CoH Character Build Advice Thread

Posted this on M.Biz. as well, but thought I could maybe kill two birds with one stone... Perhaps we could even use the thread for asking/giving build advice, relating your own build experiences, etc.
So, I finally decided to get back on the horse and level some more after burning myself out on making, and re-making new toons (that character creator is the devil~).
Finally got my rifle/ device blaster to 12, but I'm sort of unsure which power to pick.
So far I have: burst, slug, buckshot, beanbag, web grenade, caltrops, and combat jump.
Available choices are: M30 grenade (which really doesn't sound terribly useful. minor damage, slow recharge...any good?), Sniper shot (sounds like a nice ability for making opening attacks), Taser (melee range stun...not sure how useful it actually is...), Targeting Drone (sounds like a pretty good ability, maybe use it in liue(sp) of acc. enhancers, and swap those out for more damage or something), Smoke Grenade (sounds like a nifty toy, but not sure how often I'd really use it), or dipping into a new pool by taking Hasten (still worthwhile after the "nerf"?) or Hurdle (planning on taking Health and Stamina eventually).
Basically, I'm most torn between Sniper and Drone at this point, but open to advice on hasten and hurdle (like, how soon should I be thinking about taking health/sta.).
Thanks in advance.
Away I go!

Sniper shot is one of the best soloing tools. Defenders get it much earlier than most of the blasters for some reason and I LOVE it. My defender can take a even con lt to 1/4 hp with an opening shot and one shot yellow minions.
M30 grenade you are misreading, it does 2 types of damage, MINOR Smashing AND Moderate Lethal, and has a strong knockback/down. Very useful and works really well with AE groups. or just any group with an AE taunter.
Targetting drone is apparently worthwhile, but I have no exp with it. If its a toggle on Aim its nice.
Hasten is mainly useful to soloers now and you save it up for the bosses, rather than keeping it on all the time.
For the pools, if you go fitness don't take hurdle, you already have combat jumping. Take Swift it speed up your run speed AND jump speed. Then get health sometime before 20 so you can get stamina at 20.
You can also consider taking hover jsut because with sniper shot it will allow you to solo bosses in large groups of mobs.
You have a tough choice though. Assault gets alot of the best powes early on while the other sets get them spread out better.
Personally, I would go with sniper shot if you solo more and M30 if you group alot, super leap at 14, Swift, health, and stamina to 20, then go back and get the cool powers.

Ah, ok. I knew M30 was an AE, and that it had a knockback component, but I was under the impression that it was just straight minor damage. As such, it sounded ok, but it didn't leap out at me as a 'must have'. Maybe I'll pick it up someday.
As for hover, my guy's a techie/natural sort, and I didn't think hover/fly fit the concept of his build. I went leaping instead.
Combat jump will definitely get you up to rooftops and pretty big gaps faster than hovering though. It's just getting down that's the trick (I figured out that you can just sort of rapell down if you don't feel like taking major fall damage. little slower, but very safe and effective).
My little ice blaster (lvl 7, very first toon. havn't touched her since I started this guy. Ice blasters are real late bloomers, it seems) has hover. Definitely useful for avoiding melee damage, but almost every mob has some form of ranged too so it's not a complete get-out-of-jail-free card. Something to think about though. Got to figure out if I'll have enough points left over to buy it too.
Thanks for the info.

I'm ice/ice -- I'm not the most effective damage blaster, but I'm real good at dealing with 1 or two enemies and taking no damage and little endurance. I shine while solo, and do alright grouped. I kind of wish I'd taken a larger variety in powers, but I like the way the char has turned out so far.

Thanks for helping me make up my mind about picking up Sniper Rifle.
Just finished off two missions that I had failed at last level (mind controlling and fire blasting bosses are bad, mmm kay). This time, between the extra level and the new attack, I completely smoked them both. Sniper makes a big difference.
I really do wish you could pick up more than 3 missions at a time though. Kind of stinks being so limited.
Yeah, having the added effect of slowing movement and attack rate on ice is quite nice, but it seems like they have to wait a lot longer to get some really beefy damage abilities than the other blasters.
Fire and electricity seem to be the most front loaded (fire especially).

Well fire is really weak for single target, Energy is very single target front loaded. Every attack does smashing and energy damage, and a good amount.

I am an electric / energy blaster and im loving it.
Slow recovery time + endurance drain while dealing good damage is the win. plus the combo of Aim and Build up is devastating when used with Zapp (sniper shot). Its really easy to eliminate a single target threat with it.

Im an empathy / Mind defender. Meaning I heal and have both DD's and AE DD's that slow attack, root and mez. I'm usually teamed up as main healer but I still do a good amount of damage and also act as mezzer if there is no controller in the group.
