conquest was disbanded and all the players recieved an instant suspension, not banning
the handful of people in the guild that had previous suspensions got banned
(for the record they were later re-formed and apologized to by verant, who admitted they handled the entire incident very wrong)

and regardless of whether AL and FOH and other guilds had people working at the gaming companies to steer them in the right direction, it's not like they cheated. Just had a bit of a head start. They're still the best.

that is all~

Yeah, there's no advantage at all to being told the seru bane recipe (despite the fact the designer forgot to implement the quest for it)

I don't think you have any idea how big of an advantage it is to know what you have to do ahead of time, rather than spend time testing stuff

I mean, it's not like FoH had Mcquaid in thier guild.........oh wait, they did have him in their guild

jeje?

Well, McQuaid in your guild, or a batphone directly to Mcquaid...

Different avenues, same result.

I have Minsc in my party in Baldur's Gate 2. He's the only batphone I'll ever need

You forgot Boo; you cannot mention Minsc without Boo too.

If we were to go back playing EQ1 from day 1 with the knowledge of the game we have now we would completely own it.

I would singlehandedly make AL/FoH etc. look like gimps with that knowledge.

No, you would likely still get killed in BoT.

I 2boxed BoT when and if you ever saw me in that shithole past my 60-65 grind.

Big "if" though...

After watching the FoH/AL/LOS/Conquest compete in EQ and now watching as these four guilds recreated in their own respected incarnations compete in WoW....

I think it's more the skill of the players, the leadership, and the overall drive and dedication of the guild as a whole that makes up whether or not you get things done first.

Sure FoH and AL may have had head starts ( who remembers FoH killing the Statue of Rallos Zek literally the first day velious opened - wtf ? ) but after all said and done, when it comes down to the end of the available content, these guilds always seemed to be within arms length of each other.

Anyways my whole point is that if you're going to rip on guilds for the batphone, rip on them in comparsion to the respective non-batphoned other high end guilds. (if you really believe those even exist? hell.. maybe a high end guild is defined by the extent of its batphone? )

I don't think you should be riping on them in comparison to yourselves though, because you have to understand the kind of dedication these guys put in to this game and their guilds. (regardless of whether that is a pro or con - some people don't have their lives to dedicate to computer games)

Respect

eh?

I was in LoS for like 3 years

I know exactly the "kind of dedication these guys put in to this game and their guilds"

I was also the rep from Nameless that got flown to San Diego to talk to Sony about the game, There I talked to a FoH dude, as well as the Dev's that were giving them the heads up about stuff

please stfu now

95% of it depends on the time you put into the game. If you have the same people show up everyday to try things out, you will win. When half the people are showing up half the time then it's going to be harder, period.

Everyone has batphones, boss. You can't avoid having one. I personally had many friends xserver who informed me of end-game encounters in GoD and OoW. Everyone knows something about an encounter. Whether that information was acquired through experience, or your friend's friend's friend in TR... the mob in question will end up dying. How you acquired it doesn't mean jack shit anymore... and hasn't for a very long time.

Maybe that's just me though. Shrug.

It wasn't this case early on. There were a few guilds that had a bunch of insider info, and other guilds trying to compete.

Most hardcore people are without loyalty and will take the path of least resistance. If Guild X is achieving due to insider information, then people want to head there, despite the fact another guild has levelled, equipped, and worked to get them where they are.

We saw it all the time, Taxx. Certain people get nicely equipped and then jump ship to the guild that has the insider information to be able to achieve with the path of least resistance.

The other guild that is doing things with zero insider info also needs to continuously level and equip new people, who they also have to try and keep. It's somewhat of a vicious cycle. You fall behind, and the gap widens. You have less hardcore people.

The funny thing is it was attributed to skill, which was ludicrous.

C'est la vie, though.

I didn't know Mcquaid was in FoH. Is that for real?

success in EQ did require a certian amount of skill, but 90% of what made guilds successful was (like Taxx said) the time you put in, and the attention to detail

And jirig, you needed to see what it was like prior to Xserver chat

Pre-Xserver, someone would kill a mob, and it'd take a couple of weeks before the next guild would figure it out

now, guildX kills mob_01 and the next 25 guilds kill it within a day or 2

there's no comparison to pre-luclin, and post luclin

But if you want the best example, just look at the 1st seru kill

FoH got him like a month before anyone else

FoH was told the serubane recipe in beta, and the quest to find the recipe never ended up making it into the game (still not there afaik)

Tikker I love how you assume people are attacking or even talking to you

I don't care about you

same goes for LOS and EQ

all well past its expiry date

What was his characters name? Was he in FoH from start to finish?

Jesus, talk about having an advantage haha.

I'm not saying they exploited that advantage, I don't know because I wasn't there, but the opportunity was definitely present

Mcquaid played a ranger, Aradune

I'm not sure how active he was in the guild
If you do a google for "foh +aradune" you'll see lots of refernces to it

IIRC FoH was the 1st really big guild, and the EQ team kind of followed them around just to see how they reacted to stuff

Friendships were made, and McQuaid started talking with them and eventually participating in events

Eventually he was just invited

Wether he was an active raiding member, I have no idea. But he was definately in their corner with batphone infoz, and really, if you've played EQ at all, you should know that's a huge deal to know what to do, and just have to work on refining your execution (compared to learning an event, formulating a strat, then moving on to refining execution)

I always thought McQuaid played a paladin and put the first "epic" class specific weapon (Fiery Avenger) in boost his horrific paladin DPS. Who am I thinking of?

Cool he played a ranger, \m/ Surefall Glade \m/

They were definately the first big guild. When I started playing (before nameless) I played on Rodcet for a few months. I heard about them and decided to make a character on their server just to see what they were all about. There really wasn't any comparable guild for a long time after that...most of them were carried over level 50 players from the beta.

EQ didn't wipe beta charectors?
