Why the FUCK do you continue to defend BR on this front? It's fucking ridiculous. It's a clusterfuck, pretty much any sane person would agree.

None of my predictions could have taken in to account a $620m payout to Warner. Even Toshiba themselves were left dumbfounded as they clearly had Warner in their camp all the way up until the day of the announcement. Congrats, your format won. Unfortunately, I can't afford to keep pace with your $600 players and 61" 1080p displays so yes, I will be stuck with DVD. I hope for your sake the rest of the world can find $3500 in their couch so they too can enjoy the benefits of BR or you'll be sitting on a "dead format" as well.

You can get a 1080p westy 37 for under 1000 and you can get a ps3 for 400. Amazon sells Bluray discs for 15-30 a pop. If you don't want a PS3 and want a "real" BluRay player, you can get one for 350 from some no namer brand called Sony. Sorry Toss, HDDVD sucks because it's inferior.

A 37" piece of shit Westinghouse TV will give you little to no benefit from HD media over an upconverted DVD unless you are sitting 5 ft away and even at that distance it's going to be marginal. I'll pass, thanks.

The LCD's are all made by a handful of companies. They all perform about the same. The point is, the screen is too small to get a worthwhile benefit out of HD media especially not if it's going to cost $1450. Save your money, buy a 47"+ one when the come down in price and a $99 BR player and now you have a good value.

Its over for HD-DVD. Best Buy(Recommending), Netflix, Walmart announcing Blu-Ray exclusive this whole week. Rumor has it that Toshiba might be dropping HD-DVD as well, this format war was stupid thanks to Toshiba and Microshit.

I'm just curious but how much stock did you had in Toshiba, Tossica?

No stock. I just wanted to watch HD media on the format I thought offered the most features and quality for the least amount of money. I don't want to have to buy Sony's game console in order to watch HD movies. Some day the Blu-Ray standalones may get there but I think it will be too late by the time they do.

There is liking a format, and championing a cause. You clearly were pushing and wanting HD DVD to win moreso than just an objective consumer, Toss.

Yep. I'd personally LOVE to see Sony's gaming division go under.

HD-DVD was the obvious more consumer friendly format and had the best chance of actually replacing DVD as the media standard. Sony pushed their half finished format out the door two years too early, spent billions of dollars to buy or woo studios to their "side" and used their usual bullshit hype in order to take away my choice as a consumer instead of just joining up with the DVD forum to collaborate on the DVD's successor. I honestly never thought people would be stupid enough to buy in to all of Sony's bullshit but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Buy a $600 game console to play HD movies? WTF? What kind of retard would do that? Err...

I'll say it yet again, congrats on buying the more expensive, inferior, consumer UNfriendly format! Enough people out there are obviously as stupid as you are, joined you in your stupid parade and can now reap the benefits of a market with no competition! Oh well, I mean, no competition besides Toshiba's DVD format which still owns over 99% of the home video market and HD downloads which are rapidly picking up market share.

Sony knocked HD-DVD out of the ring but the "war" is far from over.

Fuck Sony.

Still haven't had a single problem with any Bluray disc or product and for the record I bought the system for the games and the movie thing was a bonus. I just don't understand how you can bash with "Consumer UNFriendly" and back Microsoft. That's like saying "smoking is bad for you, have some coke". Either way, it's not my job to police and "back" companies based on history, proprietary this, format that. I always just get whoever puts out the best product. IMO, Sony has always put out quality products.

The war may not be over, but only if you thought Custer had a fighting chance:

Wal-Mart dumps HD DVDs to back Blu-ray

The Nuclear Bomb has been dropped. HD DVD is fucked and gone. Good riddance to a lesser johnnie come lately format that should never have been started.

Who are the retards that picked a format backed by greedy fuckers and now will have a dead format? Blu-Ray will replace DVD, and HD download is FAR from being mainstream. I've had broadband for years and I still do not like to download gigs of files even though I do. It takes forever. Do you think everyone will have the patience to download gigs of files instead of going out to buy it? Now what happens when you're out of space to download, do you think the average person would know how to replace the hard drive? And then there are people who like to have a hard copy or the ease of use by just inserting the disc and hit the play button.

Seriously, are you related to Rob Enderle or have stock in M$? Its funny how HD-DVD loses and all of a sudden people jump off the HD Media bandwagon and all jump on the digital distribution bandwagon like its going to kill off Blu-Ray.

Your powers of prediction leave you no room for saying either jack or shit, Toss.

Bluray will take off and replace DVD, for collectors. Even more now that the market isn't fractioned.

I don't think blu-ray will reach the DVD level of penetration

I still think downloadable content will end up with that crown

I didn't care if HD-DVD or blu-ray won, just that something won, and quickly

You are thinking just movies. PS3 games, PC Games, other media, and eventually 360 games and media will be on Bluray discs. It will be the successor to DVDs, just as DVDs were the successor to CD ROMs.

nope, everything will be downloadable content

nintendo is releasing an official flashcart for the DS so you can just download content and put it on yourself

look at the HD advance for the PS2, you can just download ps2/ps1 games and load it onto the hard drive yourself

360, ps3 and wii all have internet connectivity and allow you to download demos, trailers, etc etc

it's not as far off as you think

HD-DVD had a chance because you could buy one disc and play it in all of your players. HD on one side and SD on the other. For that reason alone it had a chance to replace DVD. They could have stopped manufacturing DVD's all together and converted all pressing plants to HD-DVD and made combo discs. Consumers could buy the HD version even if they didn't yet own an HD player and still be able to enjoy the SD version until they could afford a new player. This isn't possible for Blu-Ray and if you think everyone is going to buy HD TV's and Blu-Ray players for every room that they might want to watch movies, you are being foolish.

Thanks to Sony, we now don't have the combo disc option so I hope everyone that wants to watch HD media has the money to replace ALL of their TV's and players with compatible equipment. Otherwise, HD on demand is the answer for the average consumer.

Hey, when and if BR players finally get all the features HD-DVD offered and get cheap enough I'll buy one but for the average consumer, the appeal just isn't there.

On Demand is already here, but the issue is people like to shop and buy. It's the reason DVDs have done so well despite Cable and pay per view already being widespread.

Plus, HD on demand is limited. Owning a Blu-Ray disc means one can pull it out and play any Pixar movie for ones kids on that Sony 61" TV anytime. People want that. I realize a few people have ludicrous storage units at home, but HD takes up a lot of space. Each Blu-ray disc is 50 Gig double sided.

Again, it's more than just movies. In the future, all media will end up on Blu-ray. This is a good thing, and will end up being better for consumers. It's a better technology with more widespread support and a lot of good features.

The price will come down and adaptation will speed up. Plus, the 360 will be there pretty soon, too.

Moving from one easily damaged piece of plastic to the next isn't a real upgrade.

We need to ditch physical media, fast.

I'd have to say that a plastic disk has a lot more durability, portability, and probably another ability that I can't even think about then whatever media you plan to store them with on your computer (hard drive).

What's more likely for the average consumer:

1) Let the kids watch Cars on Blu-Ray over and over and over again in your $$$ home theater.
or
2) Buy a Blu-Ray player and HDTV for the kids room.
or
3) Buy the DVD version of the kids movie so they can play it on their 20" CRT TV and $29 DVD player in their room or on the $79 portable DVD player in the car.

Blu-Ray = niche market.
