ignore the snobbery ITT, go buy yourself an el cheapo package at target or guitar center and dick around with it. learn some chords, learn some scales, learn some songs you like

if you decide guitar's not for you, hey, you only dropped a hundo on it

if you love it and can't get enough sound from your el cheapo package, THEN go shopping for some "real" stuff

at that point, i would recommend a mexican-made fender and maybe a Vintage Club 30 amp made by Crate if you can find one. both are relatively inexpensive and would sound great together.

For a beginner amp, that's cheap and sounds great, I highly suggest the Line 6 SpiderIII series.

It's an electronic amp, but it's by far the best for a beginner I've heard. (15w and 30w variations)

My personal suggestion for electric guitars.

Cheap for the win.

I played Bass for awhile during high school, but hated the fact it really only sets the beat and you can't really play a whole song by yourself. So I imagine guitar isn't that much different.

We'll see if I ever get around to buying one though :)

Les Claypool would smack you with his dick if he heard you say that.

Or Fieldy...

Jaco would anally rape all three of them at once somehow

I just picked up a MiM Strat, just to have something with some single coils. It's quickly become my main guitar, I'm very impressed. Gibson's cheaper guitars seem to be hit or miss in the quality control department these days.

My setup is pretty simple, I have an old beat up Sunn 4x12, and Valve jr 5 watt tube head, an eq / blues driver / big muff. The 5 watt head may sound small, but it is loud enough that I put an attenuator on it so I can get the tubes cooking without annoying the neighbors.

it just came to me that we could be discussing 2 different Jaco's the one i am referring to played bass for Weather Report. Jaco Pastorius.

I knew him cause my mom was playing Jazz around philly and we did a bunch dates with WR. Our guitarist and drummer at the time were neighbors with him also. He had recommended them to her.

well considering he mentioned Jaco in response to a brief bass-player commentary, i would assume he did in fact mean Pastorius
