If people have fun playing it, then it is a sucecssful game, regardless of whether or not it is "hard core" enough.

The franchise certainly has made MS money hand over fist, so it must have SOMETHING going for it. I mean, the market has repeatedly proved that it will not support incredibly hyped games if they suck at their core. See: Daikatana. See: Vanguard. etc. etc. etc.
