What's your "plat"? I think not engaging in the PvP aspect of the game really is a shame. It's so well done. The battles can be really intense and coming up with a good PvP build toon was really fun.

Gwyn's the easiest boss in the game. Try using a bow. He never even hits me

Toss: Platinum Trophy on PS3
Drem: I found him hard on both play throughs because he's so aggressive. I didn't really find any of the bosses all that difficult to be honest aside from him. Four Kings were much harder on NG+, but I still won on my second attempt. They just provide to many opportunities to heal. Gwyn I couldn't get a handle on though. I killed him on the second try on my first playthough, but I felt I got lucky and didn't really understand his attack patterns. In NG+ I needed to learn them. It took me a long time though, and had to kite him around and wait for him to either kick me or try and grab me and I'd counter. How do you avoid his attacks with a bow? Just keep rolling away and attacking when he's recovering?
Toss: I did a lot of PVP in the end. Got pretty good at it. It was fun. I had to get 10 Souvenirs of Reprisal for my plat so that took a little doing. I tried each convenent a little bit.

so you got both endings or whatever? i still need to beat him again. kinda set it down after i played nonstop for a week or two
anyways, with the bow it's sort of risky but i dunno i'm really diggin my archer. composite bow has a pretty quick fire time. i go red tearstone ring and get down to almost dead health so it activates and i do whatever, 2x damage, then he's easy. just dodge a lot. it's not as hard as you might think. just do lots of backstep or rolling away from him. dont try to go thru or around, his stabs have pretty good tracking. it's easier to back off and hit while he stabs
this guy does it pretty good but doesn't use red tearstone or poison arrows. still does fast tho

Yea I did both endings. Could never get the timing of Parry. I felt like training and trying to get better but I never really needed to I guess. I suppose Gwyn only does combos if you're close so if you keep him at a medium distance he's pretty easy.
For the red tearstone ring, that was a really common strat with mages in Demon's souls. There were two items that stacked that had the same effect. People would just play the game at 20% health and kill most bosses in a hit or two.

I still haven't gotten all the Achievement points or Trophies on either platform. Getting all the rare weapons in the game seemed like it would be too hard.

None of them are super hard really. The annoying ones are the souls from the bosses. Three items need to be made from Sif's soul so he needs to be killed three times. Since you need two from Gwyn that means you need to finish it twice (and get to Anor Lando to have the giant make the last item).
I heard rumblings that the trident from those casters in Dukes Archive can be rare but I got it on my first while I was in The Depths (who knew). Aside from that none of that rare. You need to get all the tail items (Prescilla, Drake, Gaping, Scaless, Ancient, Gargoyle) which if you weren't trying for (since many are terrible) will mean you may need to go back into another new game plus.

Just picked up the expansion for PSN (on sale last I checked for half off). I guess that means I'm going to be back into it. Best game ever. I don't think there's been a game that has captured my attention for as long.

Expansion is pretty cool for those who haven't played it. A lot of new weapons and stuff. Having fun with PVP now that I know that game better. I can't beat the pros, but I do alright.

Think the 360 version is the one I have the most playtime in on. The PC version is nice because you can run in higher rez, better framerate, etc. PS3 version has a bigger community, I think. It's a toss up.
I didn't play the PC version much but saw some shady shit, yeah. Same on all 3 version though. People find ways to be dicks.

i still think the biggest "oh shit" moment i have in that game is when i invade someone and there's like 25 prism stones laying around where they killed other invaders. always know i'm in for a shit show at that point

Amazon had this on sale, so picked it up for 15 bucks and played it most of the day yesterday. If anyone is interested, it's here:
I did manage to kill the First Demon, Black Knight, Minotaur Guy, and made it past the Dragon that insta gibbed me about half a dozen times. It was mildly amusing, but in my opinion outside of the 'hard' factor it is a pretty meh game for me personally. There is really no RPG and it harkens back to the sado masochistic super hard games of my youth. The UI is sluggish which accounted for a good chunk of my deaths and The gotcha factor was pretty high.
I think I would've loved this game 20 years ago, and it does harken to my EQ love/hate relationship, but now it didn't do too much for me. Zero story, JRPG graphics, mediocre repetative twitch based gameplay, and a lot of being gibbed by being surprised. It definitely is a heck of a lot tougher than other RPGs, but generally I play for enjoyment not to do something over and over in a mindless droning fashion.
I'm glad I only paid 15 bucks for it. I'll toy around every now and then but the gameplay just isn't that appealing to me, unless I'm missing something. I'm story/RPG centric, and not even that big a gamer anymore.

Yeah i just don't agree with anything you said, sorry.
1. The story and lore are miles beyond any other game i can think of. But you're still basically nowhere if you've only got to the undead parish. Let me know when you get further than 2% into the game
2. It's not an RPG. It's a platformer/adventure game. It's all about the combat and pvp
3. Gameplay and enemy diversity and the tactical situations that arise from this diversity keep the gameplay anything but repetitive and twitch-based, but you wouldn't know that because you haven't even done half of the first objective yet. You're still basically at the beginning of the game
4. lol JRPG graphics? They're darker and much more mature than gay ass skyrim or some little kid's game like kingdoms of amalur
Sounds like it's too hard for you or you're used to having your hand held, like most gamers these days. And based on some of the things you said, i'm not sure you actually played the game at all. Or at least, you didn't play it very well if you actually died over and over trying to run past the drake (it's not a dragon, a rather excellent aspect of the lore that you claim is non existent) when you're supposed to run underneath the bridge below it

I'm not so much into platform twitch games anymore. Also, in clearing through the first 4 or so zones there isn't any real story. You are a undead dude. There are a few merchant NPC guys I've spotted, that's been it. I am playing through this without 'researching' it and there isn't any story or lore presented outside of the opening cutscene.
As far as difficulty, the mechanics are not tough, you just approach cautiously and figure areas and guys out. The only hard thing is the response is very sluggish and you have to wait for an animation before you can do anything which I find piss poor. Likewise, the directions are on four axis instead of 360 which bothers me. A hiccup can kill me and I have to clear an area again which is bothersome, and maybe hard to some but I find it just tedious. I don't find 'tedious' to be hard.
I'm not sure how you can compare the graphics to Skyrim. With the high texture stuff, Skyrim is drop dead gorgeous, especially on a PC.
Not sure why you are getting so defensive regarding my opinion there. I feel the game is mediocre. You like it more. It's all good, man. You obviously hate Skyrim which I think is a stellar game.

Skyrim's great but it's too easy. You literally can't fail anything, even if you try. NPC dialogue is completely uninteresting and mot dynamic like morrowind was. There are like 10 different types of enemies in the whole game. not very many armor or weapon options either. It holds your hand the whole way and is essentially an endless string of "find the floating arrow". Skyrim is like going on a nice, leisurely hike
Dark Souls lore is more in depth. It isn't spoon fed to you like skyrim. it's simply in the details. like weapon descriptions, why certain monsters are in certain areas, etc. there are hundreds of youtube theorizers trying to break it all down. and the difference between that and the books-for-five-year-olds in skyrim is that it's actually fun to explore the dark souls world. Everyone you run across is there for a reason, and you can have vastly different playthroughs depending on who you talk to or who you kill or who you don't
And texture resolutions =\= ambience, general feel, or sound effects. Dark souls is much more mature and pulls off the dark fantasy feel much better than skyrim, which is somewhat generic imo. They still can't make water borders look natural after 10 years
In the end it's not worth comparing, because they're not the same type of game at all. Skyrim is made to appeal to younger gamers and dark souls is aimed at people that actually want a challenge and a sense of consequence when they fuck up
I'm defensive because you're writing off a great game before you've even really played it

And what do you mean movement is only on four axis and sluggish? Are you playing on a keyboard? This game is designed for a controller. You absolutely have to have joysticks. And you should use the combat lock-on if you aren't. Now i just feel sorry for you. Operator error, hahahahaha
You should really watch a tutorial or something so you can get a better handle on it before you say it's the game's fault. This isn't an rpg, nor is it skyrim. This is like hardcore zelda more or less. Shadow of the colossus w/ enemies, whatever, but an RPG it most certainly is not
And how is this combat tedious in any way compared to skyrim's two moves per weapon and pressing the right trigger repeatedly for the entire game? (Not to mention horribly animated kill cam moves). You really just don't know what you're talking about here. I've put 100+ hours into both games and dark souls is like a work of art compared to the endless amount of fetch quests skyrim has to offer. Like i said, finish ringing the two bells, get to anor lando at least, then i'll actually listen.
If real critics wrote whiny reviews after they played a game for 3% of its content, would anyone care? Didn't you guys rip me a new one half a decade ago when i talked shit about FFVI without actually ever beating it? Hahahahah
You need to get better at and further in DS. I really don't think you'll regret it. Im pretty sure i got to about where you are and set it down for months because i thought it wasn't going to go anywhere. Holy shit was i wrong
