Yeah, I dunno, I think exponents are debatable for this one since they do represent multiple use of the same number (ie: 4^6 = 4x4x4x4x4x4).
Squares and exponents are definitely arithmetic though, it's just shorthand for long multiplications... ;p

Arithmetic is basic mathematics: Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division.
When you get into squaring and fractions, etc that is really no longer arithmetic but straight mathematics.
Yes, it's semantics.
