ugh, that's the pits. I think the worst part is not knowing what caused it.. there's no reassurance in that. it's like one of those things where you dread hearing the news, but even if it's the worst case you know what the deal is.

did the doctors tell you if there's any likelihood of it happening again? i sure hope not

My cousin had a stroke when he was 19. It put him in a coma. The doctors kept insisting at first that it was a drug related coma and kept trying to ferret out what he had taken. It wasn't until my aunt pulled him from that hospital and took him to another that they found it really was a stroke. Can't really blame the docs, though. It was in the early 70s.

He's perfectly fine now, aside from a limp and as far as I know has never had another one.

The first thing they suspect in kids that age is drugs. I can say for a fact my brother doesn't do them at all. He drinks a lot but doesn't do drugs. Gyps they said another stroke is just as likely...or in this case unlikely...to happen as the first one was so he'll probably live a totally normal life and never have problems with it again.

cousin of mine had a massive stroke a couple years ago

she was healthy, active, etc etc

she was a vegetable for about a year

she's now at the point where she can communicate a bit, and has some use of her arms and legs

One of my grandmothers had a series of micro-strokes over the course of years that effectively combined to leave her in about the same state as someone afflicted with a serious case of alzheimers. It was extremely sad. She would recognize people, but her personality changed, and she had no real connection to reality at all. It was seriously so bad I could barely stand to see her like that, knowing that she would have hated it just much herself if she'd known what was going on.

She lingered on like that for a few years, where we literally had to keep her in a nursing home, because there was no way for us to care for her. When she finally died, I was sad she was gone, of course, but also really relieved in a way, if for no other reason than I knew just how much she would've hated her state if she was lucid, and knew SHE would have considered it a relief.

Ultimately, from what the doctors said, the cause was the fact she was a heavy smoker for 40+ years. Knowing that, there's no way in bloody hell I am ever going to become a tobacco smoker....

Sorry to hear about your brother, Taxx, glad he's recovering OK. Strokes are nothing to laugh about.
