They have standards.

The reasoning for charter schools is for choice, innovation, competition, and programs based on community needs.

Options are generally a good thing.

If they have standards then they are placing a greater burden on the rest of the public schools.

Sure, just like a competing store in the same town causes a greater burden, and disallows a single entity from having its way. However, it also drives better service, innovation, and results. As you have more stores, the better ones thrive, and the end consumer wins.

I'm all for this burden.

That's fine, except it's not like a store at all since people need to go to school.

So the smart and privileged get a better education, that's all well and dandy, but the ones who need more help get an even worse education than they're already getting and get completely fucked over.

That doesn’t even factor in Arlos' point which is completely valid. Do you think it's fair to have a Muslim school, teaching things that you might find morally questionable, on your dime?

We have a similar problem in Canada (or at least in Ontario) because we have a separate school board for public and catholic students. Both have funding from the government but the Catholic board has more money since they get additional funding from the church, so public schools are turning to shit for a number of reasons and parents are doing everything they can to get kids into catholic schools to keep them away from "dangerous minorities".

It's bullshit and we should just fold up the catholic board and combine both, but that's not going to happen.

Most public school teachers are morons (most). Of all the professions that require a college education, teachers collectively score the lowest on their SAT and ACTs than any other. That's a fact.

Homeschooling isn't bad. You can always enroll your kid in outside social activities (cub scouts, the YMCA and tons of other things) for them to get the social interaction they need to develop.

Most public schools are trash where indoctrination takes priority and education is some where down on the list... Kids learn math/science, reading and english AFTER they've been brainwashed that being an individual is bbbaaaddd and after they've learned that being successful and owning your own property is bad as well.

I fucking hate public school teachers... well they're pretty good in bed. Most of the ones I've been with have been freaks.

Really? You weren't taught to conform and not stick out? You weren't taught that actually knowing the answers and letting the other kids know got you teased? You weren't taught that bathrooms could be a dangerous place? You weren't taught that simply wearing the wrong brand of clothes could cause you months of misery?

Doing your best and being who you are is NOT encouraged by school 'peers'. Blending in and not making waves is pretty much the status quo...unless making waves is deemed 'cool'...then it's ok.

I have never been worried going to any bathroom at any time in any place. I've never felt like I should wear a certain brand of clothes, or I should have a certain hair length or anything like that. I don't know about anybody else, but thats not my school experience at all

Sure kids pick on people who look different, they do that even when they aren't at school. It's certainly not behavior the teachers accept let alone ENCOURAGE.

Considering the average American high school kid can't spell America, let alone find it on a glode.... yeah... I'd say pretty much any country with running water has a better public school than the US of A.

This depends greatly on where you went to school.
Um, she's not that far off from my elementary school and high school. Middle school was fine, but it was in a different part of town.

Ahh..but that's the thing. I wasn't talking about curriculum...I was talking about the 'socialization' kids get.

At no other time in their lives are people segregated by age. As an adult I have friends of all ages. While in school that was frowned upon. There's no other purpose to pigeon-holing kids by age than to teach them conformity with other kids their age.

It's a ridiculous way of doing things, because kids the same age can be on vastly different levels of maturity and comprehension.
