Given the Side Effects, and other toxins that can hurt one, I somehow doubt legalizing pot would solely hurt drug dealers.

My preference would be to keep it illegal, but remove harsh penalties for druggies, and merely impose fines.

Part of the problem is we do not have long term studies on pot. We just know the short term effects. Although if you want to see the long term effects of it, just take a look at some long time users.

There are many side effects and health risks for pot smokers. I personally am ambivalent about it, but its interesting to see so many saying how 'casual' it is, and yet over 150,000 people a year enter rehab for marijuana addiction. Can you imagine the numbers if it was legal

Tobacco has the a lot of long term issues also. Most of the abusers of pot will do it legal or not.

I am saying get some money out of the taxes, reduce the price, and take the profits from the drug pushers.

I admitted that smoking was stupid... why the big surprise? Sorry Labbats, you get no cleverness points. Given the consequences of smoking anything it is an idiotic thing to do.

Those people must be ridiculously weak willed.

Thank you Yamori. Going to rehab solely for marjuana addiction is absurd.

I never understand people that say 'why do it at all?' People like to get high and feel good, period. Drinking, pot smoking, other illicit drug use, riding rollercoasters, jumping out of airplanes, etc. They all induce chemical changes in your brain. Just the way it is.

And what are all these other vague 'side effects' of pot use. Reefer Madness does not count as actual research people, sorry.

Marijuana is not a drug. I used to suck dick for coke. Now that's an addiction. You ever suck some dick for marijuana?

If I wasn't Jamaican, why would I wear this hat?

You guys gotta get me out of here! There's this guy Nasty Nate who wants my cocktail fruit, and everyone here likes fresh fish! Then The Squirrel Master came out of left field and told me I'm his bitch!

Mo, do you smoke ciggs and do other drugs, too?

No. Well, I drink occasionally. I used to smoke cigs and quit. I experimented with all sorts of drugs in college, but that was purely experimentation. As far as I can tell, I dont have an addictive personality. The only thing I was ever verifiably addicted to were cigarettes, and I quit smoking those several years ago now.

I enjoy some occasional marijuana, but have no problem at all not smoking it. Have to stay clean for a job or some such? Not a problem.

Excellent. However, how many of your friends who followed the same path had problems staying clean?

Thats really my point. I've seen so many friends in Cali fuck up their lives over drugs.

Yeah I dont discount your concern Lyion. And Im certainly not comfortable realistically with legalization of all drugs, although my inner libertarian tells me to support even crack legalization. I just think, on balance, that criminalization of marijuana doesnt make a whole lot of sense.

Why waste resources on this particular problem? Why not instead turn it into a resource generator, through taxation? Hell, you could fund extensive, real rehab for every drug addict in the country probably just on revenue from legal marijuana sale. Or completely revamp every inner city falling-apart school, etc.

On a more serious note... you're not going to stop the drug dealers by legalizing pot. While yes pot does make up a large portion of the trade... it's the harder stuff that's MUCH more expensive and addictive that they make the bulk of their money from.

True, there isn't much money in selling pot unless you sell it in massive amounts.

how many people per year enter rehab for alcohol addiction

According to the American Psychiatric Association, 10 million adults and 3 million children are alcoholics.

One is legal. One is illegal. If pot was legal I believe its rehab numbers would be similar.

I'd rather not legalize enough drugs so that we end having some of the drug crises that parts of Europe are going thorugh.

for those 3 million children it's illegal

also you're omitting something important here: alcohol is physically addicting, marijuana is not.

Alcohol is a depressant, just like Mairjuana. They are similar, I think. The difference is how pot effects the brain. I personally know a friend who teaches at UCSD who can't go a day without pot. He's told me such, and is somewhat irked that pot essentially has a huge hold on him, moreso than smoking ciggs or anything else has.

Many, many drink occasionally and are not addicted to alcohol. Likewise, I'm sure many use pot sparingly. However the mental issues caused by marijuana are what is disturbing to me.

I'd like to see more long term studies on the effects of pot. Right now we really do not know the effects, sans the side effects and immediate issues it can cause.

Here's a quote taken from http://www.drugfreeatlast.com/Kids-marijuana.html

Tetrahydrocannabinol,is the main, active ingredient in marijuana and it temporarily alters brain functioning that affects sensory perception, reflexes, and coordination. Because it changes the way people see, hear, and feel, it can impair judgment. Driving under the influence of marijuana is extremely dangerous. The fact that many teens smoke marijuana while they are drinking alcohol makes driving even more lethal.

Marijuana is physically addicting. Each year, 100,000 people in the United States alone are treated for marijuana dependence. Heavy marijuana smokers who quit smoking may experience the same symptoms of withdrawal as users of nicotine or other drugs.
