harri i am really sorry for your loss... your grandmother kissing his forehead must have been a beautiful show of love.
hope you and griever are doing well.
my first funeral was in 6th grade, childhood friend was killed along with her mom and dad when a drunk driver going the wrong way on I-10 hit them head on. it was pretty horrible for me. used to have nightmares about it, paritcularly her in the casket.
then had a friend in 9th grade kill himself, that was awful too.
had a friend a few months after graduation killed in a car crash on her way to her 2nd semester of college.
So I've never been to a funeral.

I agree with you that a lot of it was typical teenager stuff, but overall it's typical human stuff. It's the general nature of people (as a whole, not specific obviously) to feel sorry for themselves and want to outdo someone somehow; that's at any age, and that's why you see such ridiculous bickering at funerals regarding what they leave behind.. someone always wants more and feels slighted. As far as her family, that's a pretty sad story actually. her parents were a joke - Ashley was born with her intestines on the wrong side of her body because her mom was a crack whore, literally. I mean she still hung around sometimes, I knew her.. she didn't just like leave Ashley on the doorstep, but when she was around she did more harm than good.
Her grampa was wonderful though, he's who raised her and helped raise me - he was as pissed as I was at all the poor pitiful me's coming out of nowhere.. Grampa was super tight with all her friends, he was one of those guardians who made sure to take an active role in every aspect of her life that he could, so he knew they were all full of shit and told them as much after the funeral. made me laugh~

I was actually the same when papaw died last year. He was 78 and had uncurable lung cancer (the doctor said they looked like swiss cheese), on TOP of struggling with bad black lung from 50 years in the coal mines. I only cried once during the whole thing. I was more glad to see that he lived a nice long life, and that he didnt have to suffer anymore, like trying to catch his breath, so painfully that he couldnt stand up, after just walking to the fridge to grab a drink. His suffering ended and he died in the hospital painlessly and peacefully while sedated. Not much more i could ask for, given the scenario.
Now my mamaw, that was a different story. She was only 59 and didnt even get to see her grandbabies graduate high school. I struggled with that, but i was a lot younger because that was in '96
but yeah, sorry about your loss
