Different places slaughter their animals in different ways. Some of them are EXACTLY as inhumane as clubbing baby seals. It is partly to do with the cute factor of baby seals, for sure. I would far prefer all animals be slaughtered "humanely" but the definition of "humane" varies from human to human.
The most humane slaughter I ever saw was done by a college friend's uncle. Each year their family raised a cow to eat. She was basically a family pet, which I thought a bit odd, but everyone knew what she was for. When it came time to slaughter her, Daddy walked right up to her, petting her and telling her what a good girl she was, and then shot her in the head. I was appalled! But upon further reflection, Petunia died instantly with someone who had given her nothing but love her entire life. I've never been shot through the head but I would assume that when you die that fast, you don't feel much pain. And when I had my first Petunia Steak, it was the most delicious steak I'd ever eaten. ALL their hand-raised meat was that good.
The Baby Seal Clubbing is easy to see it's not kind to the animals, but I'd be wrong if I thought all other butcheries were kinder. The entire meat trade is pretty disgusting, if you look into it much you may decide to be a vegetarian. I did, for a number of years. Now, I go out of my way to find the most humane butchers, but it's not easy to determine who is which.

there's actually anatomical reason for why petunia tasted so good
adrenaline tastes pretty terrible, and when an animal's last moments are engulfed in pain, terror, and fear, a lot of that adrenaline stays in the muscle and sours the meat
instant death that occurs before the adrenal glands have a chance to kick in prevents all that
= good steak

Fuck PETA, animals are below us on the food chain. End of story.

I wonder what baby seal tastes like~ I bet its teeeender!
I watched some thing one time in a class my freshman year on the slaughterhouses for McDonalds. Was pretty wild, they had them make their way down the conveyor line, then some kind of little bolt just pierces them straight through the head, supposedly killing them instantly. But then it was sayin there are times the cow may twitch and the bolt misses the kill spot, so it ends up having to do it again and again. Sucks for cow, oh well, people are being fed by it.
Ive cut a couple deer's throats before, when someone or myself have missed a kill shot, to put them out of their misery. Theyve got some tough ass throats, youve got to SAW that shit open. And yeah, I like telling that to PETA people or anti hunting people, it gets a fun reaction on their faces

cows and pigs get a bolt (like a rivet) to the head. there's nothing about stunning before hand
I've been in the abbatoir while it's happening
there's no difference between killing seal cubs and young beef (veal)
it's just the fact that people see the seals as "Cute" that it's suddenly a horrendous offense to nature
there are different practices, sure. some butchers stun, our cows in WI were shot directly in the head. there are some butchers more humane than others, and like Ndaara said, the entire trade is pretty brutal, but there are a LOT more humane butcheries for cows and pigs than there are for the seals - likely due to the fact that it's done on a larger scale. the point is that if you look at the ratio of humane livestock killing to humane seal killing, there's a huge difference. the inhumane treatment of the cows and pigs isn't legal - in canada, seal clubbing is.
tell me something - if I gave you two choices to die, would you prefer to take a quick sure shot to the brain or would you rather me take a baseball bat and try my hand at bashing your head in and risk skinning you alive because I'm too lazy to make sure you're not breathing anymore? i'd be surprised if you couldn't see the difference in those two practices.
I think seals and cows are equally as cute, so that has nothing to do with it. We'll have to agree to disagree - I was just shocked you acted like it was news to you that someone thought it was inhumane.
PS Harrison, there's not a single breathing organism in the world that's lower than
you. perhaps someone will do us all a justice and bash your skull in. If you wanna go ahead and expedite the process, try stepping outside your internet toughguy persona and spouting off your nonsense in front of live people - it'd be appreciated.

Nope, PETA and its members are all worthless wastes of space.
You're an ignorant windbag if you place animals above people.
Most women are lumped into this category of uselessness because they are 100% incapable of looking at anything logically without emotion. Everything not human is here for our use. We've evolved and gotten to the top of the food chain. EVERYTHING is here for us, fur, food, entertainment, etc.
Hippies are fucking stupid. Congratulations for placing animals above people who actually deserve your sympathy. Feed the homeless? Fuck that I'll adopt a cute cuddly kitten! Morons.

I wouldn't have the memories I do now. So "I" would be a chicken and clearly not capable of understanding my situation. Nor would it really be me at all in that sense.
PETA is a fucking joke.
People who support animal rights believe that animals are not ours to use for food, clothing, entertainment, experimentation, or any other purpose and that animals deserve consideration of their best interests regardless of whether they are cute, useful to humans, or endangered and regardless of whether any human cares about them at all (just as a mentally challenged human has rights even if he or she is not cute or useful and even if everyone dislikes him or her).
Comparing an animal to a handicapped human is fucking despicable. Hippies are so fucking dumb it's disgusting.
If PETA had its way we wouldn't be able to own pets either. These fucking crackpots find it offensive to keep a pet in "captivity". (if they don't they're not following their own LISTED guidelines)
You may choose not to eat animals or use them for any purpose at all. Everyone of course has this right to choose and no one should ever be able to take that right away from you. But don't you fucking dare try to say that anything else is wrong by some arbitrary designation fabricated by a bunch of fruitbat hippie retards or try to remove the right to do otherwise from other people. That is where you become an idiot.
If I want to club a seal to sell its pelt, no one should be able to stop me from doing so. Certainly not some whiny bitches for that matter. If it was a disgustingly ugly creature it wouldn't even be a blip on the radar of you illogical twatsacks.
Man I love bashing these faggots when they set up booths at concerts too. Waaaah, fish have feelings...don't eat seafood. Fuck you, we're omnivores. We eat meat because it's fucking yummy.
Save your sympathy for people. At least SOME of them deserve it.

I know that people get all up in arms about it
my point is simply that it's not any different than any other kind of animal hunt
just for whatever reason, people are all up in arms about the baby seals
animal is an animal, and I'm sure however they're killed it sucks for that individual animal
all I'm saying is that it's not any different from anything else, and it strikes me as odd that people protest the killing of seals as they wear leather shoes/jackets/wallets/purses/belts and eat steak/lobster/veal/venison/pork/bacon/whatever
hypocrite~

So... Are you saying that death is death and it doesn't matter if it's long, drawn out and painful, or short and as painless as possible?

my point was that seals are killed the same as cows/sheep/etc etc
it's just the supposed cute factor that make people activists about them for some reason
Don't get me wrong, I am definitely not for people intentionally killing animals painfully, or cruelly
I just wouldn't put the seal hunt in that category

Location location location. The biggest thing the seal hunt has going against it is, it's all (mostly?) within one country: Canada. That makes a nice tidy target.
It kinda sucks, in a way, because there are atrocities committed in your backyard that you may not be aware of, because you are focusing your attention on Canada's beastly practices. (You in the generic sense, not directed at any person in particular. I am guilty of this too, of course.)

again we'll have to agree to disagree then
bludgeoning is not the same as a bullet or bolt straight to the brain to me.
I get that seals need to be hunted for population purposes.. it's the same as the deer up north. I hate bow season, though, because the risk of inaccuracy is so much higher.
It doesn't make me a hypocrite to want animals to be killed humanely. We get so up in arms about human rights that we give murderers/pedophiles/rapists the right to die by falling asleep, thanks to years of whining about cruel and unusual punishment for monsters like these. For me, if a human would suffer intolerably by the same means used to kill the animal, it's not something that should be used on another living being.
In the human world, beating someone to death with a club would be regarded as much more cruel and demented than shooting them in the head - for me the same logic applies, no matter what you're killing.
I'm not totally against the seal hunt because I get why it's done like I said. I'm against the means that are used and approved to get it done.

Ash when you have a 260 lb eskimo cracking a 10 month old seal over the head with a louisville slugger, i will guarantee you that those things are either
a) dying to the very first blow instantly (like being shot in the head) or
b) they're knocked unconcious instantly and probably brain dead (there fore not feeling anything either)
They dont go clubbing them because they like to smash small animals, the fact that they are on the artic shelf with an average temperature of like minus 20- minus 30 degrees celsius probably puts a hamper on them using a 12 guage, and since handguns are illegal 100% of the time in canada you're be kinda screwed unless you like to walk around on an iceberg with a metal long barrelled gun tucked down your pant leg until you need to use it every time.

i mean when we slaughtered chickens at our farm we would back up a truck to the chicken pen then get about 4 or 5 people that just run around the pen you grab a chicken take a HUGE butcher knife slit it's throat and toss the body into the back of the truck where it will run around for another 15 20 seconds and when we have a truckload of chickens it's off to the packing plant. However i dont see there being any huge PETA movement to save and protect our chickens. I guess we have to start making seal farms where we have 1000 seals sitting in a fenced in pen and just march them straight into a packing plant like cows and chickens right.

honestly, you're just been inundated with the negative propaganda surrounding the hunt. it's exactly as humane as any other kind of hunting, or killing of animals for the sake of meat/pelts/whatever
sure, like any other industry there's going to be the case where some dude sucks at his job, and a seal will take a few whacks to die
happens killing cows and pigs too

My bank account is restored, my Amex balance was cleared, my Visa's were cleared, I have all new cards and I got ganked a total of 909.84 and weeks of my time and hours of security verification for anything I have to do concerning credit in the future. My PI is saying he thinks it happened when I did my taxes because my info is only there and he noticed some possible "unprofessional" work rituals like leaving files around, computer screens open. When he went to check my file the comp screen was turned to him, the guy got up to grab a cup of water and my PI was able to see 3 other peoples socials and names. He thinks someone may have hacked them or just was in the right place at the right time. Also, they keep a copy of all my submitted records in their office. They didn't inform me of that. They told me that everything I submit would get sent to the IRS and that they only have invoices of what I did with them, not the actual documents again. All in all, ID theft sucks.
