We'd have to raid Efreeti and fire giants though since we all have 3 year old equipment.

As dumbed down as EQ has become, we could probably do better with 3 year old equip than some time equipped groups...

Ah, but levels and chars are easy. Its hanging out with friends and doing crazy shit that was cool.

Kyo is dead too. :( I have a 50ish rogue I was relevelling for fun. Took a few days to get there with Ginz, its so pitifully easy to level now.

Yeah, I tried to re-start a shaman around spring of 2002... I think... It was before PoP and stuff. Right after the moon expansion was getting old and tired :) I think I leveled him to 55 or so. I had bought some druid char for $50.00 and was two box PL'ing. God, I cant even remember the character's name now :) Somehow or another, once I got to around 56 w/ a few AA points - it was just the same old shit.

From what I understand, there are now just macro programs to level you :) you can start at like level 5 and level while you're at work with some automated scripts :) Apparently the entire API for EQ has been cracked wide open now.

When I think about new MMO's that come out... I really hope that the macroers and cheaters dont get thier greedy hands on it... But its basically inevitable. If you build it, they will come.

Why didnt anyone tell me this? I was busy powering with Ginz, when I coulda been on auto pilot. Bastards!

As far as new games, until we get something really revolutionary, if I can squeeze a few months of fun out of them, I'm happy.

WOW appears to be EQ2. EQ2 appears to be SWG in space. SWG seems to be coming along, and their space expansion has me interested.

Warhammer Online looks kickass, thats the only one I'm really excited for, but I'm not sure if its anywhere near release.

Looking at the anemic populations for Horizons and Shadowbane I think it takes more than a lot of Press releases and hype.

I played a little beta WoW and I was really into it at first, but know it's kinda lame. Not even sure if I will buy it.

I can't imagine that WoW or EQ2 will being back that 'pre-SoV-EQ-feeling'

I guess its kinda like smoking pot or whatever. Its never as good as when you first start. That first few months of smokin' pot is a blast. You actually DO feel 'comfortably numb'. After that first few months, its just a grind to stay high :) It doesnt really matter WHAT kinda buds you get. Kind bud, 4 way, swag, crippies, whatever... You never regain that first few months of getting high feeling...

Oh well, I quit smokin' pot and I quit playin MMO's :) Took me long enough on both fronts. To be such an intelligent race, we humans are a bunch of dumbasses :)

It's really too bad too. Smokin' pot gets you 'the fellowship of the weed', and playing mmo's gets ya 'a guild' or 'a tribe' or 'a clan' or whatever the fuck whichever game calls it. :)

GIMMIE GTA:SA on PC now rockstar!

Anyone remember Earth and Beyond? HA! Is that fucker still around? Great idea... NO CONTENT.

The more I think about EQ being victorious in the Kunark times... the more I just think that there was so much DISTINCT content.

I'll NEVER forget solusek B... or Lower Guk... or even Permafrost. Certainly not old sebellis and city of mist and karnors castle. Ill sure as hell NEVER forget PoF or PoH. Ill be 80 fucking years old thinking about some bullshit video game I played when I was in my mid 20's... And those will be the memories that remain. LAH! Live Side King! 3 spawn! Window Room! Chef! Disco 1 and 2! blah blah blah :)

All of these other MMO's I've played... Nothing is distinct enough to make a lasting impression on my memory :(

EDIT - P.S. SWG has miles and miles and miles after mile after mile of randomly generated terrain and POI's... Whee what fun. Anarchy Online? All of the zones bleed together and the only thing people do are team missions until 200, then they go do those rock things in shadowlands... OVER AND OVER. Its just not fun. EQ at least had some creative people driving the content for fucks sakes.

I didn't read the rest of this and I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet or not, but play a MUD if you want all that, Lyion.

I'm not disagreeing with what you say because I support all those decisions too, but you're just never going to see a MMORPG like that. Video games are built for people that like to look at pretty things and not worry about things like your character permanently dying or your allignment or your deities or the way you talk.

I think the RP server was kind of nice because it made you perma-/role so no one could see your level. Most of the people I met actually did roleplay, too.

But, you're just never going to get the immersion of a fantasy experience when you have to deal with graphics. You can type an emote out in EQ but your guy still just stands there.

I'm a long-time mud player and I vastly prefer playing those over playing a MMORPG.

MMORPG's are equipment, level, and "bad-ass" dependant.

In the MUD I play, you "level up" by practicing your skills; not by gaining experience. This does mean you have to go and kill a lot, but there is a threat because there's a random chance every time you die that you're not going to come back. And when you do die, your corpse sits there and you become a ghost until one of a myriad of resurrecting classes decides they'll help you. So your corpse will get robbed or whatever if you can't get a rez.

There's an overwhelming amount of depth-of-play and imagery in a MUD. It's almost more descriptive than a video game because you imagine everything you see, rather than see what the developers thought it should look like.

With a MUD, you can make it whatever you want. You can make yourself whoever you want despite what level you are. You can be level 15 and be the king of some city and no one will touch you because they know that if they do, a shit load of people are gonna go kill them back.

I suggest you try MUDding if you're looking for the level of depth you're describing. It's been nothing but rewarding for me since I quit MMORPGs.

i had no idea SWG was based on skills, instead of classes. i can't say if i'll be playing it for years, but it definitely has my attention atm. and the space expansion looks jizztastic. they're pretty much slapping x-wing vs tie fighter onto a mmo.

they need more 'twitch' based mmo's out there imo. none of this whack bats for hours to gain skill enough to hit an orc. Planetside has the right idea, combat that takes real skill, not targeting something, pressing 'A', and praying to the dice gods.

a space based mmo would be cool, i didn't play earth and beyond, but did try EVE. they took a cool idea and completely fucked it over by doing the press 'A' and pray routine for combat. maybe for a battleship with loads of turrets, but with small ships you should be able to dog fight, and dart around capital ships avoiding fire. it's like these developers are slaves to the skill based system >_<

They're slaves to bandwith restrictions. It takes 100 times less bandwith for the autoattack series of commands that get sent back and forth from you to the server than it does for you to actually control what you're doing in real time.

That's why, unless there's some breakthrough in compression technology or maybe in bandwith/latency, you won't see a player skill based combat system. At least not on the scale of 3000+ people per server. Hell, even though servers are split up between many actual boxes, think how much cpu usage there would be for over 1000 people fighting FPS style at the same time?

I wish it were possible. It's just not right now.

Fuck MMO games. 96% of the population suck anyhow. I would be happy with playing a game with the 4% that don't suck.

I've never played planetside Zanchief. But could I? Half of the point of an mmo is the ability for a wide demographic of people to play.

I have trouble finding Battlefield Vietnam or Farcry servers that I can play on. And there are thousands of them. With 3meg cable! Would I be able to play on the 10 planetside servers that are probably half way across the country? I'm not spending the money to find out.

I haven't played it either, but I was just pointing out that their interface is a little more complicated than auto-attack.

I never played Planetside, but is it really a 1000+ user per server MMO/FPS? If so, how do they recover thier bandwidth costs? 14.95/month for a person that plays 8 to 12 hours a day (the power gamer) probably barely pays for thier 30kbit/s usage? Ive known a few people that played planetside, but they didnt seem like the powergamer type :)

I don't think planetside gets more than 200 people per zone. Granted that is a lot but they really worked their network technology to the max imho.

If you ever have the oppurtunity to see Sony's server farm I've heard it's impressive. They have one building dedicated to just the EQ servers. My former boss worked on an integration with with Sony pictures and got a nice tour through their buildings.

Earth and Beyond closed shop last summer I believe it was. EA is cutthroat about anything losing profit.

I'd definitely agree that EQ was dumbed down. I started up last April again and two boxed with an old cleric (Macey) until I got to 55. It was pretty sad though as I never discovered KEI until I hit 46. That overpowered the game quite a bit. Then they nerfed it. There is supposedly macro bots that will heal, buff and even mimic socializing in a group setting.

Daoc's the same way though. My co-worker and I each ran 3 toons, tank + healer and another bot. 3 laptops each. Playing as one player was just not a challenge. Frontiers comes out this week if anyone is interested though. I may re-activate for a month and check it out.
