White Supremacists Rally In Plant City
By MIKE WELLS
PLANT - CITY -- The tooting horn of "Dixie" coming from a passing car
elicited cheers Saturday from members of a white supremacist group
rallying in downtown Plant City.
With signs urging "stop the invasion" and "close the border" between
the United States and Mexico, about 15 members of the Tampa unit of National Vanguard stood along Collins Street, waving and smiling at
passers-by.
Unit coordinator Todd Weingart said the group protested in Plant City
because it is a "classic southern city that is being overrun by
Mexicans."
"A lot of people are upset by it, and we're out here to support
them," he said.
Weingart declined to say how many people belong to the Tampa unit of
National Vanguard but said about five of the protesters were Plant
City residents.
"The biggest misconception about us is that we're a hateful group,"
he said. "We're a positive pro-white organization, and that's the message we want to get out."
The point of the rally was lost on some, however. Todd Robbins is
from St. Petersburg, and Saturday was his first visit to Plant City. He sat on a bench outside an antique store with a friend a few dozen yards from
the rally.
"If it were Native Americans down there protesting immigration, maybe
I'd understand," he said. "But somebody should ask [the protesters] who
let their ancestors in."
Plant City police visited nearby stores before the rally to alert
shop owners. Police received no complaints. The rally lasted from 11:30
a.m. to 2 p.m., a dispatcher said.
"The biggest misconception about us is that we're a hateful group.
We're a positive pro-white organization."
