EDMONTON — Sunday marked the coldest Dec. 13 in Edmonton’s history.

Environment Canada recorded a frigid -46.1 C, or -58.4 C with wind chill, at the Edmonton International Airport at 5 a.m., Environment Canada meteorologist Pierre Lessard said.

The old record of -36.1 C was set last year, he said.

“To break a temperature by 10 degrees is very exceptional,” said Lessard.

A ridge of frigid Arctic air has hit all the prairie provinces this weekend, causing record-low temperatures in many parts of northern Alberta, Lessard said.

“Temperatures are very cold over Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. There are some places more windy than the others, especially northern Saskatchewan and the north half of Manitoba are very cold,” he said.

But cold Arctic winds are normal in the winter and should pass through by the middle of this week, Lessard said.

I'm pretty sure that I've never experienced a single second of below zero temperatures in my life. I was born in late March in Missouri after the coldest winter in state history (at the time), so I was easily exposed to sub-zero temperature in-utero. Aaaand, the coldest that I can ever remember was my 'spring break' vacation to Quebec City in my early twenties. It was around 10° and I was bundled up like an eskimo... watching the native Quebecois ice-skate in shorts and a warm flannel. It's probably 30° with a stiff wind here in North Texas and I'm wearing a thick coat and boots to work . So, yeah... fuck the cold, especially below zero.

Never experienced it... never plan to.

Though, Portland is on our short-list (San Diego, Portland and Charlotte) for destinations when we finally leave Texas. It sounds like I'll have to get used to cold weather

I've gotten acclimated to snow and it's kind of cool.

However, growing up, we were in the same boat, Vonk. I grew up in San Diego, and the only time I saw snow or cold was when we took a trip to Big Bear.

After getting out of language school in the military, I moved to Maryland in December. I had off base housing, and the first big snow I go out to my little California Toyota with no weight in the back, and proceed to drive to work. The first bridge I went over, going about 15, my truck started to loop around. The Maryland peoples drove around me waving, and pointing at my California license plate with a knowing gleam and laughing.

The first time it was below zero I thought I was going to die. Freakin' unbelievable cold.

Then I was forward deployed to Bahrain where it was 120 in the shade, and life was better.

The weather in Portland isn't that bad, Vonk. I spent time up there, and it's bearable. Nothing like Canada.

Same story with me. For all practical purposes, I grew up in Texas, mostly Dallas. I think in all the years I lived there, it got down in the single digits only a handful of times at night, and I can only recall 2... maaaybe 3 snows that = more than a couple inches at best. Once was winter 1977 or 1978. We actually got enough snow to build a snowman in the front yard.
The ice storms, when they hit, were bad though. My first ever driving experience on ice was the ice storm of 1990 that laid near an inch of ice on all the roads.
I had my mother's friend's 3 kids in the backseat (whom I had picked up from school and was taking home) and was coming up on a small neighborhood intersection stop sign.
I still thank my lucky stars there were no cars anywhere near me... I had been going maybe 10-15 mph, pumped the brakes slowly to come to a stop, and promptly spun 2 and half circles right through the stop sign into the middle of the intersection with all three kids screaming "WEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!" as we hit the opposite curb.

I'm still getting used to winters up here, but it's really not so bad. I've acclimated to the cold for the most part, though my skin says otherwise (dry dry dry ick).

I did discover last winter though, why it is you keep a sled in the house, and why your kid keeps a bus route for school despite the school being right behind your home. Walking through a 4 foot snow drift dragging a 2 year old covered in the stuff is nothing fun. At. All.

I've been in 30 below a couple times. Once was when I was in college in Walla Walla in eastern Washington. Wasn't really dressed for it either. Just sneakers, jeans, a down parka and gloves. Bunch of us went out in that without knowing how cold it was because we needed to do observations for an astronomy class. We got so cold, we had to jog the mile or so back to campus just to stay warm, and when we got there, we rapidly joined an in-progress party and used the St. Bernard-inspired copious amounts of alcohol method to warm up. heh. Walla Walla IS where I learned how to drive on snow, though. My last couple years there I had an old 70's Ford Granada that you had to drive carefully anyway, because it had all the nimbleness of a an elephant on a unicycle, so adjusting for snow wasn't that huge a stretch.

The other time was when I went on a trip to Edmonton several years back, in January. There at least I mostly drove everywhere, but there was still walking from parking places into buildings, and such. I did understand much more WHY they have such a monstrous mall with everything (including a roller coaster) inside... Because no one in their right mind would ever be OUTside... rofl.

Oh, and Vonk, you shouldn't worry about Portland. Them getting snow is pretty rare. Hell, it's pretty rare for Seattle, too. Happens, but not all that often.

I know snow... used to think the sound of the snow plow chains was Santa!
I absolutely detest the cold weather in flatlands though because the wind seems to cut right through you. Can't wait to get back to the mountains.

My dad returned to the area moving to Saugerties a few years back and now he is back in Woodstock on the weekends... damn fool works in Stamford, CT these days.

My company is moving to Stamford Connecticut in April. Who does he work for?

Not much of a difference, I currently work in Norwalk, which is only a few exits away from Stamford.

He works for Philips (Consumer Lifestyles division?).
I was born in Stamford and up until the past ten years I have always had family there and still have an uncle up in New Canaan.
I know that area fairly decently.
I went to Longshore Sailing School from the age of 12 to 15 in Westport; I always looked forward to the month where I took courses there... /sigh I miss sailing, I really really need to get my Hobie 16 under full sail this year.

I joined a sailing team out of Longshore in westport. Small world.

I was the worst Laser racer out there, but one of the best on Hobies.

I could single hand race either one and not many others in my regattas could, so I always had the comparative weight advantage. Just thinking about flying a hull makes me smile.

We're racing a 46 footer. I also loved racing Lasers when I was a kid. Longshore Sailing School is regarded as one of the best sailing schools in the country. I probably don't need to tell you that though.

Move back to Connecticut.

I've got a house there that I stand to inherit in Stamford; 3,000 sq ft that has been converted into a rental.

If I end up in the area for grad school, I'm going to see about taking over one of the rentals and commuting via the train (double lot with a good sized parking area close proximity to the marina, would suit my needs).

Started dropping names of my alumni and thought better of it. Lets just say that I didn't think much of them simply because of their parents, but later chance connections have afforded me some fun weekends over the years.

Dropped to almost 0 here today. It's fucking warmer in Alaska, legitimately.
