't know how hot the name would be between 80-85.

i really like the names allie and elise for girls, but boys are so much harder.

oh lorelei is such a cute name. i also like elise, a lot.

you're right though, gyps, girls are so much easier to name than boys imo.

Oh I totally agree with the misspelling of names on purpose to an extent where they are just nuts. I mean adding a y that's fine. I've seen Jayden and Jaden for instance, both are ok. But Phallan for Fallon? That's terrible. I just hate common names I guess. I was never the only Tiffany in any class, there were always at least two of us and untold numbers in the entire school. I just want to make sure that my future children don't have to be identified by first and last name like I was :p

I was fortunate. Kevin isn't so rare a name as people have never heard of it, but it's uncommon enough that it was pretty rare if I wasn't the only Kevin in any given class.

I personally know about 20 Kevins and throughout school I can remember another 20, easy. Very common name.

I didn't even meet another Denise until I was about 14. My class had lots of Lisa's and Jennifer's and Stephanie's. I actually felt odd duck out because my name was 'different'. How times change.

Joshua is fairly rare now that people stopped naming their kid that.

I go by Harrison so much that people still think it's my first name for about a year until I clue them in. I like the name Harrison much more than Joshua, and I like my name.

i love the name joshua, and that would be true even if it wasn't mister boyfriend's name. i think it's a good, solid name and it doesn't lend itself to stupid nicknames (example: my cousin's name is scott and even though he's like 11 years old now, his family still calls him scotty. i *hate* that.)
