I spent most of my childhood and highschool career wrestling. It was a fantastic teacher of discipline and mental training. I haven't really watched too much of UFC etc., what I have seen however is that a bunch of wrestling is involved. Is grappling the superpower of street fights? I'd like to think if I got in close on someone that it'd be game over due to my background. I haven't tried it an all out street brawl though, I don't get that angry.

My buddy who wrestled in high school got in a street fight with some thug, and he didn't lose, but he didn't win. He'd pin the guy into the street, then just kind of hold him there. Let go. Repeat. It sucked.
From the fistfights I've gotten into, all I can tell you is that if some guy started up some kung fu stance, I'd laugh in his face. That stuff has no relevance in an alleyway booze brawl. Knowing how to punch someone (follow through) and self confidence will topple any schoolroom techniques.

The fights you should be shooting for are the ones that last 2 seconds, max. You hitting them, and them hitting the floor (hopefully). Hollywood fights = poopoo caca.

I took a martial art called Kajukenbo which is a mix of various street styles and was developed in Hawaii.... We had instructors who were former black belts in many styles to include Aikido, TKDo, Karate. We even had greco roman wrestlers... So I got to try many many different styles and the art itself is supposed to constantly adapt and grow and be focused around fighting in the street.
I was also a close combat instructor in the marines which is a system designed by the Marines in conjunction with many of the ultimate fighters....
After all that I can say this:
Tae Kwon Do, Karate, AIKIDO, and especially fucking lame-ass Tai Chi is useless in a street fight and I mean totally fucking USELESS.
First and foremost TKD and Karate are flashy and used for long range attacks... When was the last time a fight start with two guys squaring off from 10 feet away? I mean seriously... Fuck that shit, I have never seen it happen.
Aikido... Ok Steven Seagal

Aikido works great when someone winds up, and throws a nice haymaker at you or charges you... When it doesn't work for shit is when anyone with ANY boxing ability is taking quick jabs at you or its a grappler and they just get in close, hang on and use their head, knees or elbows against you.
Aikido is flashy bullshit plain and simple.
I can't believe you fags actually think that Tai Chi actually works in a fight? When was the last time you saw an 80 year old Chinese guy win the ultimate fighting challenge?
The last time I checked a Tai Chi master can somehow not be lifted off the ground if he doesn't want to be... How fucking great Master Cain..... Now lets see what you can do when I put you in a fucking choke hold or take a shot across your old ass grill.
The only thing more useless than all these martial arts is Kung Fu... Especially whatever styles indo studies. Kung Fu is especially stupid because it turns you into a skinny black man who feels obliged to post worthless gangster raps on everquest message boards.
Bottom line... If you want to fight real people, in real situations and win... Study boxing and jujitsu/grappling... Then (big surprise here) Get in a ring and try the shit out with the most minimum of rules and see how it works.
Real fights aren't pretty and never flashy... All you shit talkers should go watch a few UFC's from the first 10 years and see just how crappy all these guys faired that study the hollywood bullshit fighting styles you all think are cool.... When the UFC first started they had a slew of faggots in their spiffy uniforms get in the ring and try to pull their Jet Li/Chuck Norris shit and get assfucked by boxers and grapplers. Now they don't even show up for UFC... They just sit in their "gi's" in their "dojo's" talking smack with their other karate master friends about how they would beat Joyce Gracie's ass while taking breaks to play shinobi and debating whether tom cruise really was a samurai or not.

Its amazing what insanity and a big rock will accomplish in a street fight over any person who is trained. By the way, this thread has gone from suck straight to blow.

You've got to be DAMN good with Martial Arts in order for it to be effective. Most fights (in real life) aren't like the ending scenes of Rocky - people don't typically stand toe to toe and exchange blows... there's usually a couple of fists exchanged and both parties end up on the ground.
I boxed in the Army and wrestled in both college and high school... if I had to defend myself I know I will more than likely have to resort to my wrestling skills more so than I will my boxing skills. But, I think violence (outside of sports and movies) is for retards who are to stupid to settle matters through other means.

I used the parking lot ground to my advantage in the one brawl I got into. I don't like throwing punches. Aryylas can back me up on this too. I sent this kid Pedro D'almeida to the hospital with head injuries and abrasions on his face. (I was smashing his head into the ground and rubbing his face into it like a dog that just pissed on your carpet)
Anyone who has been into a fight knows that punching someone's face fucks your hands up. Cheekbones are like steel and I'm not fucking my hands up for that. Body shots are more effective anyways.
The only self-defense I was ever taught was from my father who in-turn learned from the USMC...I don't know what they teach for the most part but it is fast and effective and doesn't fuck around with flashy bullshit.

It only hurts your hand if you have to punch them more than once in the face.

Face, or pretty much anywhere on the skull, it doesn't matter. I fucked my knuckles up on the back of that kids head. I couldn't type for a few days on my right hand. I know better now.
That's the same brawl I got hit with a bat in
