Wikipedia re-asserted facts I already knew regarding Yokoi. You made blanket statements saying I was wrong yet refuse to believe anything that could potentially say I was correct. Look up Gunpei Yokoi, read about how he, along with Miyamoto brought console gaming to where it is today.

Even if for some reason you just don't like Nintendo, it's a very interesting read, and just as a video game lover you should enjoy it.

I did look it up you cock monkey, what do you think I was quoting?

you called it a major innovation

it's not

Not sure why you have to resort to calling me a cock monkey, I didn't attack you and we're just talking about video games.

I didn't call it major, just an innovation, and it really is.

Nintendo has never been willing to risk losing money on the hardware so they have always done things on the cheap, cutting features, sacrificing quality, etc to guarantee a small profit on the hardware to go along with their massive profits on the software. Every game that's made for a Nintendo system goes on their own, proprietary media which guarantees them more profit.

Smart business model and excellent marketing.

They have been selling pretty much the same games with slightly enhanced graphics and gameplay for the last 20+ years and making a killing at it.

I agree on cost cutting extraneous features like DVD compatibility, but not on quality of the actual parts. Since the NES, every Nintendo console has been built much more soundly especially when comparing them to their competitors. PlayStation 1, 2, 3 have had numerous defects in the hardware, as has Xbox 1,2 -- SNES, N64,GameCube,Wii have had very little defects in comparison. All four of those systems are still working for me. Whereas I went through 4 PS1's, and 2 XBox's alone.

I also would disagree about the same gameplay. It's true they generally have the same franchises, but the gameplay has changed drastically. Mario, Zelda, and Metroid are just three examples. Especially in the case of Mario and Zelda on N64, ushering in the fully-3D platforming era.

compare the repair rate on Xbox's to nintendo's then come back and say it's nintendo that's sacrificing quality

Nintendo is one of the biggest reasons to blame video games being in the $50+ price range.

I remember for a while where $80+ wasn't unsual for a NES game

The Xbox also offered 10x the processing power, a hard drive, DVD playback, network connectivity, etc so yes, the failure rate is probably going to be much higher than the Nintendo. Look at the failure rate on the average PC from any large manufacturer and I bet it's going to be similar.

50% failure rate? Those PC companies'd be going out of business.

Only MS can leverage their monopoly and lose billions on two generations of gaming consoles.. Thankfully, they won't be able to corner the market and crank up the price, a la DOS and Office...

50% my ass. I'd be surprised if the number of complaints is higher than 10% which is still ridiculously high BUT at least they are making good on it and extending warranties for 3 years. Sony fucked everyone on the PS1 when lasers were going bad left and right.

They've made 2 of the best consoles ever made. Why do I care if they are losing money or not?

The quality games keep coming and I can enjoy high definition movies on my 360 AND use it as a high def media extender for about a third of the price of an equivalent gaming PC+HD-DVD player. The only similar value is the PS3 but the lack of games is a serious blow to Sony and for now the best buy is clearly the 360. The Wii is not even in the same category as the 360 and PS3 but that's not to say that it's not an entertaining console, it's just a different type of gaming. Both markets can exist simultaneously and Nintendo was smart to find that niche and not try to compete on a hardware level with Sony and MS. I think the people that wanted a 360 or PS3 and bought a Wii instead because of the price are still saving their money for the big boys and playing with their WiiWiis (ha!) while they save. Most "gamers" will own both or all 3 while the casual players who wouldn't have bought a 360 or PS3 anyways will go with Nintendo alone.

The bigger problem as has been said is the 360 is just a piece of shit.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/13/techn ... ei=5087%0A

Microsoft, has declined to say what is causing some of its Xbox 360 to stop working, or how many machines have been affected. It has set aside $1.1 billion for repairs, a figure that suggests to industry analysts that the problem could affect a third of the 11.6 million 360s already in the hands of consumers.

The most likely explanation of where the engineers went wrong is that the 360s are poorly designed to deal with the intense heat generated by game play and that computer chips and other electronics may be popping off the motherboard, said Richard Doherty, an analyst with the Envisioneering Group, a technology assessment and market research firm.

xbox does seem to run pretty hot

imo, the 360 doesn't seem as well designed as the original xbox

Fortunately I haven't had any problems with mine yet. I don't do any 14 hour gaming sessions with it and it's in a wide open rack hanging on the wall in my basement so I have no heat issues. I have about 15 friends with 360's and one of them had to send his back for the red ring syndrome.

I got my x360 a little over a year ago. I purchased the Pelican Fan Stand with it. I've never had 1 problem ever.

doesn't it strike you as a bit suspect that you felt you needed to buy an external cooler for it tho?

I'm not denying there are heat issues with it, I just haven't experienced them and as long as MS has acknowledged the problem and is fixing it, what's the big deal? If you buy a 360, you are guaranteed for 3 years.

6 months with the package that includes a year of XBox live Gold or whatever. Not 3 years.

Xbox 360 Warranty Coverage Expanded

REDMOND, Wash. — July 5, 2007 —Microsoft Corp. today announced that it will expand its global Xbox 360™ warranty coverage. Any Xbox 360 customer who experiences a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights will now be covered by a three year warranty from date of purchase. All other existing Xbox 360 warranty policies remain in place.

As a result of what Microsoft views as an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles, the company conducted extensive investigations into potential sources of general hardware failures. Having identified a number of factors which can cause general hardware failures indicated by three red flashing lights on the console, Microsoft has made improvements to the console and is enhancing its Xbox 360 warranty policy for existing and new customers.

Microsoft stands behind its products and is taking responsibility to repair or replace any Xbox 360 console that experiences the “three flashing red lights” error message within three years from time of purchase free of charge, including shipping costs. Microsoft will take a $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion pre-tax charge to earnings for the quarter ended June 30, 2007 for anticipated costs under its current and enhanced Xbox 360 policies.

"The majority of Xbox 360 owners are having a great experience with their console and have from day one. But, this problem has caused frustration for some of our customers and for that, we sincerely apologize," said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division. "We value our community tremendously and look at this as an investment in our customer base. We look forward to great things to come."

For any customer who has previously paid for repair expenses related to the three flashing lights error message on the Xbox 360 console, Microsoft will retroactively reimburse them.

At 2:30 p.m. PDT today, Microsoft will hold a teleconference for financial analysts and investors with Robbie Bach, president of Entertainment and Devices, Chris Liddell, senior vice president and chief financial officer, and Frank Brod, corporate vice president and chief accounting officer to discuss today’s announcement. The call will be available for playback beginning approximately one hour after the conclusion of the call through 5 p.m. PDT on Thursday, July 12. To access the playback, U.S. residents can dial +1-866-363-4143, and those outside the United States can dial +1-203-369-0210. An audio webcast of the conference call will also be made available at the Investor Relations site at http://www.microsoft.com/msft.

Xbox 360 customers with questions should visit http://www.xbox.com.

general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights

That is the only thing they extended the warranty for.

There are various other issues with the X360 that occur.
