Astros 1st Series team in 50 years without a negro

HOUSTON (AP) -- Joe Morgan worries about the face of baseball. Watching the World Series, the Hall of Famer is troubled by what he sees.
His old team, the Houston Astros, is down 3-0 to the Chicago White Sox, but it's not their lineup that concerns Morgan. It's their makeup.
The Astros are the first World Series team in more than a half-century with a roster that doesn't include a single black player.
``Of course I noticed it. How could you not?'' Morgan said while the Astros took batting practice before the opener in Chicago. ``But they're not the only ones. There are two or three teams that didn't have any African-American players this year.''
Morgan said it's a predicament and a challenge for Major League Baseball. While more players from around the world are making it to the majors -- Japan, Korea, for example -- the number of blacks is declining.
``It's a daunting task to get African-American kids into baseball, and I don't see the trend changing,'' he said.
The last World Series team without a black player was the 1953 New York Yankees. It wasn't until 1955 -- eight years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947 -- that Elston Howard became the first black in Yankee pinstripes.
Black players accounted for just about 9 percent of big league rosters this season.
``We know that we have to work to do,'' Commissioner Bud Selig said Tuesday. ``We'll continue to intensify our efforts. I'm very aware, I'm extremely sensitive about it, and I feel badly about it. But we need to get to work to change things.''

Maybe I don't get it, but I think he's lamenting the fact less and less blacks are playing baseball? Given the rich history of African Americans and our National Pasttime, I can certainly understand his point.
The good news is we're finally at a point in sports where they play the best player available, regardless of color. That should be the ultimate goal, but in my mind that has nothing to do with the point here. The point is they are losing the marketing war to the NBA, I think.

Yeah he's lamenting how we need to implement affirmative action into baseball so even slack ass lousy black players get to play ahead of better players and I'm lamenting what an annoying tub of shit he is.

I have to admit I didnt' notice. Partly because I don't give a shit about baseball, but mostly because I honestly don't give a shit if a player(of any sport) is black/white/asian/whatever, just whether or not they're entertaining to watch

Without googling last time I saw it was something like 10black/10hispanic/6asian/the rest white and others that don't make up a large percentage.

The U.S. Census has approximately 36 million people who identify themselves 'African American'. That doesn't mean they are black, but just identify themselves as such.
There are around 300 million people who live in the U.S. 10% is a good guess, but it's probably closer to 8 or 9%.

Speaking of which, what the fuck was growing on that dudes face that gave up the winning runs to Chicago. That was like super mole, or something, and it was glistening! Dude, I was mesmerised. He was black - or close enough.

Technically, they are African-Americans since their ancestors came from Africa also.
Here's a question for you guys. Who is the best African-American US born player right now... thats is not connected to Balco or steroids?
